The Clarion Sophomores, Congratulations I Volume XXrv BREVARD COLLEGE, SATURDAY, MAY 25, 1957 Number IS McLARTY IS NAMED PRESIDENT OF COLLEGE Residence Halls Are Named By Trustees The new residence halls on cam pus that formerly had no name, ex cept that of New Dorm and Wom en’s Residence Hall, were named by the Board oi Trustees at their annual meeting May 3rd. The Resi dence Hall for Women has been named in honor of Mrs. Edwin L. Jones and will foe known as Anna bel Jones Hall. The new dormitory for men was named Green Hall in memory of Mr. Gay Green, of Asheville, who j | left the college a large beiuest. Glee Club To Give Final Concert The Brevard college glee club will give its final concert of the season Saturday, June 1st, at 8:00 p. m., in the auditorium of the cam pus center. Under the direction of Professor Nelson Adams, the glee club has made tremendous prog ress and is expected to give a near - professional performance. More tJian one-eighth of the full time students participate in glee club work. As a part of the glee clulb, three smaller groups have given performances; they are the men’s quartet, women’s trio, and the mixed quartet. The glee club and choir will fur- rash the music for all commence ment exercises. The public is cordially invited to attend this concert. Health Is The Reason Six New Professors To increase Faculty 74 AT CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES Two teachers have resigned frcm 1he faculty of Brevard col lege. They are: Mrs. Guy Burchfiel and Mrs. Adale Pitts Lowrance, both in the business department. Five new members will join the ii'culty and staff next year; one other is expected to join. Mrs. Juan ita Lavender has been appointed librarian. Sirs. Elmer R. Dixon will join the business department; she comes from Peace College in Ral eigh. Mr. Clayton H. Hoff will join the English department, he comes from Bloomfield College, Bloom field, New Jersey. Colonel Rupert D. Graves will join the mathemat ics and science departments; he is now preparing for his master’s de gree at Purdue University. Mr. Mal- come Henderson will join the bus iness department; he comes from Catawba College. The board of trustees of Brevard College in their annual meeting on May 3rd elected Rev. EJmmett Ken^ nedy McLarty, Jr., of SaIisbuiY» as president of the institufioG succeed Rev. Rolbert H. Stam^, who resigned because of the con dition of his health. At the same time, the board cre ated a new position of vice-i>res»- dent and appointed Mr. Stampy to serve in this capacity. The changes, which will beoMoe effective July 1, had been retjuest- ed by Mr. Stamay not only because of the condition of his health, bat also because of the rapid growth and expansion Brevard College has enjoyed for the past several years. The new president is the young est son of Dr. E. K. McLarty and the late Mary Brown McLarty, of Asheville. He was born in Ashe ville in 1908 and finished school in High Point in 1926, Rev. Mr. McLarty received iris bachelor’s degree from Duke Um- versity in 1931 and his Bachekir Divinity degree in 1934. In addition to his academic work, he repre^ sented Duke on the freshman tea ms, varsity swimming and vsrsatir track teams. He was also a mem ber of the University Glee club and quartet and was first tenor soloisl; for the newly organized Univer sity choir. He served as president of the campus YiMCA, was a naertii- ber of Delta Sigma Phi, social flha- ternity and Omicron Delta Ka'ppa,. national honorary leadership fra ternity. In 1934, Mr. McLarty joined the Western North Carolina Methodist conference while serving as assis tant pastor of West Market Street Methodist church in Greensboro. During the ensuing years he held pastorates at Big Spring churefe. Charlotte; Love’s Church, Walker- town; Grace Church, Greensboro, where the church was dedicated during his ministry; First Metfe- odist church, Morganton, wfiere the new edifice was planned ai^d constructed under his leadership and the First Church, Sali:^siTy, which has just accepted a plan far: a long-range building program. In addition to these pastoi"ates. Rev. Mr. McLarty has served the WNC conference as secretary the Conference Board of Edttca- tion for 10 years. He has taught far many years in training schools and he has been on the faculty of Ap proved Pastors Supply SchooS, sS Duke for four summers. In 1954 he was one of the minis ters on the evangelistic mission $o Cuba and was invited to make the mission tour of the Caribbean. Rev. Mr. McLarty was married to- Miss Margaret Harrell, of Ashe ville, in 1935. They have three dau ghters, Margaret Whitmel (Peggy), 18, who will enter Duke next fall as a freshman; Sallie Gordon, 13. and Jean Ellen, 7.
