febroary 28, 19® the clarion PAGE THSES BREVARD COLLEGE MUSIC CHAMBER ENSEMBLE College Chamber Ensemble Will Tour Beginning Saturday The Brevard College Cham- l)er Ensemble will be on tour March 1 - 4 and will sing for the morning service at Centen ary Methodist Church in Win ston - Salem, on March 2. They will sponsor a sacred “The Campus and Yesterday’s People” was the theme of the annual Methodist Student Move ment retreat held at Appala chian State University this past week end. The group which consisted of students from colleges and universities throughout the state dug deeply into the prob lems of poverty and racism. The rash state ment shocked the audience but it was planned that way in or- concert that night at the South- side Baptist Church at 6:15 p. m. On Monday niight, March 3, at 7:30 p. m., they will perform at the Broad Street Methodist Church in Statesville. They will be singing at several schools der to provoke discussion on the question of what is wrong with the Church. It worked as everyone became involved in the discussion. The visiting students also enjoyed the hospitality of the Appalachian State University MSai chapter. Saturday night there was a basketball game and coffee house entertain ment on campus. The MSM chapter was ap preciative to Appalachian State University, the First Methodist Church, the Religious Activities fund and to Mr. and Mrs. E. Wannamaker Hardin for mak ing the trip possible. in the Winston - Salem, States ville, and Hickory area during this time. Composed of vocal and in strumental students, the group performs both sacred and se cular music in churches, schools and civic organization meetings. The students are a selected group from the Glee Club and Concert Band of the college. The members of the ensem ble are Donys Kaye Holtzclaw, Alice Kissiah, Alice Knowles, Bonnie Merrill, Debbie van Sciver, Kathy Yokley, Geneal Wade. Penny Taylor, Bob Fish er, John Hurst, David Jennings, Alan Lathan, Terry McMahon, Ben Ramsaur, Fred Sharkey, Jimmy Thames, Harry Watkins, Mike Willis, George Gunza, John Hoppe, Bob Davenport, Nick Prout, John Wayant, Ed die Rousseau, and Lynn Price. Miss Harriet Herring, pianist, presented a program for the Kiwanis Club ladies’ night banquet held at the Bre vard - Davidson River Presby terian Church in Brevard last Thursday night. February 20. Over this past weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Whatley attend ed the Sixth Annual Symposium of Contemporary Music for Brass in Atlanta, Georgia. It is sponsored by the Georgia State College Music Depart ment and all the music is per formed by their faculty and students. Two of the 1968 grad uates from Brevard College Miss Peggy Killian and Mr. Charles Vernon are presently enrolled at Georgia State. Mr. Whatley’s piece “sonata for Tuba and Piano” was given its first performance on Sat urday morning, February 22. On Monday night, February 24, the program for the Bre vard Music Lovers’ Club was presented by Mr. Nelson Adams. It was on the mix - up in the church in the areas of liturgy and hymnody. Romeo and Juliet Revealed To College Group Approximately fifty mem bers of the Brevard College community had a glimpse of another era and gained insight into their own time period Tuesday night. Ten percent of the student body traveled to Asheville’s Terrace Theatre to see the Fellinis production of Romeo and Juliet, even thou^ no one was required to go or received extra credit. The trip was organized and sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Owen of the Departnaent of English, and was helped by Mr. Ray Fisher, Department of So cial Sciences, who drove the bus. Other faculty members and students helped by providing their automobiles to take the oversow crowd. College people who had read the play, seen other produc tions, and a few who had taught the play were caught up in the excitement of Shakespeare^ os# of emotions. One student con fessed that she held her breath during the last scenes; sh« wanted desperately for Juliet to awaken in time to save her lover. Later the same student realized that she had seen the movie just a month ago. As the group returned to cars and the “Blue Goose” to return to campus, one question was heard many times: “Why don’t we do this more often?” ABG Presents Career Night Alpha Beta Gamma held its third annual Career Night last Thursday evening in the cafe teria. Approximately fifty students met with sixteen scientists and instructors of science, repres enting fields of psychology, mathematics, veterinary medi cine, and physical therapy, from Greenville, Asheville, and surrounding areas. Students discussed their fields of interest with the pro fessional that represented that field. Each student garnered much from his brief encounter with professionalism. Miss Bobbie Jean Nicholson is the sponsor of Alpha Beta Gamma.
