Number 6
Jack And Sally Jenkins To Appear
The Mutual Concert Associa
tion opens its fall season in co
operation with the Lyceum
series at Brevard College on
this coming Saturday evening,
October 17, at 8:15 at Dunham
Auditorium. The ope*ing at
traction is JACK AND SALLY
JENKINS, two talented voca
lists who perform with a back
up group of three instrumen
talists.
One of the most popular col
legiate attractions today, Jack
and Sally offer a two-hour con
cert, displaying extraordinary
versatility. Accompanied by
their instrumental trio, they
perform many styles of music.
Medleys from Broadway musi
cals, folk songs, country west
ern, currently popular ballads,
and original satirical material
based on topical themes are all
uniquely presented.
Jack and Sally have perform
ed on many nationally broad
cast television shows including
the Ed Sullivan Show. The tal
ented singers were discovered
by Guy Lombardo. When he
saw them perform in Chicago,
he was so impressed with their
talents that he booked them on
a year-long national concert
tour. Aside from the many ex
citing musical arrangements
within their concert, there is
a great deal of theater. Their
entire production is staged and
choreographed. They also uti
lize clever lighting and mag
nificent costuming.
They have performed in ev
ery major supper club in North
and South America. Highlights
for them during recent seasona
have been numerous. Recent
ly, they were chosen to per
form for eight weeks during
the grand opening of Howard
Hughes’ new Frontier Hotel in
Las Vegas. They hold the rec
ord for return engagements at
the world famous Fontaine
bleau Hotel in Miami Beach.
Even with all the glamor at
tached to a supper club open
ing, Jack and Sally prefer the
college concert. For them the
most rewarding performances
are those before college audi
ences.
The appearance of Jack and
Sally, as well as all other ly-
ceum programs, are paid for
with part of the general fee,
paid by all students. Therefore,
students may, with no addition
al charge, pick up their tick
ets in the music office between
4:00 and 8:00. Four hundred
tickets will be available.

Academic Skills Lab Is A
Valuable Aid To B.C. Students Fall Vacation
Begins Oct. 21
Former B.C. Teacher Dies
Miss Dulcie Hayes, former
language teacher at Brevard
College died in her home town,
Ogden, Illinois, October 9,
1970.
Miss Hayes came to Brevard
College in 1934 and taught
French and Spanish until her
retirement in 1959.
During her long and success
ful teaching career, she held
only three positions: Louisburg
College for two years, Weaver
College for eight years, and
Brevard College for twenty-
five years.
Along with her teaching dut
ties at Brevard College \Miss
Hayes frequently served as dean
of women, chaperon, nurse, and
confidante to the students, who
always felt free to share their
joys and sorrows with her. She
was never too busy to give stud
ents ext»a help. It was not un
common to find students study
ing in her home any night of
tiie week. Believing in the axiom
tliat a teacher hasn’t taught un
til the student has learned,
Miss Hayes was determined
that her students would learn.
Her salary was never too
modest to have enough money
to pay the initiation fee into
an honor society for a financial
ly handicapped student. This
Eift was usually anonymous,
for she didn’t want the student
to feel indebted to her.
Miss Hayes’ dedication was
such that the worth of the in
dividual was important. Be
cause of this feeling, she always
looked for and found the good
qualities; consequently, stud-
6uts who were academic or dis
ciplinary problems usually be
came worthwhile citizens and
®ade distinct contributions to
society.
She always found time in
her busy schedule for scholas
tic improvement. For many
years she was a member of
Delta Kappa Gamma, an Inter
national Society for Key Wo
men Teachers; Business and
Professional Women’s Club;
North Carolina Teachers’ i^so-
ciation; sponsor for Sigma
Pi Alpha, the honorary lang
uage fraternity at Brevard Col
lege. She was also a member of
the Eastern Star, American
Association of University Wo
men, and an active member of
the Brevard Methodist Church.
Regardless of the organization
or the activities undertaken,
she was always a willing work
er and a proud representative.
In October, 1957, the Bre
vard Business and Professional
Women’s Club bestowed on
Miss Hayes “Woman of the
Year.” The entire program
was a salute to her; and in
recognition of her long and
• faithful service to the club,
she was presented with a life
time membership.
Retirement for Miss Hayes
meant both hapfiiness and sad
ness — happiness because she
would return to her home and
family in Ogden, and sadness
because she was leaving North
Carolina and her many friends
here.
A friend and co-worker said
of her, “She always brings out
the best in a person.” What a
great tribute to a fine educa
tor.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. J. D.
are the proud parents of a baby
boy, Michael David, bom Sep
tember 26, 1970.
The Clarion Staff and College
Community extends Congr^u-
lations and best wishes to Mr.

Mrs. McCall is an employee
in the College Store.
The Academic Skills Lab is
designed to aid the students in
many ways. Directed by Miss
Burgess and Mrs. Whicker, the
Lab not only helps students to
increase their vocabulary but
also to improve their reading
speed and comprehension.
The three goals or purposes
of the Lab are (1) To help
the individual student gain
necessary study skills to
achieve and maintain a “C”
average here at Brevard, (2) To
improve reading ability (This
includes increased rate ef read
ing and comprehension. Stud
ents learn exactly what is in
volved in the reading process.)
(3) To discover what his mo
tivation is and thus, learn to
have confidence in himself.
The Lab is equipped with
various instruments. The Tach-
istoscope is an instrumfint
which enables the student to
learn to read phrases instead
of word for word. Cassettes are
available to the student for
tips on how to study for vari
ous subjects. The “Vocab”
series is a film strip with a
cartoon. In this cartoon a maa
pronounces a word, gives its
definition and then gives a
synonym for the word. Books
are available to the student
and can be checked out.
Tactics II sets are used not
only in reading but in English
and spelling. The main goal of
the Lab is to aid the student
in any field of academic diffi
culty. Once the student is help
ed, h» then becomes motivated.
The course was recommend
ed by the Academic Standards
and Admissions Committee, and
the contcnt was detEnnined by
the C'urriculum Committee of
the college. In the fall semestw
last vear of 80 students in the
Lab, 37 attained a »C” average
This is a far greater percent
age than that of the students
who were not in the lab. "Two
who completed the course this
summer and are now ^udent
assistants are Eddie Hash and
Buzzy Kimmins. In speed read
ing, Buzzy holds the school rec
ord so far, having attamed the
greatest number of w'ords per
minute with 80 - 100% com
prehension.
Students discover after much
practice, that comprehension
increases as their speed in
creases. They cease to dwell on
the words and find they main
tain higher interest in the
ideas the words are expressing.

Homecoming Proves A
Memorable Occasion
Homecoming was a memor
able occasion last week at
Brevard. The dormitories
were cleverly decorated with
Jones Dormitory winning the
first prize of $50.00 and Tay
lor Dormitory, second prize of
$10. The winning dorm was
decorated as a steamboat.
Brevard’s soccer team made
an otherwise rainy day quite a
bit brighter by defeating Ox
ford College 17 - 1. The high
light of Brevard College Home
coming was the crowning of
the Homecoming Queen, Miss
Jenny Lucas. The Freshman at
tendants were Miss Libby
Moody and Miss Patti Smith.
Jenny’s court consisted of Miss
Norma Distler and Caroll Wil
liams, and Carol Thenoils
as Sophomore attendants.
Brevard College will observe
fall vacation beginning with
the close of classes on Wednes
day, October 21 and ending
with the resumption of classes
on Monday, October 26. The
much needed break from the
College routine will see a mass
exodus by students to places
near and far. The fall vacation
is a new innovation this year,
and was originally intended to
take the place of the regular
Thanksgiving vacation; howr
ever, it was later decided that
it would be in the best interests
of the college community to be
able to go home for Thanksgiv
ing. The Thanksgiving vacation
will be held November 25 - 30,
followed shortly by semester
exams, which end officially on
December 18, signaling the
start of the Christmas holi
days.
SGA Holds Its
Second Meeting
The SGA held its second
meeting of the semester, Wed
nesday, Sept. 31, 1970. A de
cision was reached and pre
sented to members of the Stud
ent Governmwit Association
concerning the proposal “bare
feet in the parlor.” A response
from the Office of Student Af
fairs and Dean Ferree is as
follows: ■ „
“Any manner of lounging
without shoes in the lobbies
of Beam and Jones will con
tinue to be unacceptable In
regard to the total decorum
which the college is endeavor
ing to create.”
Committees have also been
appointed, which the SGA
members hope will create a
more incisive understanding on
campus of what SGA is all
about. Committees such as Pub
lic Relations, Handbook, Con
stitution, Election (and all oth
ers) ask your help and sup
port in helping them make this
year the greatest year in the
history of Brevard College for
the SGA.
