JANUARY 15, 1960 THE CLARION PAGE THREE BREVARD’S WHIRLWIND TORNA DOES are really out to win, as depicted in these three photos. Shown here are Alton Jones and Max Walser “racking them up” for Brevard Tech. The oppos ing team at the time the 'pictures were taken was the Davidson freshmen, who fell prey to the Brevard Blues after hav ing defeated them earlier in the confer ence year. Brevard Tornadoes Out To Win By PHIL TAPPY School spirit has reached the epi- tomy of enthusiasm for the past two weeks here on the campus at Bre vard College. On the nights of bas ketball games, the antique gym rocks with boisterious shouts from a victory-hungry student body. Led by Chris Olsen’s gaily bedecked chorus of cheerleaders and Wally Avett’s newly formed noisemakers, it is impossible to quell the roaring that is entirely new to Coach Chick Martin and "the basketball team who are basking in this new glory. In the center of the uprising and its chief motive are the conference respected “torrid” Tornadoes fresh from crushing upsets over highly touted, undefeated, conference- leading North Greenville and an over-confident Davidson squad which had found the Brevard five and easy touch earlier in the sea son. The Tornadoes led by Tom Austin's liiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiniiiiitiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiHiiti BEST OF THE BEST CREST Headquarters for School Supplies “You Name It, We’ve Got It.” Barbee, Glover Coggins, Charlie Hensley, Alton Jones, and John Eller, have been unmerciful and unrelentless in their treatment of visiting teams. Their home court at tacks have been unblemished be fore the students, who in a semi- riotious state of mind, screaim^ for Ihe lead to run the gambit of 20 to 30 points never conciding an inch until the final buzzer. Possibly our peak was reached Friday night when at least 300 stu dents turned out “en masse” for a bon fire pep rally in the road in front of the gym. The old victory bell sent its clanging echo into the night, the fire leaped gleamingly into the gray cast of the warm Jan uary sky, and the hopes of another victory voiced themselves from our hearts and lips as we poured out yells and screams of B-R-E-V-A-R-D. The numtoer one man behind our team. Coach Chick Martin, in a show cf appreciation and emotion, said he hoped the team would be as hot as the bon fire which was then licking out and stretching its waving fangs into the crisp night air. Win or lose, Brevard has found something it cannot afford to lose. VVe must not let our spirit die as did the smoldering ashes of our bon fire at the close of our victory cries. Spirit before victory, but vic tory always gleaming in our eyes. Brevard Racks ’Em Up Patronize Our Advertisers Pessimistic fans received a shock following the Christmas holi days when Brevard’s basketeers re turned to action with three re sounding wins over three powerful teams. On January 6, North Green ville, previously undefeated in junior college competition, fell at the feet of the spirited Tornado quintet, 95-70. Playing host to Davidson Frosh the next night, Brevard was still unmerciful in drubbing the tallest team they had faced all year 78-59. Asheville- Biltmore was never in the game on January 9 as the Tornadoes chased the Bulldogs off the court and into Ithe do^ouse, routing the poor pups 83-66. The second week of play was not so kind, however. The first time The Tornadoes left hc-me, their shooting accuracy stayed behind them and they dropped a heart- breaker to Lees^McRae, 46-45. Barbee and Hensley again led the winning Tornadoes against Davidson with 24 and 18 points re spectively. Alton Jones and Max Walser played brilliant floor games, both offensive and defen sive, for the hot Tornadoes. When Asheville-Biltmore’s Bull dogs stepped into the wake of the Tornadoes, no one seemed to no tice that they were there. Five Brevard players hit double figures in disfiguring the Bulldogs with no trouble. Barbee led the melee with a 21-point splurge. Hensley was second with 17. Others hitting the dual digits were Jones and Walser with 12 points each, and Coggins with 11. i Tornado Talk I College Students! During ar interview just as the season wak underway, Martin answered a ques tion with a bit of mystery hidden in his words: “I don’t exipect to lose a home game all season.” Picking the picture up with the first game after exams, the Tor nadoes will find themselves lock ing horns with the Baptists from Mars Hill, a team not too impres sive to date, but a team that is im proving with each game. Mars Hill will invade Brevard January 26. After a two-day rest, Hiwassee will come to town. Hiwassee, if you will rememiber, was the team that hand ed Brevard their second loss of the season back in Novemiber to the tune of 61-58. CLASSIFIED ADS FOR SALE—1957 Molbile Home. 2 ibedrooms.
