PAGE FOUR THE CLARION October 30, 1970 Brevard’s Soccer Team Closes Season With Tie The Brevard Booters travel ed to Chapel HUl to play the UNC Tar Babes in the seap- son’s final game. The first period saw the Tornadoes fall behind 1-0 with four minutes played; however, Curt Jerkins scored his first goal of the sea son with an assist from Dwight Shaw on a corner kick with 30 seconds remaining in the first period. The Booters, controlling the entire second period, scored with 11 minutes gone in the second period. This gave them a 2-1 half time lead. The second half found the field in desperate shape from the heavy rain during the first half and the game turned into a mud bath. UNC scored on a freak play when goalie John Henderson tried to dribble the ball out from the goal and the ball struck in the mud, John tried to kick the ball, and when the ball skimmed off a play, er’s leg, an alert UNC player kicked the ball into the goal Henderson could recover. Thus, the game ended in another hard fought tie. Coach Burch stated, “I think this was the hardest fought game of the season. The team really gave 125 percent. I was not pleased with the tie, but I don’t believe I could have ask ed for more out of one team.” When asked about the team’s performance this year, Biurch commented, “I’m a strong be liever in the mental attitude of athletes. Although we set many team records satistically, our mental attitude was very inconsistent. However, I am pleased with this team’s per formance. You have to remem- ber, I lost seven starters from last year’s squad. This is not an excuse, however.” WIN BIG TOURNEY — Dr. Walter Clayton, left, and Tommy “Tiger” Jordan, right, teamed to gether recently to win the annual Four - Ball Golf tournament at the Glen Cannon Country club. They had a record - breaking 132 total for the two rounds. Dr. Clayton is a consistent tournament winner at Glen Cannon, and Jordan is Bre vard’s College top golfing star. She will also spend considerable time in Atlanta, Georgia, which seems to beckon to the young career girl, and to Jacksonville, Florida, an area from which many of the Brevard College students come. Her itinerary also includes high schools and colleges. “Dr. Charles Schrader’s soccer team won its third straight game on a 5-2 victory over Carson - Newman, Tuesday in Jefferson City, Tennessee.” The above doesn’t make very much sense, maybe, to some students here at Brevard Col lege, but for those of us who keep up with products of Coach Larry Burch, it does. This is a write-up about a game in which Brevard College transfer stud ent, Mike Michner, made four of the five goals in that game, and was assisted on one point by another former Brevard Col lege student Ralph Lundy. Mike scored his season high thus far of four goals for WCU at this game with Carson - New man. Michner, leads the team in scoring at Western with nine goals. Mike, a Brevard College transfer from Hendersonville, and Ralph Lundy are both the products of last year’s regional and conference champs under the direction of Coach Larry Burch. We here at Brevard hope to hear more about Mike’s and Ralph’s play at WCU and wish them luck, also.
