A SALUTE TO
“The Best Ever”
The soccer season at Brevard is over. The 1968
team will never play again. Another team will arise
and take its place, perhaps a better team and per
haps an inferior one. The fact remains, however,
that the 1968 soccer team, although compiling a rec
ord that is only the school’s second best, yielded the
best squad that has ever played soccer for Brevard
College. A team’s success is usually measured by its
lost record, but often a better team has an in-

cer squad.
So is the case with the 68 Brevard soc-
Tornadoes Set Records
This years team saw many
records fall and now has set
new goals for future teams to
aim fO'r.
The team’s record of 5-5-1
was not the best in Brevard his
tory, but seco.nd best. The team
scored a season total of 44
goals averaging 4 goals per
game which constitutes two new
records. Mike Michner set a
new standard by scaring 13
goals and having 9 assists to his
credit. Gedric Gutherie scored
eiight goals, Jim McCombs tallied
for seven, and Don Kinkendall
six, all breaking the previous
record.
Defensive wise, Brevard was
weak this year, allowing a rec
ord 34 goals to be scored
against them.
Brevard’s biggest margin of
victory was also seen this year
as the Tornadoes tramipled Mon-
itreat Anderson 9-^1. The victory
over Clemson 7-6 marked the
most goals ever scored in a
Brevard soccer match. The de
feat by Tusculum also saw the
achievement of another reco'rd,
the most goals scored in a half.
Ten of 14 goals were scored in
the second half of this game.
Five goals in the last quarter
against Montreat Anderson also
constitutes a new record plus
the fact that six players for Bre
vard scored another record.
Three of the team members
are prospects for the American
University Soccer squad. Don
Kirkendall, Duibb Tullar, and
Bob Hansoti have been inter
viewed by A U officials and are
considering playing soccer
there.
COACH TAUSCHER
BC Takes Early Lead;
Downs Wingate
Aifter trailing for the first
several minutes of play, Bre
vard’s cagers took a 2 point
lead with 13 minutes remaining
in the first half, vndened their
margin, and banded Wingate an
81-62 defeat, here Tuesday
night.
Joe Kagel sparked the win
ning cause, tossinig in 30 points,
aided by Charles Hunt’s 22 point
performance. High man for
Wingate was Rick Canpenter
with 18 points, followed closely
by Mike McComib’s 16 point tal
ly.
Brevard’s full court press
began clicking aboiiit midway
through the first half causing
several Wingate miscues that
led to a Brevard scoring drive.
Costly turnovers and fouls
dominated the first period ac
tion. with Brevard sending Win
gate to the Charity line an un
official 14 times and gave up
the ball 14 times to the op
ponents 10. (unofficial statis
tics). Wingate’s errors were
fewer than Brevard’s in the first
I>eriod, but were costly mis
takes.
The second half saw a some
what slower, more deliberate
game with fewer Brevard bon
ers and more by Wingate as
they had to play "catch-uip” baU.
Brevard capitalized on Wingate’s
mistakes in the final period
and rolled to a 19 point victory.
Brevard is 1-1 in conference
as the team takes its exam
break.
