C., SEPTEMBER 6, 1968 Number 1 Registration Initiates Big Year Memorial Service Conducted A. memorial service for the late President of Brevard Col- jege, Dr. Emmett Kennedy Mc- Larty, Jr., was conducted the evening of Septemiber 4 at the Brevard United Methodist Church. The church is adjacent to the B'C campus. j Ministers in charge were Rev. C. Edward Roy, Chaplain to tiie college; Rev. Nelson F. Adams, Chairman of the Di vision of Music and Fine Arts; Rev. E. Wannamaker Hardin, Jr., Business Manage and Chairman of the Presidential Council; Rev. W. Louis Miles, Chairman of the Division of So cial Studies and Religic.n; Rev. Grady H. Wicker, Dean of me -College. Members of the Chan cel Choir also took part in the service. Various hymns and musical tributes were made by the two choirs, the organ, and the at- teadiag students, faculty, staff, and faanily. Rev. C. Edward Roy, the min ister in charge, commented in his remarks: “The college cam pus, as it exist today, is itself a worthy memorial to a truly worthy man.” Please see Page Two of the Clarion. MR. LEIGHTON MARTIN, Athletic Director, gives advice to a Expansion Program On The Move Construction began in early August on the latest phase of the capital expansion program at Brevard College. A new classroom building, comprising over 30,000 square feet is under construction in the main quadrangle of the col lege. A. held its first meeting for the 1968-69 term on Sept. 4, 1968 in the conference room of the Beam Admiinistra- tion Building. Members of the S. G. A. for this vear are: Pres., Bin Pay ton; V. Pres., John Lum; Sec.- Treas., Teresa Lax; Social Cihairmen, Jackie Tyler and Dave Wendelin; Editor of Clarion, Wayne Morton; Pres, of E. Beam, Ed Bateman; Pres, of Taylor, Bill Rankin, Pres, of Green, Garnett Beasley; Pres, of W. Beam, Bonnie Brewibak- er; Pres, of Jones, Carol Char les; Pres., of Christian Council, Linda Smith; Pres, of Day Stud ents, June Garren; Pres, and representatives of sophomore and freshmeo classes, which have not been elected yet, and Convocation Held “Today in our society, there is a great conflict between technology and human values.” Suich were the words of Rev. E. Wannamaker Hardin, Jr., the speaker at the annual Fall Convocation presented Sept. 1 in Boshamer Gymnasium. Mr. Hardin, Business Manager of Brevard College, was introduc ed by Rev. Louis Miles, Head of the Social Science Dept, lilr. Hardin went on to say Homecoming Announcement Homecoming is October 12 plans are already being lonn^ated. The September 4 Meeting of the SGA yielded some ideas, but others are need ed. An assembly was scheduled on Thursday, Sept 5 at 6:30 to explain to the student body about class elections. In order for one to run for an office, he must have a petition consist ing of 60 names. The deadline on° petitions is Tuesday night. Sept 10. A motion was made, second ed and passed that the Vice President of S. G. A. and the representatives of each class be a Permanent member of the Judicial Board. Dean Roberts suggested that a speaking stone be placed be tween Jones Hall and Beam Dor mitory, and out by the lily pond for the purpose and use ot anyone wishing to speak. He emphasized the importance of human values in controlling technology and harnessing tech nology to benefit human beings. Mr. Hardin also stated that the world needs to come to an awareness of this fact, for the people have lost control of the real values and have allowed the technological aspect to as sume the actual controls “Education is always chang ing,” stated Mr. Hardin,” and it is in itself an experiment ev ery year.” It is a challenge to faculty and students to as sume the ever - changing ex pectations.” Chaplain C. Edward Roy pre sided over the program and in troduced Mr. Leighton W\ Mar tin, Athletic Director. Mr. Mar tin in turn presented the new 'D'ean of the College. Dean Grady H. Whitaker who intro duced the new faculty members. Brevard College opened its doors for the 1968 fall semes ter to 642 students this past week end to begin its thirty- second year of instruction as a two-year college institution. Faculty members and stud ent leaders were the first to arrive on the Brevard College campus last week. The instruc tors reported for work Monday morning and the students came Tuesday. They spent the next few days in an effort to ready the dorms and buildings for the college’s 383 freshmen, who arrived Thursday. New faculty members were introduced to college policies and procedures in an orienta tion meeting with Dean Grady H. Whicker, Monday morning. The bewildered, but excited freshmen started arriving early Thursday morning. The largest freshman class in the hi&tory of the school continued to con verge on the campus until the early evening hours. The 1968 freshman class represents 15 sitates and two foreign coun tries. The first official meeting of the freshmen was held Thursday evening in the Dunham Audi torium. The students were welcomed by Dean Whicker; and the main speaker of the evening was Professor Louis Miles, who related to the stud ents the history of the school. A movie, “When Comedy Was King” followed Mr. Miles’ talk. Friday proved to 'be a day of more confusion than work for the freshmen as they were split into three alphaibetical groups and were tested on physical fit ness, freshman placment in academic courses, and instru«t- ed in the advantages of the- school’s music department. Freshmen assembled in Dun ham Auditorium again Friday night and were informed of the rules and regulations govern ing the college. Students were dismissed to go to the homes or other des ignated areas to meet with previously assigned faculty ad visors. The freshmen preregistered Saturday morning with their faculty advisors.
