They won on March 20 agaimsit North Green ville 8-0 on the 2 hit pitching of Jim Dollyhigh. Jim struck out 14 and walked only 5. Danny Denton and Vic Sutherland led the nine hit offense with dup licate 2 for 5 performances. Botli batted dn 2, wiith Denton hitting a three - bagger. On the 22 and 23, the Torna does traveled to Ohapel Hill to play Carolina’s freshmen. The fiTsit game saw Brevard drop a close 1-0 game. Steve W'hitaker gave up only 4 hits, with the lone run being unearn ed. Brevard lost the second game 12-2 ,as 3 Tornado hurl- ers gave up 14 hits. On the 27, Brevard defeated Brewton - Parker, Ga. ,8 - 5 in ithe first game of ^thelr swing through that state. Vic Suther land won in relief of Danny Denton. Sutherland, in 5 in nings, struck out 8 and walk ed 4. Milton Harkey and Mike Zeugner each batted in 2 runs. The next day, Brevard lost to South Georgia 3-2 on a balk. A single by Boland started the Georgia rally. He stole second and thiird. Knight struck out, (but reached first on the ball being dropped. Frank Jewell struck out Rinehart and Cason, buit then the balk by the catch er Lemmonds allowed Boland to score. Brevard lost on the 30 to BreWton - Parker 7 - 2. B. P. had a 12 -hit attack against Ron Morgan and Taylor Moore. The Georgia teams proved tougher as South Georgia de feated Brevard 8 - 2 and Mid dle Georgia won 5 - 3. On March 23, the team jour neyed to Furman University and the highly competitive News - Piedmont Relays. M- though there were no team win ners declared, the mighty men of B. C. finished in first place, outscoring Johnson C. Smith College by Vz point. However, Coach TaUey was very disap pointed with individual perfor mances. “1 felt that we couid have done a lot better. The compett- tion was keen, buit we still should have done better. We did not win a single first place,” he stated. Coach Talley felt the team performed better than he had expected in the meet. He said “I think we finished second in the meet. Having been out of school and not working togeth er for a week, I think the team did exceptionally well. The distance medley relay team of Mike Poole, Mike Scur- to, Ned Jones .and Dave Fus sell set a new school record with a 10:15.0 Clocking. The old record, set last year at the Florida Relays, was 10:28.7. Performances in the Florida Relays are as follows: Ed Holder, 5th 120 Hi^ Hur dles, 15.2 Drew Baron, 5th Shot Put, performance in the doublenhead- er. Mike Zeugner and Vic Suth erland had the only extra base hits with a double each. Brevard is 3 - 0 in the con ference. Poole was running a f.ne first leg of the relay and was a key to EC’s possible victory in the event. Olympic hopeful Bob Gray ran “a good, good race” as termed by Coach Tr.lley in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Bob will continue to run the event un- liil July when he then wdl! travel to Sacremento, Cail. to try out for the Olympic team. The thindads ran their first conference meet April 2 at Gardner - Webb and staged a stunning 101-43 rampage over the Bulldogs. Four new school records were set.
