OCTOBER 8, 1954 CLARION PAGE THREE Platter Chatter By jm GLAZENES It’s fall again and time to say hello to the new students who have come into the fold. Welcome guys and dolls! Hope you find the place to your liking. There’s a lot of work ahead of you, but along with the work you will find time to relax and enjoy some entertainment. One of the best ways I know to let some ten sion go is through listening to mu sic. Sit back easy and spin a few ‘■cool” platters on the old record player or catch some “groovie” dee- jay slipping out his favorite discs. Now for the “cats” who buy rec ords, I’ll give a little “info”—slip uptown to Mr. Taylor’s jewelry store — McFee Jewelers — and pick up your favorites there. You radio hounds can catch a number of good dee-jay shows. Brevard’s own radio station WPNF has several studio originated rec ord shows during week days. One special program I recommend is the 1240 Club coming to you from 6:30 to 7:00 in the evening. Other stations you should be able to pick up on your radio are WWIT, Can ton; WESC, Greenville, S. C.; WORD, Spartanburg; WMIT, Mt. MitcheU, WWNC, WISE, WSKY, and WLOS, all of Asheville. Changing the subject back to rec ords, here’s the current national Top Ten Tunes as rated by “Bill board,” the national newspaper on show business and “Downbeat,” magazine for musicians. 1. “Hey There” (best recordings) —R. Clooney, Sol.-S. Davis, Jr., Dec. 2. “Skoniaan”—^R. Marteria, Mer cury-Four Lads; Col. - Bulawayo Sweet Rhythm Boys, Londaon-R. Anthony, Cap. L. Holmes, MGM. 6. “If I Give My Heart to You” —D. Loi, Mapor—Doris Day, Col. 7. “I Need You Now”—E. Fisher, V. 8. “Little Shoemaker”—^Gaylords, Mercury—H. This Week’s Best Buys ' 1. “Muskrat Ramble,” McGuire Sisters, Coral. 2. “Whither Thou Goest” — Les Paul-Mary Ford, Cap. Any of these records that you would like to hear on the radio wUl be played if you call the local radio station and ask the announcer to play your selections on one of his request shows. 0. K., good people, tha,t about does it until next time, so I’ll have you to think about this one . . . The epitaph on a jazz musician’s tombstone read, “Don’t dig me now boys. I’m really gone!” (Cool man, real cool!) rttWAWtwW GOO m : Pictured above are the newly elected freshmen officers. Here’s wishing them all possible success as they lead their class in the com ing year. Jest Talkin’ Q.. What is this we hear about Dot P’isher running after cows up at John’s Rock? Boy! I bet that wasn’t a cow—but a MAN! We heard by a very mysterious source that Mary Newell has an ardent admirer. Don’t tell Mary— hear! Joe Haas seems to be very cheery these days — it could possibly be a day student—cute and cunning! Mr. Roy, we heard that you had a real soft bed on the retreat. Is that right. The lily pool couples were well chaperoned Saturday night by the private eye four on third floor. Did the boys appreciate it? It seems like Dale Pierce is hav ing a hard time trying to decide between the two girls in room 317. We hear that Billie Cansler has been having a dieing time up at the funeral home. “Congratulations!” Gus — we are real proud of you. Why we didn’t even know you could play marbles but instead you were elected cap tain of Brevard’s marble team. How about that? Dot Wilkinson seems to go for the Clemson Tigers instead of the Brevard Tornadoes. It has been rumored that Frankie Nesbitt has been having a swell time at choir practice. Gee, don’t Carlene Sorrells and Larry Davis make a cute couple? Fredrice Trull seems to be pret ty popular. I wonder who her crush/is now? What is this we hear about Pat Greene’s getting a “dime one” through the mail. What happened to Joe Curley over the week end? He seemed to be having a pretty unusual time Monday night—^with the girls. Well, that’s it for this time folks, so everyone be good—^have a good Glenn To Steer New Freshman Class To Higher Heights In ’54 In a meeting of the freshman class Monday, September 27, in the college auditorium, with Henry Justice, student council president presiding, the following officers were elected: Preisident; Bill Glenn; vice president, Gus Deal; secretary and treasurer, Jane Cathey; and student council representative, Car roll Atkinson. He won the Loma Catherine Jackson scholarship at the college this year. Gus is from Charlotte, where he graduated from Myers Park high school. There he was president of the Bible club and a member of the track team. Jane is also from Charlotte and a graduate of West Mecklenburg high school. She was salutatorian of her class and an active member of the Beta club. Future Teachers club, FHA, Bible club and worked on the newspaper and annual staff. This summer he attended Camp OaroUna in Brevard, where he received the Water Safety Instructor certificate offered by the American Red Cross. With such ambitions and out standing officers, this freshman class should be one of the best that Brevard college has known. time—and we’ll see you again next time. ' y Christian Workers* Mountain Top Retreat Inspiring Success “Mountain top experience” is cer tainly the best description of our Christian Workers’ Club Retreat held on October 2-3. From alpha to omega, this is one experience that wiU remain in. the memories of all the retreaters for many moons. After having landed in the mid dle of Pisgah Forest, a vigorous crew of Christian young people de cided to take a lil’ walk — and they walked and walked and walk ed — clear up to the very top of John’s Rock! Led by Reg Smith and Bob Boggan, the hike was one grand success—snakes or no snakes —and after the long descent, the hot dogs and cokes which were waiting for us tasted like sirloin steak and Nero’s pearl drink. The business meeting that night was a “real wild” affair. We found ourselves voting on an amendment to the amendment to the amended motion that our club adopt en graved pins . . . while we hadn’t yet voted to have pins! Our devotions, held around the campfire, were followed by group singing and games. We’re stiU won dering why Joe Wilson, Gus Deal and Jo Gourley were crouched around a small circle outside the campfire, shooting acorns at each other. Could it be that they were playing marbles? Since we were all very haggled hikers, we really felt like getting a heap big amount of shut eye on our bunk beds. But due to certaii and sundry items, such as Dot Fisher, Dot Fisher, and Dot Fishi er, we were not able to close our lids right away. Incidentally, w& have elected Dot as “Star Cow Hunter of the Year,” in hopes tiiat she will restrain her searching ta better times than 2:00 in the morn ing. Our last day consisted of morn ing devotions, an inspiring talk by Mr. Roy, and another hike, this time on a “straight and narrow”' path. Although some stayed behind on this event, they were duly en tertained by Wilbur “Armstrong”^ Thompson and his tearful trumpet. At the end of a very complete and inspiring day, we all turned toward home with a peace in our hearts and a joy in our minds that can come only as the result of a mountain top experience” such as was had by all those who attended our C. W. C. Retreat. Brevard Glee Cluh Sings For Conference The Brevard college Glee club' under the direction of Mr. F .B. Price, participated in the Youth Night program of the Western North Carolina Methodist confer ence in Asheville Saturday night, September 25. The group sang, “Be Not Afraid,” before approximately 3,500 young people and adults. This being their first appearance of the season, the club and Mr. Price, were quite pleased with the results, and are eagerly looking forward to anoth er opportunity to show their tal^ ents.
