MSF Gains New Members The Business Club of Brevard College invites all students in terested in the field of business to join this organization and share in the experiences of learning about the problems and procedures of the business world. _ The purpose of the club is to bridge the gap between the class room and the working world. The first meeting will be held in early October. Support Our Advertisers Test scores resulting from the battery of standardized tests giv en all entering students have now been compiled by Mr. C. E. Roy, instructor in psychology and religion and director of guidance and counseling. “Last year’s entering class and this year’s entering class just about tie for honors for the high est average scores on basic abil ity (IQ) among all the College’s entering classes,” reports Mr. Roy. “Freshmen may feel confi dent, then, that they are able to do college work. But this report is not intended to mislead them into thinking they need not work.” “While our average is several points above the national fresh men standard,” Mr. Roy contin ues, “it is one of the purposes of Brevard College to place a challenge before each individual student in terms of his or her basic competence. I advise—ev en urge—the setting of a good study schedule,” Mr. Adams The Brevard College music department is planning several informal recitals for all music students. These short perform ances are planned for the sec ond and fourth Fridays of every month. Although no formal presenta tions have yet been planned, it is hoped that some organ recitals will be given in the Methodist Church. •IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIII'III COMPLIMENTS OF AUSTIN STUDIO Your Photo and Record Center MORRIS PHARMACY Your Family Drug Store Corner Main and Broad The Methodist Student Fellow ship held its first meeting of the year on Sunday, September 15. The meeting was held at the Brevard Methodist Church and was preceded by a spaghetti sup per given by the WSCS of the church. Following the meal the meet ing began as Mr. Nelson Adams led the group in singing hymns. A short devotional was then giv-1 en by Jim Ruiz and Annette Hyatt. Marian Staley, president, gave a short talk on the activi ties of the Methodist Student Fellowship for the coming year. This meeting proved to be a very successful period of food and fellowship for approximately 175 students and several mem bers of the faculty. Just why did he come to Bre vard? “I like it.” A North Caro linian—his home is in Charlotte — he likes the town and the country around it. He feels that the College itself has a good chance of continuing to offer a good program for music stu dents. Since we students will be mak ing our holme in Brevard for the months to come, we will be trad ing with many of the local mer chants. Some of these business men advertise in the Clarion. It is likely that you vnll prefer to trade with your school paper’s advertisers, The Clarion would like to say, on behalf of all the students, a special “thank you” to Patter-, sons of Brevard. The envelopes, containing Arpege, English Leather, and a Brevard Emblem were opened with many “oh's” and “ah’s” of appreciation. College Conducts You Say You What? Is that your trouble? Well, lift your head and smile, smile, smile! You’ll show the world, you’ll show them all! But, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try a grin. As for his plans for this year at Brevard, Mr. Adams is ‘ so mixed up with scheduling” that he hasn’t had time to form any definite plans. He hopes, though, that there will be a great deal of expansion in the music de partment. To continue his studies in music history, he hopes to spend time this year with Dr. Frank Baker at Duke University doing research for a dissertation on early Methodist hymnology. He will probably study there next summer. As a teacher, Mr. Adams pre fers the field of music history, but enjoys organ and choral con ducting as well. He plays organ and piano primarily, and has written, but not yet pubhshed, several pieces for the organ, a string trio, and an anthem. When asked if he would ever stop teaching, Mr. Adams laugh ed “I decide that every night! But really, although he had plan ned to go into church work and began teaching only as an ex- (Continued from Page One) Sion, “the self-study, while it en courages an institution to exam ine its history and to determine its position in the educational world, is not a status study only; but is one which should make it possible for the institution to project its educational program and plan its growth within the framework of its purpose.” (Richard D. Howe, Self-Study Secretary). VlUAlti tHI periment, he doubts now that he will ever leave the teaching pro fession. There are many who hope that he will remain a teacher in Bre vard’s music department for years to come. If his hopes for expansion are realized, the Col lege will have an even fuller music program. Brevard hopes that Mr. Adatms will stay, now that he has returned. SCHULMAN'S Everything For the Co-Ed Tankersley's Florist Brevard, N. C. Member F.TD.
