PAGE TWO THE CLARION SEPTEMBER 30, 1975 THE CLARION October 4, 1978 30C DtKZ DttC Editorial Like Last Year’^ In the four weeks that I have been back at Brevard, I have noticed something very apparent in the at titude of the Sophomores. I too am guilty of this ob scure habit. The habit that I am referring to is that of comparing this year to last year. How many times have you said something to the affect of, “It’s not like last year.” or “He’s just like he was last year.” ? Last year is so dominant that it has become difficult for us to focus on this year. Last year is gone. The past is behind us and the future lies ahead; therefore, there is no reason to dwell on either one. The important time is NOW, because each of us is living now. Some people may say that we are coming to school to prepare for the future, but what we are learning is being stored in our brains now and can be very affective on our present lives. For instance, I’m not taking Psychology so that I will be able to relate to myself in years to come; rather, I am taking the course to relate to myself at the present. I am also sure that the Freshmen are tired of having last year thrown in their faces constantly. We all have great memories of last year and some of us wish that certain people were here again, but this year has arrived, and nothing can be “like last year.” Social Board Events October 3, Coffee House Student Union October 11 Homecoming - Featuring “Hot Smokin’Brass Band” October 31 Halloween “The Sound Machine” — HOMECOMING — The Homecoming dance will be held on October 11. Miller John Eversman Dean Haggard Commends The SUL “TERRIFIC! BEST I’VE SEEN! BEAUTIFUL! MAXIMUM PLUS!” If you happen to have heard me walking along mumbling to myself recently and couldn’t quite hear what I was saying, that is it. I have been all but overwhelmed with the start that has been made in Student Personnel Services Division and Student Affairs in general, I wish to give a special “vote of thanks” and congratulations to the officers and members of the SUL for the serious effort they have made in getting the school off to a tremendously fine beginning. We have indeed made some much needed changes in the structures for handling various campus problems, but more importantly I personally ap preciate the willingness I find among 99 per cent of the students I have encountered thus far this year to sit and discuss problems and possible solutions. I find this a much more satisfying alter native to the process I un derstand may be under con sideration elsewhere. They tell me that on some campuses it is the custom to choose sides im mediately when an issue is raised and launch accusations and counter-charges, making abundant use of the “rumor mill’, before anyone knows the facts in the case and the intentions of the opposing parties. I believe our way is much better, since this gives us much more time and energy to do some creative things that will truly benefit eachof us individually, as well as the total campus community. I hope you have had a chance to find out what the Brevard Residence Life College is doing. Herein lies one of our greatest hopes for creativity and student accomplishment for the year. I) is something of a new experiment for us and we believe that the “sky is the limit.” Danny Arm strong, resident of Taylor Residence Hall, is heading up the program, and he will assist you in launching any good idea you may have concerning a student ac tivity, individual or group oriented. We have six “classes” and interest groups going already. Danny is planning to publish a weekly report on the Brevard Residence Life College activities and opportunities. If you have a special interest or unique talent and background and you are willing to share this interest or talent, get word to Danny and get a group going. Let me also say how impressed we are with those of you who are with us for the first time. In the first place there is a big increase in the size of your class as compared with last year. It pleases us that more students are choosing Brevard. It is also true that as a class you have come with an inviable record from your Cmriculum Changes Include ‘‘29 Directed Study” FROM THE DEANS OFFICE As another year has rolled around at Brevard, with the many obvious changes such as faces and people, Brevard’s Curriculum Committee has also been making changes for the bettering of Brevard College. Dean Thurston, who works with the Curriculum Committee, has noted two major changes in the curriculum. As many students may remember, last year’s foreign language students were required to take two semesters of language in order to receive credit for any course, one or both semesters. Also, students were placed in classes according to the number of years of individual high schools. Thirdly, your attitude toward college campus life seems to be a healthy and sane one, and the report I get from the faculty is you are willing to work at the academic task. More power to you! So, this “ole bearded one” says to himself; he says; thanks to the excellent effort of the sophomore class in preparation for the new year, and the way in which the frehsman class has entered into the spirit of Brevard campus life, I would predict one of the best years the college has enjoyed in some time. language which had taken in high school. According to Dean Thurston, these stipulations have been changed. New methods are being em ployed this year to place language students. Several factors, such as a review of high school grades and ability, in terviews between foreign language faculty and students, and SAT scores help to place the student, assuring him a chance to properly utilize his background, thus giving him a chance to meet his challenge. A new opportunity for study has been introduced into each division of study. It is listed as “29 Directed Study” in the College Bulletin. This course is arranged between the student and the professor, and carries from one to four hours of credit. This course is usually opened to sophomores who have main tained high grades. The main purpose of the course is to challenge the student who has a deep interest in a certain area, and to motivate him to do outside research and work. Stan Scott and Barbara Allison, along with the Curriculum Committee, worked to obtain these improvements for the students of Brevard. We hope the Curriculum Committee and other groups will continue to work towards the improvements to assume Brevard students the finest education. Freshman Editorial Stuck In A Book^^ Homework, homework, and more homework...At times it really seems impossible. It seems that any more from the minute I’m out of bed in the morning, until I hit the sack at night, I find my nose in a book or find my pen scratching on paper. Fortunately, I find that I’m not alone. Many other Freshmen are ex periencing the same things. Every new school year I find thoughts flashing through my mind such as study, test, papers, classes, homework,..Can I make it? Every year I’m throne into a panic which frazzels my nerves and is disastrous to my work. Before coming to Brevard, I said that this year would be different. Well, it is. Along with many other Freshmen, I find myself even more terrified and panicy over the new situations. We don’t dread the classes or the work, we just get frazzeled by the amount. Other than not being used to the quantity and quality of work, everything here at Brevard seems to be great. The classes are interesting, the teachers are great and the Sophomores aren’t the big bunch of beasts we pictured them to be. Things are finally beginning to settle down and the homework is not quite as hard, thanks to our Big Sisters. So as for myself, I think College life is terrific!
