May Day Queen And Her Attendants At Brevard College
MISS JOYCE WILHELM, center in top row, will be crowned queen of the May at the annual May
Day program at Brevard college on Saturday afternoon on the beautiful campus lawn at 2 o’clock. Dwight
Foster, of Statesville, is the king. Maid of honor for the colorful event is MISS MILDRED CASE, of
Mayodan, and she is pictured in the center of the bottom row. The royal attendants are: MISS LIZETTE
LEWIS, of Crouse, right top, and MISS MAXINE RENSHAW, of Franklin, right bottom, both of the
sophomore class; MISS ANNE LEWIS, of King, left top, and MISS JENNIE LEiE JACKSON, of Can
dler, both of the freshman class. Many townspeople and out-of-town guests are expected here for the
May Day activities, which are being planned by Misi Add Lea Morgan, women’s physical education head.

To Assume New Duties

Dr. Eugene Coltrafie, who has
served as president of Brevard
college since it was founded in
1934, has been appointed to the
faculty of High Point college, it
was announced last week. He will
assume his duties there June 1.
The retirement of Dr. Coltrane
as president of Brevard college
was announced in early March,
and it =was understood then that
he would continue in the field of
Christian education in an institu
tion which is operated under the
auspices of the Methodist church.
Dr. Coltrane will be succeeded
here by Rev. George Brinkmann

Sigma Pi Alpha
Will Induct New
Members Friday
The new members of Sigma
Pi Alpha, the honor society for
foreign language students, will be
inducted at a formal initiation
and banquet on next Friday night,
May 12th, at Busy Bee Cafe. The
formal initiation will begin at 6:30
o’clock in the parlor of West hall.
The old members of the fraterni
ty will conduct the initiation.
The program of Sigma Pi Alpha
will be explained by Miss Dulcie
Hayes, faculty adviser for the
club. President Frances Swarin-
gen will be in charge of the en
tire formal initiation, and Margar
et George, Evelyn Eller, and Her-
shel Ayers will have a part in in
itiating the new members.

Moriarty And Welch Are
In Race For Student
Body President
In the campus elections on
Tuesday, A. J. Moriarty and Ber-
nie Welch made the necessity for
run-off elections to be held for
president of the student body. Mo
riarty, of Alexandria, Virginia,
received 82 votes; Welch, of Win
ston-Salem, polled 133, and Thom
as Roberts, of Grassy Creek, re
ceived 81, only one vote behind a
tie with Moriarty.
Clarence Blythe, of Henderson
ville, had no opponent and was
elected vice-president of the stu
dent government.
Two girls were in the race for
secretary-treasurer of the student
council, Mary Alice HoUifield, of
Brevard, polled a majority vote
over Martha Bishop, Tryon. The

Festivities To Take
Place Tomorrow
On College Campus
Tomorrow afternoon the tradi
tional May Day festivities will
take place on the Brevard campus.
The program is scheduled to be
gin at 2 o’clock on the lawn in
front of Taylor Hall. Little has
been disclosed of the nature of
the program, but there will be
three dances taken from the olden
countries. Miss Add Lea Morgan
who is director of the entire pro
gram, revfealed that the theme will
be “Enchanting Evening” and that
the background music for all the
dances will be taken from the
works of the famed Russian com
poser, Tschaikovsky. His “Nut
cracker Suite” will be used as the
main musical theme.
The May court, chosen recently,
in a student body election, is as
follows: Queen, Joyce Wilhelm, of
Statesville, escorted by Dwight
Foster, also of Statesville; maid of
honor, Mildred Case, Mayodan, es
corted by Donald Helms, Char
lotte; sophomore attendants, Liz-
ette Lewis, Crouse, and Maxine
Renshaw, Franklin, escorted by
Harold Tolbert, Lenoir, and Clyde
Pitts, Franklin, respectively;
freshman attendants, Anne Lewis,
King, and Jefinie' Lee Jackson,
Candler, escorted by Kenny Davis,
Gastonia, and Sherman Canter,
Greensboro, respectively. Royal
pages for the court are “Chip” An
drews and “Joby” Stevenson.
In the Arab dance, the follow
ing girls will take part: Martha,
Harding, Mary Cobb, Pat Boone,
Snooky Ellington, Jane Truax,
Emma Hartsell, Billie . Lowery,
Toopie Baxter, Beth Ross, and
Betty Shepherd.
The Russian scene will be
danced by Norma King, Dot Dell
inger, Minnie Lee Hicks, Marty
Gibbs, Jean Arledge, Bettie Huff,
Dot Call, Jean Parrish, Millie Da
vidson, and Ann Smith.

Frefh-Soph Picnic
Is Slated May 13
At Cascade Lake
Throw away your books, cares,
and even teachers for a whole aft
ernoon, folks, for we’re going on
a picnic. Yes, the day of the long-
waited freshman-sophomore out
ing is almost here, and aren’t we
going to have a gay time with
loads of fun?
The big event comes off Satur
day, May 13, at 12:30 o’clock when
all the students will leave the cam
pus in chartered buses for a gala
afternoon of swimming, boat rid
ing, playing various sports, and
just lolling around in the warm
mountain sunshine at Cascade
Lake. Miss Add Lea Morgan, di
rector of athletics for women,
will direct the recreational activ
ities of the afternoon. There will
also be at least six life guards on
duty to keep an eye on all the
water babies. After the after
noon has been spent in jolly fel
lowship and recreation, the food
will be served in good old-fash
ioned picnic style.
