DARK CONTINENT" MISSIONARY
VISITS caMpus, shows slides
Miss Patricia Rothrock, a
missionary social worker from
Elizabethyille in the Congo,
returned to her native North
Carolina in September, 1962.
Miss Rothrock presented color
slides which she had taken in
Jie modern “Dark Continent”
it chapel on November 8, to
(wrtray the conflicts which
jxist in Africa.
Miss Rothrock, who has
spent three years in the Con-
?o, is from Mt. Airy, North
Carolina. She attended Worn-
m’s College of the University
)f North Carolina and receiv-
Jd her M.A. Degree from
Scarritt College. She has
been Director of Christian Ed
ucation in Mt. Airy and Hen-
lersonville churches. She
served as a deaconess in
North Georgia before she
went to Africa.
Her primary concern in her
speech was to correct the
many fallacies incorporated
into the trend of thinking
when it comes to Africa. She
presented Africa as a conti-
aent with growing pains,
showing the great ranges of
life from near-prehistoric
existence to modem cities
that are constantly springing
lip. New churches, new
schools, and new work camps
ire visual evidence that Afri
ca is undergoing a great grow
ing process. Miss Rothrock
plans to return to Elizabeth-
ville in August.

dent McLarty.
“He is recognized in the con
ference as one of the most effec

ident stated.
“And among the pastorates he

Three Brevard College stu
dents will portray important
roles in “Charley’s Aunt”, which
will be presented by the Brevard
Little TheaVe, Thursday and

to the general public, with a
special performance for college
students being scheduled Friday

Oscar Smith plays the role of
Jack Chesney, a college student

and who through his “drive” sets
the pace of the play. Larry Da
vis portrays the role of Brassett,
manservant to the college boys.
The part of Amy Spettigue, one
of the girl friends, is taken by
Vicki CaldweU. Gayle Lance,
another Brevard College student,

for the production.
“Charley’s Aunt” is a world-
famous farce by Brandon Thom
as and takes place in a college
setting. It will be directed by
Robroy Farquhar, managing-di-
rector of the Flat Rock Play
house.
It is essential to the plot of
the story that Charley’s rich aunt
from Brazil act as chaperone for
a dinner engagement that two
students have made with their
girl friends. When the arrival
of the aunt is delayed, the re
sourceful students dress another
student in female attire, com
plete with long dress, petticoats
and a wig. This bit of disguise
leads to many hilarious situa
tions, including two proposals of
marriage to the substitute aunt,
played by Leonard Poteet, who
displayed his talent for comedy

Kappa Chi
Aids Cuban
Kappa Chi is diligently work
ing on a new project. Mario DeU
Amico, a Brevard Student, has
informed the organization that
his minister in Havana, Cuba,
who is also the district superin
tendent in that area, is in ur
gent need of medical supplies be
cause he would not pledge his
allegiance to the Castro regime.
Kappa Chi checked and found
that the medicine in need does
not require a prescription and
is very inexpensive. The only
problem is getting the medicine
to Cuba. The club hopes to get
sponsorship from the Interna
tional Methodist Relief Organi
zation in Miami and send the
medicine through their super
vision.
