NOVEMBER 22, 1950 CLARION PAGE SEVEN Volleyball Team Finish Work For Season; Clubs Plan Intramurals BY MARY GRACE NANCE The 1950 intramural program for girls got off to a flying start Tuesday, November 7, in the col lege gym. Volleyball teams rep resenting four groups of students were practicing the finger elements of the game, reviewing the rules, and electing a team captain when the whistle blew for the first game of the season. Teams rep resented were the Euterpean sophomores, Euterpean freshmen, Mnemosynean sophomores, and Mnemosynean freshmen. Nancy Medford was elected to lead the Euterpean freshmen; Marty Gibbs was captain for the older sisters, the Euterpean sopho mores; Pat Brown ably captained her Mnemosynean sophomores; and Kathie Lassiter was elected by Mnemosynean freshmen to direct that team. Two games were played each night for three nights, thereby al lowing each team to play the other two teams one time. At the con clusion of the final game held on Friday, November 10, the standings of the teams were: Won Lost Mnemosynean fresh. 3 0 Euterpean Sopho. 2 1 Euterpean Fresh. 1 2 Mnemosynean Sopho. 0 3 The Mnemosynean society fresh men, will be credited with ten points for taking first place. The second place Euterpean sophomores will receive five points and the third place Euterpean freshmen will receive three points. At the conclusion of the intra mural program the team having the highest number of points will receive a trophy. With an exceptionally large number of talented teachers and students, the college programs are expected to be some of the best heard over the local radio station. President George B. Ehlhardt yesterday urged all friends of Brevard college to make a special effort to hear The College Hour. to their class by winning this first tournament. Chairman for the volleyball is Ann Deas; for basketball, Helen Co ble; for table tennis. Daphne Bow ers; for badminton, Marty Gibbs; for softball, Nancy Medford; for tennis, Bettie Huff; for golf, Jane Wilson; for archery, Martha, Bish op and for outing, Martha Frances Washam. The various chairmen, Miss Moseley explained, are responsible for organizing the practice sessions and the tournament games of the sport to which they have been as signed. The above roster of ap pointments was completed at a meeting of association officers held at the college on November 9. For students new to the college this year Miss Moseley explains that the Woman’s Athletic associa tion is constituted of the complete feminine enrollment of the school. Officers are elected at a meeting of the complete association; these appoint the various chairmen. B. Team With six lettermen returning, the Brevard College quintet is looking forward to a thumbs-up sea son. In the opinion of Coach Bob Andrews, the squad has an excel lent chance of bettering its last year’s conference record, seven wins and six losses. A partial schedule of 14 games already has been mapped out. Con testants will include Gardner Webb, Mars Hill, Spartanburg Junior col lege, Asheville-Biltmore, Lees Mc Rae, Youngharris Junior college and Blanton’s Business college. Practice will begin on Monday, November 27, and the team will play North Greenville on Decem ber 12. Coach Andrews has requested that all boys who are interested in playing basketball and who will enroll for the spring semester, re port for the first practice. '•We recognize that in a junior college of Brevards’ size varsity sports teams must be made up of freshmen and half of sophomores.
