On the second row are Dave Morrow, Luther TORNADO SPORTS by Wes Howe Section Martin Goes To Kansas Coach Chick Martin attended the annual NJCAA national meeting March 15-20 in Hutchin son, Kansas. The meeting is held in conjunction with the NJCAA basketball tournament. Coach Martin is the director of Region X, which includes 19 Junior Colleges from West Vir ginia, Virginia, North Carolina, ond South Carolina. The main function of the meeting is to discuss national eligibility rules and regulations, to study the districts tlux)ugh- out the nation, and to work out athletic programs for national meets and tournaments. Other functions are to appraise bids from areas that want to host na tional events, and to set up a budget. The directors, of which Coach Martin is one, control all sports held between NJCAA colleges. Smith, Johnny Logan, Vernon Arnold, and Steve Ferrell. Standing are Richard Aldridge, Randy Stoneman, Donnie Simpson, Don Cagle, Buford Burke, and Stan Perry. Nomads Down Tornadoes The baseball season opens to morrow for the Tornadoes. The team takes on the University of North Carolina’s freshman team. The tornadoes have a new coach this year. He is Danny aost. Coach Bost played for Catawba College and Brevard. Coach Bost has lined up a 16- game schedule for this spring. Several of these games will be double headers. There are only two letter men on the team, but there are 16 very good freshmen out. The Tornadoes will have a mound staff of seven this year. Bob Stallings is the only sopho more pitcher on the team. Steve Ferrell, Buford Burke and Bill Smith will be doing the catching this year. In the infield Dbn Cagle and Luther Smith will be playing first base. At second base will be David Morrow. Playing short-stop are Stan Perry and Dennis Houston. Sophomore Richard Aldridge will be playing at the third comer of the infield. Dennis Houston will also play third base. Playing in the out-field will be Bob Stallings, Buford Burke, Donnie Simpson, Randy Stone man, Tony Russell and Bill Smith. Steve Harrison is head mana ger and Steve Jones will be his assistant. The material is there, as well as the coaching. The weather will be getting warmer (we hope). Phone 34240 Intramural In several days of action Mr. Tauscher brought to a close vol ley ball season, the table tennis and badminton tournaments. Taylor Basement and I won the volley ball tournament by beating Taylor II 2-1. The boys from Taylor Basement and I won the overall volleyball tour nament championship by de feating Taylor III, the league champions, 2-0. Basement Green ran away with the table tennis champion ship by taking first and second in the singles and first in the doubles. Bob Pickens was the singles champion. He defeated Bob Ferry, also of the Basement, 2-1. Fred Walton of Green II and Ken Cook of Green I tied for third. The doubles tesun from Base ment Green, Donny Simpson and Rich Gardella, defeated Bruce Smith and Sherman Fear ing of Taylor III 2-0 for the championship. Taylor Basement and I were the badminton champions with 46 points. Henderson Howell defeated his team mate Richard Green 2-1, Both boys were from Taylor Basement and I. Milton Milner of Taylor in and Larry Burch of Green III tied for third place. BUI Dow and Jim Cabe of Taylor HI took the doubles championship from Ridiard Gardella and Geary Crist of Basement Green, 2-0. In the point standings at mid term, Basement Green still holds on to first place by 19 Information Brevard Soccer Club lost points over Taylor Basement game of the year to the j Asheville Nomads. The score of ■ Intramural Point Standings Basement Green 475 The Nomads scored in all four Taylor B .and I 456 periods. They taUied two in the Taylor III 408 first period and one in the sec- Green I and Day 362 ond. In the second half they Taylor II 346 scored one in the third quarter Green III 343 and two in the fourth. 304 Prank Harmon scored both of Brevard’s goals. Both scores —came in the third quarter. Mr. Tauscher scored three _ _ 1 ■ ■ for the Nomads. Scheduled Rogers and Hammerstein’s “The King and 1” will be pre sented April 8, 9, and 10 at 8:15 in the Brevard High School Aud itorium. F*rofessor Nelson Ad ams is the Musical Director. Ten Brevard College students and three faculty members will play in the orchestra. Student tickets are available in the Mu sic Building. The price is $1.00.
