School records have been set in the 10,000 meters by Tim Black who ran 31:26.8 at the Florida Relays, while finishing 2nd in the open division of the 10,000 meters. The other school record was set by John Dennis, who jumped 487” in the triple jump against Carson Newman. Both freshmen, Tim Black and John Dennis will join sophomore David Hall, who qualified in the 5,000 meters at 14:476, for the national meet to be held in Champaign, Illinois in late May. G’boro Runner To Join Brevard Team John George, one of the top high school distance runners in the state, signed a track and cross country letter of intent with Brevard College. John George, from Page High School in Greensboro, finished second in the state cross country cham pionships, while finishing second in the state mile last spring. “John George will be a great asset to our program,” said Coach Norman Witek. He has great background in distance running, finishing second in a 13.1 road race at 72:17. In addition, John has excellent academic credentials which made his decision between Brevard and the University of North Carolina a very difficult one. The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is that it is robbing the human race. If the opinion is correct we are deprived of exchanging truth for error. If it is wrong, we lose what is almost as great a benefit, a clearer perception and lovelier interpretation produced by its collision with error. John Stuart Mill Under Myerhoff The basketball Tornados completed their fifth year under John Meyerhoff v?ith a 14-11 record and a third place finish in the WCJCC. It was the fourth straight winning season for the Brevard hoopsters. Coach John Meyerhoff ex pressed satisfaction with the season. After the graduation of an entire sophomore lineup for the ’76 - ’77 team, and the failure of 6’8” Larry Jewell and 6’5” Carson Newman Steps On BC Toes After easy victories at home against Wingate and Milligan, Brevard met its match against a strong CarsonNewman team on April 1st. The final score was Carson Newman 108, Brevard 98, Milligan 34, and Vanderbilt University 28. [Although Carson Newman expected an easy win because of its extreme advantage in the sprints and jumps, Brevard countered with Sulaynwn Njie and John Dennis to split up the points. Brevard managed to stay close by taking'the first three places in the pole vault, 440 in termediate hurdles, and 3-mile run. The top scorer for Brevard was Lamar Roberts, who ran in two relays, while placing 2nd in both of the hurdle races. During tl» course of the meet John Dennis set the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 48’7”. Although Brevard lost the meet, they came away a winner because many individuals had their best competitive race of the year. Only the hammer throw, which Carson Newman swept on the last event of the day, denied Brevard of victory. Mike Jackson to return, 1977-78 was pictured as a rebuilding year. However, the Tornados made a strong run at second place, posted a 13-7 Region X record and were extremely competitive with the best teams on the schedule. The highlight of the year was the play of freshmen Chico Horton (14.8 points per game) and Benton Wade (20.8 points per game and 12.7 reWnds). Wade was named “Player of The Year” in the WCJCC, first team “All Region X”, and finaUy “AH American”. He is Brevard’s first basketball “AH American” since Tom Barbee in 1961. Tennis Team Triumphs Brevard, N.C. — Brevard College’s men’s tennis team defeated Spartanburg Methodist 6-3 at Brevard in the WCJCC match on Wednesday, April 19. David Sneed, Albert Sneeden, Lane Parton and Steve Wilson won singles matches, while Jeff Harris and Lane Parton won at No. 3 doubles. On Friday, April 21, the Tornados dropped at 7-2 decision to Montreal Anderson on the Tornado’s home court, in a non-conference encounter. Lane Parton and Steve Wilson, at No 4 and No. 6 singles, were victorious. Currently the record stands at 2- 10. The team traveled to Atlanta on Thursday, April 27, to con clude the season. Brevard Track Team Places Second To WNC Brevard, N.C. — Brevard College kept pace with Western Carolina for 11 events but finally bowed to their depth with the final score of, Western Carolina 91, Brevard 69, Wake Forest 51, U.T. at Chattanooga 30, and Emory and Henry 29. Brevard’s distance crew, which was neutralized by Wake Forest, relied heavily on good performances from toe rest of the team. John Dennis had his greatest day with three personal best performances. In the long jump he placed 2nd with a jump of 23’0”, while shuttling back and forth from the high jump finishing 3rd with a jump of 6’6”. With a little extra time Dennis settled down to take first place in Other fine performances for Brevard were turned in by David Hall with a 4:02 1500 meters, Kevin Scott with a 14’ pole vault, Dirk Redwine with a 158.5 800 meters and Gary Burkle’s 56.4 400 meter hurdles. Brevard’s record stands at 7 wins and 2 loses. Scholarship Is Awarded To NC Native Brevard, N.C. — Mark W. Armstrong, son of the Reverend and Mrs. Mack M. Armstrong of Hudson, has been chosen as a Sims Scholar at Brevard College for the academic years 1978-79 and 1979-80. Armstrong has been awarded a full scholarship which will cover expenses for room, board, tuition, and general fees for the two years. The Sims Scholar is in honor of Mr. Allen H. Sims of Gastonia, Chairman Emeritus of the Brevard College Board of Trustees. Two full scholarships and five one thousand dollar scholarships are awarded to seven Sims Scholars. Being selected as a Sims Scholar is Brevard College’s most competitive and prestigious academic award. Armstrong is a senior at South Caldwell High School. He has received many honors during his high school years, including District President of the Beta Qub and a National Merti Scholarship semi-finalist. Brevard College takes pride in awarding the Sims Scholarship to Armstrong, as he has proven his concern for academic ex cellence. Scarborough To Take Reins Brevard, N.C. — Corky Maynor, acting Chairman of the Division of Health and Physical Education at Brevard College, has announced the appointment of Don Scarborough as Soccer the triple jump with a jump of coach and Women’s Basketball 48’8”, good enough for a new coach. He will also have school record. Brevard’s hurdle crew once again scored heavily, scoring a total of 20 points. Ricky Truitt again won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.6, while winning the 400 meter hurdles in 55.0. responsibilities in the area of Student Affairs. Soccer Federation and the National Inter-Collegiate Soccer Officials Association. He ciurently serves as president of the Western North Carolina Soccer Officials Association and has been an executive board member of the Carolina Athletic Association. At Asheville Country Day, Scarborough has compiled a soccer record of 125 wins, 52 losses and 11 ties. While coaching the men’s and women’s basketball teams, he lead the 1976 women’s team to the Carolina Athletic Association regular season and toumement championship. Soccer teams from the Asheville area have toured England and Poland under Scarborough’s direction and he will be taking a team to West Germany this summer. Scarborough is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scarborough of Clearbrook Drive, Asheville, N.C. In the Middle Ages it was against the law# to tie knots during a wedding ceremony.
