OCTOBER 25, 1957 THE CLARION PAGE THREE A Bird’s Eye View By “Pat” Guyer Hello there! Nature’s music, na ture’s beauty — Nature’s peace. It seems to me a kind of Paradise has wandered down on our scenic cam pus. The maples and oaks, proudly displaying their bronze, gold, scar let, and blushing rays are indica tions of approaching winter. It al ways gives me a tinge of sadness to sit by a window and watch the leaves drift gently to the earth, and occasionally watch one spiral be cause it was caught in a whirlwind. All these works of nature make one gaze into the open. . . think of ul timate things . . . dream, dream, dream . . . and think more beauti ful thoughts. With such surroundings I decid ed this edition to give you a bird’s eye view of the religious organiza tions on campus. Nothing can take the place of religion no matter how busy one gets. Don’t feel bad if I forget to mention some major de tail — I’m gifted that way —_^and really, you see, it’s only a oTfa’s eye view. My roomie just told me that the Canterbury Club is planning a bar becue for Sunday, October 27. She breathed something about horses . . . water-falls . . . blue jeans . . . and that famous Harvin coffee. Tom Anderson, president of the group, is displaying much initia tive. Other officers are Bill Hall, vice-president; Janice Brown, sec retary; and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harvin, advisors. The Reverend Frank McKenzie, Rector of St. Phillip’s Episcopal church, leads the informal discussions on Mon day afternoons. Three cheers for the Episcopalians! Evelyn Cook, president of the Christian Fellowship, tells me that the year has been a most success ful one. “We have not had under seventyJive a single time,” she said with that often present twin kle of accomplishment in those big brown eyes. Everyone seemed to enjoy the recent talent show. I sat spell-bound as elegant Doti Leg- gfctt performed, and lovely Elaine Helms twirled fire. Of course, one could hardly forget the laughs Har old McMillian and Edith Houck drew. Honestly, some people can really surprise you. Evelyn also commented that Nancy Norton and j Rayford Ledford, the social chair- I men, would appreciate any further i ideas for fellowshiping. So if you i have any, please see one of them. I Mrs. Randolph, the advisor, works I hard to cultivate the need ol I Christian Fellowship in one’s life. Please accept our thanks, Mrs. Ran dolph. We all enjoy Christian Fel lowship immensely. Plans are now being made for the organization of a Westminister Fellowship. A meeting on Novem ber 11, is being called to elect of ficers and make plans for the year. The purpose of the Fellowship will be to keep its members in contact with the Presbyterian Church. Rev. Ben Ormand, and Professor Reid and McFadden will advise tT3» group. I think life for me would be pret ty miserable if I forgot to put in a plug for the Baptists — know what I mean? President, Ervin Dendy, reports that much enthusiasm is 'be ing shown this year. On November 1-3, the group will travel to Dur ham, North Carolina for the BSU Convention. No Friday and Satur day classes ... a view of thfe foot- ;hills of ole North Carolina . . . queistons . . . answers ... an en lightened outlook . . . Even the thought makes one want to attend. This active group is also having Mr. Harold Cole, state secretary, to speak on November 11. Ward’s News Stand Brevard, N. C. A SCENE FROM the Euterpean initiation is shown above. Pat Gray, Gail Condor, Elaine Helms, Loretta Helms, and Shirley Clark sang enthusiastically to prove they were loyal pledges. Freshmen Euterpeans Are Initiated On Friday, Octoiber 11, initiation into the Euterpean Literary So ciety for the Freshman pledges was held. The theme was “Puritan Day” and the pledges wore no ntake-up and straight hair. They were very courteous, bashful young ladies and refrained from convep ing with members of the opposite sex all day. They also referred to their sophomore superiors as Miss and enjoyed such tasks as carrying books and trays, cleaning room*, scrubbing showers, and polishing shoes. At 4:30 P. M. they were dressed in Bermuda shorts, shirts worn backwards, socks of different col ors and shoes that were not mates. They were marched via the rail road tracks up to Camp Straus where they served the sophomore Euterpeans and their Clio broth ers hot dogs, doughnuts, and pota to chips before they were allowed to eat. Following the meal, the girls e» tertained by singing solos, giving speeches, imitating Marilyn Mon roe, doing the Hula, and perform ing various other tasks imposed up on them.. They hiked back to the college around 7:30 p. m. — tired but haip- py. A good time had been had by all and never had such fine sports manship been shown. They are now full-fledged Euterpeans.
