PAGE EIGHT THE CLARION May 25, 1957 H Men’s Assembly Elects Carper THE BIG SISTER Organization of Brevard College has issued bids to 20 outstanding, rising sopho more women for the year 1957-58. Women’s Assembly j Barbara Davis Gets Elects Pat Guyer Duke Scholarship The Woman’s assembly has cho sen as its new president, Miss Pat Guyer. While attending high school in Elkdn, North Carolina, Pat was ver>- active. She received the DAR good citizenship award, was the class poet, news editor of the school paper, treasurer of the Beta club, and secretary of the Spanish club. Pat was ver>’ active in her church where she was president of the MYF. This year Pat has served on the Woman’s House council, and has worked on the Pertelote as Fresh man editor. Pat isn’t sure of her major so .she is taking a liberal arts course. The recipient of a $2,000 schol arship at Duke University is Miss Barbara Davis, of Asheville. The scholarship is intended to encourage young men and young women who give promise of be- L’o-Ting leaders in their chosen fields of endeavor. Barbara cer tainly does meet these require ments. While at Brevard College Barbara has been president of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Phi Alpha, president of the Canteifaury club, a marshal, a big sister, a member of the Alpha Beta Gamma, and the secretary' of the International Re lations club. Congraitulations Barbara and good luck at Duke next year. Students Urged To Use Library Sum— ■I Film Division - Ecusta Paper Division Olin Mathieson Ghemical Corporation Pisgah Forest, North Carolina Makers of the World’s Finest Cigarette Paper, Olin Cellophane and Polyethylene 295 NEW BOOKS RECEIVED The Brevard College library staff has been working overtime to catalog and to put new books on the shelves for circulation. Alrea dy this year 295 new books, thirty- one of which were donated, have been received; most of these are now available to students. About fifty more are on order and the lib rary plans to order more soon. Most of these new books are for reference and study. Every de partment has ordered books, most of which are on the shelves. For instance, Mr. Harvin is trying to get at least one parallel book on each subdivision of history, and his efforts are being rewarded. Mr. Roy has added many new volumes for parallel reading in religion; Miss Nicholson and Mrs. Lobdell have added books for research and study in chemistry and biology; Mr. King and Mr. Egerton have been scouting for helpful math and physics supplements, many of which arc now available to stu dents. More than twenty-five new books on drama are now being cir culated. The business department has also ordered several new books. The language department has ordered phonograph records to supplement the foreign language courses. These records are expect ed to arrive with phonograph rec ords ordered by the music depart ment sometime in May. Greek Sculpture, Mr. Franklin, and American Electronics Hand book are three of the many books that will be on the shelves soon. The Letters of Thomas Wolf, Reb el and Red Coats, Presidency, and The F. B. I. Story are four inter esting books on the “new book” shelves. Paul Lewis and Charles Walsh were pe titioned for the offices of vice- president and secretary-treasurer respectively. John is from North Wilkesboro, where he was very active in §chool and church affairs. His senior class elected him president and also he was president of his MYF. Sports are John’s first love; he was a member of the basketball, football, and track teams in high school. At Brevard he has excell ed in track; he throws the javelin, shot put, and discus. When asked for a comment con cerning hjs new office, John said, "I am extremely honored that the memibers of the Men’s Assemibly even considered me for this office and I shall do my best to carry out their desires.” Creative Comer | I s I E HURRICANE The sky grew grey; the ocean still, A sad. sweet silence the earth did fill.
