SPORTS TALK with Tappy
Brevard Routes Hiawassee 73-59
The red hot Brevard Tornadoes
romped on to their fifth victory in
their last six games by downing
Hiawassee 73-59. The Tennessee
team trailed throughout the en
tire game and were unable to cope
with the reibounding aibility of U.
B. Deyton and Wayne Cordell. Not
even their sharp shooting accur
acy from' outside the foul circle
could keep them in the game.
Kent Laughter played his best
game since the opening of the sea
son, hitting for 17 points. Forward
Lloyd Hensley also hit for 17. The
team’s newest addition, Jim Huff
man, of Marion, N. C., liit the scor
ing column for the first time with
4 points. His superior faking and
foot work were a pleasure to see
Other scoring were as follows: Cor
dell, 11; Forbes, 6; Dayton, 6; Liv
ingston, 5; Van Horn, 4; and Wil
son, 3.
Brevard met defeat, their second
in their last seven games. The Tor
nadoes, who went into the game
with 8 wins, 7 losses, were unaible
to dump in the 4 points necessary
to pull the game out five, and the
game ended with Brevard behind
by the slim margin of 4 points.
Brevard, who defeated Mars Hill
in their first outing, held the lead
several times early in the second
half, but failed to keep pace as the
game came down to the finish.
Lloyd Hensley, averaiging better
than 20 points, upped his average
by dunking in 25 points. John Van
Horn sank 11; Don Livingston net
ted 9. and U. B. Deyton hit for 8
markers.

Tornadoes Upset Young Harris
82-75
The Brevard Tornadoes pulled
off one of the league’s biggest up
sets here as they ripped through
the Young Harris’ defense and
topped the highly rated Georgia
squad 82-75. In knocking off Young
Harris, Brevard was defeating last
year’s Georgia State Champions.
Brevard showed one of the finest
team efforts we have seen, with
each of the starting players scor
ing in double figures. The two
teams played a see-saw battle
throughout the first half leaving
the score knotted at 39-39 as the
half ended.
Brevard’s attack was led by
Lloyd Hensley, who racked up 27
points. U. B. Deyton and Wayne
Cordell hit for 16 and 14 respec
tively, while guards Don Living-
son and Kent Laughter each hit for
10 markers.
Wayne (Potsy) Cordell was per
sonally responsible for 8 of the
teams first 13 points, and he had
12 points at the end of the first
quarter.
Mars Hill E“ges Brevard 69-65
The snow failed, but the Mars
Hill basketball five successfully
turned back the Brevard College
Tornadoes Saturday night at Mars
Hill. After journeying 50 miles,
half way in snow, ice and sleet,

United States unit of the Federa
tion, the United Student Christion
Council. As Mr. Maury explained
at a luncheon sponsored by the De
partment of Student Work of the
Board of Missions: “It is the intent
of this program to effect a real
change in the present student gen
eration in order to lead more stu
dents to volunteer as full-time
workers in the church’s world wide
missions.” The key event, which
will draw 350 students from the
Federation’s members units and
100 other students, will be a major
world teaching conference in Brit
ain in 1960. Following the interna
tional conference a series of reg
ional teaching-study conferences
will be held. The purpose of the
program is fourfold, Mr. Maury
said, to:
1. Re-think the responsibility of
the church in the present world
sitintion on the basis of the Bibli
cal revelation and the lessons of
church history.
2. Recover and communicate to
this student generation a new and
more adequate understanding of
the basic motivation for the mis
sion of the church and commitment
to it.
3. Train students and young
loaders in the mission of the church
today.
4. Help them to find their place
of service within the total life and
mission of the church.

“Who’s he? Must Ibe a new stu
dent. Kinda cute, isn’t he?” These
are lamiliar remarks being made
about the new faces appearing on
campus since the beginning of the
second semester. It seems as if the
boys are out of luck again since no
r.ew girls were added. Better luck
next time, fe'llows. I might add
that we’re glad to have all these
new students, and we hope you’ll
‘be happy here at Brevard. It’s a
friendly campus, and in no time at
all you’ll feel right at home and be
in the full swing of events. We’re
glad to see certain familiar faces
reinstated too.
For many of us the beginning of
this last semester is the beginning
of the last lap here at “ole” Bre
vard Tech. In too short a time we’ll
have only memories to look back
upon, because we’ll be elsewhere
in new places doing new things.
Many of the sophomores have been
seen racking their brains and
scanning college catalogs trying to
decide where they will continue
their educations. A few lucky ones
have made the great decision and
have already applied and have been
accepted at other schools. What
ever the choices may be, whether
it be school, work, or marriage, it
is important that we made the most
of that last laip so that when ve
look back into the memories of Bre
vard College they will be pleasant
ones. When our two years here are
completed, we want to be able to
say we did our best and benefited
by coming here.
Speaking of marriage, Thad Gar
rett told me that he took the bliss
ful step this weekend and now has
a lovely, blushing bride. Thad and
Barbara Courtney were married
on Sunday, February 2nd, at the
First Baptist Church of Sanford,
North Carolina. To you, Thad and
Barbara, from all of us come our
heartiest congratulations for a life
of happiness.
The Brevard Methodist Church
was the scene of another lovely
wedding on February 3rd when
Don Widenhouse and Patricia
Jenkins of Midland became Mr. and
Mrs. Our best wishes always to you
also, Don and Pat.
It’s nice to see Bertie Lou Hut
chins back at school after a week’s
absence due to an appendix oper
ation. A certain sophomore boy
looks extremely happy again.
Our basketball team really seems
to be getting on the ball here to
wards the end of the season. We’re
proud of you boys. An evidence of
that was shown in the disappoint^
faces when the convoy to Mars HUl
was cancelled Saturday night.
Nearly everyone in school had
planned to go support you boys.
Keep up the good work for we’re
behind you all the way.
There’s just a little over a week
left until the big Valentine Dance.
You boys had better get busy and
isk the girls for dates ’cause we
don’t want a stag line at the dance.
And don’t forget — no flowers this
time. Bet that sounds like a winner,
doesn’t it?
Let’s all ramble down to the stu
dent lounge and socialize awhile.
It’s good for the morale.
Hiista la vista!
