PAGE FOUR THE CLARION October 7, 1949 Brevard And West Georgia Play To Tie During the first game of the gridiron season for B. C., the Tor nadoes held the West Georgia eleven to a scoreless tie in a game played in Griffin, Georgia, on Sep tember 24. Our team left on the morning of the 23rd, and stayed their first night off-campus in Carlton, Georgia. The game was played the next night in the new Memorial Stadium, which was ded icated on that night. The game proved to be a thrill er, even though no score was made. It was said that the Geor gia gridiron was the best that the Tornadoes expect to invade this season. Although the Brevard eleven were outweighed and out classed in the game, the statistics give the ball game to the Torna does as follows: Seven first dpwns to Georgia’s five, and ad vancing to Georgia’s five-yard line while they held W. G. to their own 25-yard line. It was a defensive game for both teams. Players who received recogni tion in the Tornado eleven were Jamerson, Wilkinson and Pitts. The Tornadoes can lay claim to being one of the “tying-est” football teams in the nation after they tied the P. J. C. team last Saturday night. In their opening game of the season they played a scoreless tie with West Georgia college at Griffin, Georgia. • • • THREE CHEERS FOR JAMERSON . . . One bright spot in both games so far this season has been the (terrific line play of Bruce Jam erson, the diminutive Tornado left guard. After the West Georgia game week before last, the W. G. coach said that Bruce had played one of the best individual guard games he had ever seen. After having seen Jamerson in our first home game, we all agree that dynamite comes in small packages. • • A LITTLE EARLY, MAYBE This is a little early to be nam ing the All-American team, but we have one that we would like you to see. At the ends we have Wettlaufer of Penn and Mikutowicz; of Holy Cross. Tackles are Stankevich, Colgate, and Cifelli, Notre Dame. Our choices for guards are Barkouskie of Pitt and Zawadsky of Princeton. Itlaladowitz of Army will be our center, and in the backfield we have picked Pastuszak of Brown, Szulborski of Purdue, Petruska of Wisconsin and Dalitka of Temple. Sorry we couldn’t include Jones and O’Brien of Heidelberg, but maybe> they will make it next year. • • • TORNADO WHIRLWINDS . . . HERSHEY HIPPS, tailback' on last year’s'Tornado eleven, is playing for W. C. T. C. this year. He scored a touchdown against Tusculum last Saturday. FRANK McGILL, from Kingstree, S. C., who played guard in the big Blue line last year was up for a visit a few weeks ago. Frank had found himself a new quarterback during the sun\mer. She is the former Peggy Thomp son, also of Kingstree. • • • ODDS AND ENDS IN BASEBALL, . . . The pennant races were thick and hot during the final few days of the baseball season. The Yankees deserved to win it, and they did. Riddled with injuries all season, they came through to take the American League flag on the last day of the season. We will go out on a limb and pick the Yanks to defeat the Dodgers in the World Series in six games, but we don’t have a lock on the parley (like! Jack McCauley had last week end!) Kick- off is at 8 o’clock oh the lighted high school field. A large number of students plan to attend the game and char tered buses will be available for transportation. The band and cheerleaders will also make the trip to Hendersonville. In the 1949 season opener, the Tornadoes traveled to Griffin, Ga., and played the West Georgia Col lege eleven to a 0-0 score. Last Saturday night on the local high school field, Brevard was tied 6-6 by Presbyterian Junior Col lege. Appalachian “B,” always a hard club to beat because of the tricky “T” formation, will bring a squad of 30 players to Hendersonville for the game Saturday night. John Kirk is coach of the gridders from Boone. Xhe Tornadoes hope to avenge a tie game with Appalachian lost year, which ended 14-all. Head Coach Bob Andrews stated yester day that the Tornadoes are spend ing a great deal of time this week on fimdamentals, blocking and tackling. “In all probability, there will be some new faces in the Tornado starting line-up Saturday night,” the coach declared. In the second quarter last Sat urday night Brevard began roll ing. Taking over on the Presby terian 40 the Tornadoes drove by ground to the 20 from where Quarterback Ebby Wilkinson fad ed back and tossed a pass into the flat to End Jack McCauley who scored standing up. The kick for extra point was wide. Presbyterian came back in the third with its touchdown on « pass from Tailback Boan to End Mclntire. The play covered 30 yards. The kick for point was wide and the game ended with no fur ther threats from cither team. Bruce Jamerson, Bob Earnhardt and Clyde Pitts were outstanding for the Brevard machine. Jones and Pressley did the heavy work for Presbyterian. ^— Co-Ed THEATRE Sunday and Monday October 9 and 10 TASK FORCE Tuesday and Wednes day, October 11 and 12 BLUE LAGOON Thursday and Friday October 13 and 14 SCENE OF THE CRIME
