A CHRISTMAS PRAYER
Almighty God our Father, who hast given us
grace at this time to celebrate the birth of our Savior
Jesus ChriS't, we laud and magnify Thy Holy Name
for the countless bl-f^ssings which He has brought;
and we beseech Thee to grant that we may ever set
forth Thy praise in joyful obedience to Thy will.
Help us here and now' to pause and think how
empty our lives would be were it not for Christ’s
coming to the world. When we imagine the uncheck
ed cruelty and lust, the arid deserts of spiritual bar
renness, and the dull, dead despair of lost men and
women who would know Thee not, we draw back in
horror from the abyss. Then again Ave will begin to
see how much He means to us; and a faith will rise
up within our hearts that is a saving faith, a hope in
Him which lifts up uur spirits, and a love of Him
which blesses our homes, our College, our daily con
tacts with our fellows. What would we be without
Him? We know that answer all too well. We would
be lost. Life without Him would not be life at all.
Let this Christmas be a renewing of the mind
and spirit of Jesus Christ in our thinking and a cleans
ing of our hearts and lives by His pure presence.
Give each of us new courage to live the Christian life
in our day and generation, bearing witness to His
saving grace before men. Let some of His radiant
joy come to our weary world through us.
O God of compassion and tender mercy, minister
to Thy servants according to their de'‘;p and personal
needs. Be Thou the companion of thosre who sorrow,
a support to those who are wearied by life’s vexa
tions, a protector to all who seek Thy divine help
when temptations tug at imagination’s sleeve. Give
guidance and sound motive to those who are capable
and strong. Undergird with Thy might the weak and
halting and hesitant Christian, lest he convince othere
that faith cannot be strong, and God cannot help His
own. Uphold us with a sense of Thy everlasting pres
ence that we fail not men nor Thee.
May these holidays soon to begin not come and
go as a matter of course, but may each of us cultivate
times of contemplation when we think upon the inner
meaning of Christmas; Thy great love for mankind,
the wants and needs of others, and our own spiritual
revival in the fact of the birth and life and ministry
of our Savior. Amen.
