C., OCTOBER 18, 1963 NUMBER 2 OLD GRADS RETURN FOR HOMECOMING Beam Grant Now Matched The construction of the Beam Administration building on the campus of Brevard col lege was authorized by the Board of Trustees at their an nual fall meeting last Friday. This beautiful structure will be erected in the quadrangle^ with the new Science building, and construction will begin in the spring when weather condi tions permit. This building is named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Grier Beam, of Cherryville, whose challenge grant of $100,000.00, initiated the most recent capi tal funds drive. Matching funds of $125,000.00 were raised by the Board of Trustees under the able direc tion of Allen H. Sims, of Gaston ia who is chairman of the board. The trustees approved other long-range projects at the im portant meeting last Friday. The present cafeteria will be enlarged to serve 50 per cent more students, and the $500,- 000 Campus Center building will be remodeled to become the music building. Plans were formulated for the building of a new library, and efforts were launched far necessary funds for its con- pletion. The present library building will then be remodeled to be come the Student Center build ing, which will be named The Sims Student Center in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Sims’ two sons, Albert Harold Sims and Rufus David Sims. The new library will bear the same name as the old one, “The James Addison Jones Library”, in memory of the father of Edwin L. The Student Government As sociation placed a suggestion box in the Soda Shop and studente were asked to submit names if they would like to see the name Tornadoes changed. Several names were suggested and many were suggested more than once. The voting was as follows: Bears -16, Blue Knights—80, High- iiders—132, Wildcats—30. The new name, however, will not be official until it has been approved by the Executive Com mittee of the college. Milner Wins In Run-Off Library Receives New Books The College library has been receiving large orders of new books of every sort for months. Using the Buckner Memorial Fund for many of the books, the Library has purchased a new vol ume of the Encyclopedia of Art, music dictionaries, foreign lang uage dictionaries, a number of standard biographies, history, many, fiction works, and works cf general interest. The librarians urge the stu dents to watch the New Books After two weeks of hard cam- foj the orders of new books placed there each week. These books will be available for circulation on Thursday of the week they arrive. Before that Jones Announces New Staff Members paigning, Hugh Milner was elect ed president of the Freshman Class. In the first elec tion Dot Goedert was elected vice president. Donna Nichols was elected sec- ; etary - treasurer over Dianna Young and Rosemary Webb. For the office of S.G.A. representa tive Judy Harper was elected over Shep Oliver. The climax of the campaigns came on the day before the final elections. Students and candi dates gathered in the CCB audi torium for a political rally. All the speeches were of a very high quality. Rising Reigns Over Festivities Tomorrow promises to be one of the biggest and best Home comings in Brevard College his tory. According to all indications, a large number of old grads will be back on campus for a week end of visiting and festivities. The program will begin after classes end on Saturday. Class reunions will be held, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Also at 2:00 p.m. the Homecoming game will be play ed with Brevard’s soccer team taking on Furman. At 3:00 p.m. the annual bas ketball game will be played with tlie college team challenging the returning alumni. Taylor, Green, and Jones Hall are having “open house” from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Students, alum ni, and visitors are invited to tour the dormitories. Refresh ments will be served in the par lor of Jones Hall during this time. From 4:00 - 6:00 the swimming pool will be opened. Everyone is invited to take a dip in the new pool. The day’s activities will culmi nate with the annual Homecom ing Dance in the Campus Center Building, beginning at 8:00 p.m. ' “Fall Fantasy” has been chosen as the theme for this first formal dance of the year. The PLAIDS from Charlotte will provide music for dancing. Conducted by Albert Chaffoo, the orchestra is to perform four subscription concerts, a chil dren’s concert, plus three “Bon us Performances” in an exciting Mozart Music Festival. The subscription concerts will be presented at 8:15 p.m. in the David Millard Auditorium on Tuesday evenings, November 5, January 14, March 17, and May 17.
