(Photo by Scoop Scott) Apporximately 100 candidates for graduation will participate in com mencement week-end activities on May 28-29, beginning with the An nual Alumni Luncheon on May 28 and ending with the Commence ment Reception on May 29. Saturday morning, following re hearsal and preparation for coim- mencement, the Brevard Alumni Association will honor the gradu ating class with a luncheon. Spe cial guests will be Miss Lucile Smith, Miss Dulcie Hayes, and Dr. Burt W. Loomis. All candidates for graduation are required to attend the Alumni luncheon to begin at one o’clock. Saturday evening, at eight o’clock, Mr. Nelson Adams and Mr. Ralph V. Reed of the Music depart ment will present the annual com mencement concert. Participating in the concert will be the Brevard Orchestra To Give Concert BJC Board Of Trustees Will Meet Today On Saturday, May 28, 1960, at 8 p.m. in the Sims Campus Center Building the Glee Club and College Orchestra will present the annual music program Which will be visi tors and guests of the 1960 gradu ating class. For this occasion the orchestra,! under the direction of Ralph V. Reed, will play a March and Pre lude and Fugue by Handel, ex cerpts from Schubert’s 5th Sym phony, Sibelius’s tone poem Fin landia and will close with the tra ditional Pa.T.ip and Circumstance of Elgar. Members of the college orches tra include: Warren Atkinson, Bill Barnes, Charles Causby, Jerry Chappell, James Crenshaw, Jean Fluke, Frances Guffey. Susan Gamble, John Howren, Susan Jowers, C. K. Lee, Dale Losey Sara Lowdermilk, Nancy McCullough, Karen Schneider Lewis Sauls, Linda Stout, and Linda Thacker On Friday, May 20, the trustees of Brevard College along with their wives will be on campus. At ten o’clock the several different com mittees will meet, and ait eleven o’clock the Board of Trustees wll meet, when the plans of the Build ing and Grounds Coimimittee will be presented to the trustees. The campus ladies of the College will hold the annual coffee for the wives of the trustees from ten to twelve o’clock in the Annabell Jones Hall. Honored guests will be Miss Lucile Smith and Miss Dulcie Hayes. College glee club and orchestra. The Commencement sermon will be delivered by Dr. James G. Hug gins, Pastor of the First Methodist Church, Gastonia. Prior to graduation, at 3:30, Mr. Nelson Adams will give a recital cn the Carillon bells. Ait 4:00, the candidates for grad uation make their final trip down the aisle of the Sims Oamipus Ce»- ter Building. Principal speakers for the afternoon will be Dr. E. McLarty, president of Brevard Col lege, and Dr. Clarence Raymond Carpenter, professor of psychology, Pennsylvania State University. Dr. John B. Bennett, academic dean ot Brevard College, will prfr sent the honors and awards. At thfe time, the winners of Hhe Oiin Mathieson Scholarship, the most versatile student, the best student in history, and the Honor Roll and Dean’s List vsdll be announced. Following, Dr. Bennett and Prea- dent McLarty will award the As sociates in Arts degrees and Jniuor College Diplomas to the graduating class. A reception for the graduating class will be given in the facnity lounge imim'Cdiately following conir mencement. (Photo by Pat Austin) Hazel Williams, a rising soplia- roore from Morganton, will be the president of the Big Sister Organi zation in 1960-61. Hazel was dhosen from the new BSO candidates by the retiring group of Big Sisters. Included in the new group of freshmen advisory counselors are two foreign students—Asta Gabri elsson of Borga, Finland, and Fran ces Kwok of Hong Konig, China. Others are Barbara Beverly, Kingsport, Tennessee; Vandalyn Brown, Marion, N. C.; Patsy Green, Thomasville; Judy Grogan, Char lotte; Ilena King, Hendersonville; Dianne Nesbitt, Black Mountain; Linda Phillips and Barbara Pl^ Kannapolis; Sandra Smith, Marion, S. C.; Londa Stout, Lancaster; Marie Teele, Shelby; and Anna Williaimson, Dublin, Ga. These girls were chosen for tte BSO on the basis of scholarship (a 1.5 average), character, and personality by the faculty and the 1959-60 BSO. They will attend the Leadership Workshop prior to the new academic year and will act as sophomore advisors. The Big Sisters will give a break fast in the girls’ dorm on Sunday, May 22, a tradition of the organi zation each year.
