C„ FEBRUARY 14. 1969 Number 17 Actor, Director To Host Festival Volume XXXVI Director Takes Leave Of Absence Mrs. George Walker is not jjqjected to return as director of Green Dormitory this semes ter Due to the serious illness of her daughter she has taken leave in order to take care of three grandchildren. It is hoped that she will be able to return to her position this summer. In her place Green Dormitory welcomes Mrs. Erma Hassel- man. Mrs. Hasselman is origi nally from New York State. She attended Columbia Uni versity and is a member of Gamma Alpha Chi. Business has been her main occupation. Green Dormitory appreciates Mrs. Hasselman’s concern and is looking forward to complet ing a good semester. Four Students Are Attending Conference Four Brevard College stud ents left late Wednesday night to attend the 1969 College Edi tors’ Conference sponsored by the United States Student Press Association. The confer ence will be held until Sunday evening. The four students are Wayne Morton and Ronnie H. Smith, editor and associate editor, re spectively, of the Clarion staff, and Bill Payton and John Lum, president and vice - president, respectively, of the SGA. The conference, which is be ing held at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D. C., has as its main topic “The Economics of So.cial Disorder” and will of fer small disscussion groups to speak to various well known men. Briefings will be held on Thursday and Friday at the CIA offices in Langley, Va., “A New Look Will Be Topic “The Church Must Take a New Look at Drink ing, Drunkenness and Alcoholism” will be the top ic of Dr. Wayne Womer at chapel on Febraary 26, Dr. Womer will be on campus through Friday eve ning, and will eat most of his meals in the cafe teria, 80 students may discuss these and other rel evant questions with him. Any group, club, dorm, or just interested peo ple may ask for him to speak with them, and can be scheduled through Dean Burgess. He will bring with him, movies, regarding uM of drugs and alcohol. The movies will 1» avail able to all, and the schedule of their showings will be posted by February 20. On Friday afternoon, February 28, at 4:00 Mr. Womer, Mr. Coan, and Mr. Godey will have a panel discussion on drugs and alcohol for all stud ents to ask questions. The Pentagon, State Depart ment, Brooklinigs Institution, Urban Coalition, International Association on Chiefs of Po lice, the Urban Lands Institute and in other areas. Also sche duled for Thursday and Friday were interviews with several Cabinet Secretaries. _ Muhammad Ali will discuss cinama verite in terms of a film on his own transition from Cassius Clay to Muham- med Ali. He will also make comments on the accompanying social conditions. Friday afternoon’s discussion groups will address themselves to the problems related to the growth of the economic inde pendence for the black people in America. Miss Winslow is un der the instructor of Herring. Miss Virginia Tillotson v/ill direct for the Madrigals. Three Full-Length Films Will Be Shown Mr. Van Keyser of Dabney S. Lancaster Com munity College will be the host for a film festival, on Friday and Saturday of next week. The film to be shown are “Whistle Down the Wind,” Friday at 7:30; “David and Lisa,” Saturday at 2:30 and “La Strada,” Saturday night at 8:00. “Whistle Down the Wind” is a film about children v>^ho be lieve Christ has returned to earth. The man who claims to be Christ is really an escaped convict. The power of a child’s belief is vividly expressed in this picture. Shot in Philadelphia, “David and Lisa” portrays an emotion ally disturbed boy who meets a fifteen year old girl in a mental home. Through the help of a doctor, the two young peo ple begin to understand thnigs around them. The third film, “La Strado” (The Road) is an Italian play. It is the story of a man’s lone liness and his search for the meaning in his life. Mr. Van Keyser received his B. A. degree in English from Emory and Henry College, in Virginia. He received his M.F.A. degree in dramatic art and speech from Virginia Com monwealth Uaalversity. He has appeared in a numiber of plays including “As You Like It,” "Ondine,” and “John Brawn’s Body.’' Mr. Van Keyser has directed such plays as “The Sandbox,” “Archy and Mehitabel,” and “Ten little Indians.” Presently working as direc tor and resigner for the Col lege Players’ at Dabney X. Lan caster Community College, he also teaches drama and speuch. This summer Mr. Van Keyser plans to tour England and Ire land and study the theater while he is there. Spring Court Is Announced Mr. and Miss Sophomore, and Ml', and Miss Freshman, and also the members of the Spring Court were announced in an assemibly Tuesday night. Mr. and Miss Sophomore are Gary Cross, of Topton, and Miss Jackie Tyler from Char leston, S. C. Mr. and Miss Freshman are Ken Eaton, from Mocksville, and Miss Jeanette Land, from Asheville. The Sophomore members of the Spring Court are Nancy Harrington, Terry Sherrill, and Linda Smith. The two freshman attendants are Janice Carter and Terri VenaiWe. SGA Seeking Nominations The Student Government Association is seek- ng nominations for the two vacant offices of Social Co - Chairman. Students interested in seeking the offices should contact an SGA member and attend the SGA meet ing Wednesday after chapel in the conference room of Beam Administration Building. Social Behavior Committee Will Hold Final Open Meeting The Committee on Social Behavior has on its agenda only one more meeting for students. This meeting will be February 18 in the student lounge. The Committee has expressed that it would like to hear from all interested students, particularly those who are satisfied with the present social cituation at Brevard College. This will be the last opportunity for stud ents to express their opinions on the social codes and rules of Brevard College before the recom mendations are submitted by the committee.
