Volleyball
Reorganized
Women’s volleyball coach Gail
Anderson is very optimistic about
this year team which is the first
Brevard has had since 1974.
Brevard has a very exceptional
team this year, led by Diane
Taylor, a 5’7” freshman, who was
elected captain by her team
mates. Coach Anderson also
mentioned the great play of
Carolyn Stephens a 5’7”
sophomore from Hendersonville,
North Carolina. Molly Ar-
mistead, a 5’7” freshman and
5’2” freshman Donna Barnwell,
are .mentioned by Anderson for
their setting up of the front line
players for the most exciting play
in volleyball, the spike.
This year’s team also has an
Oriental touch with the steady
play and hustle of Misea Tanaka,
a 5’3” freshman from Tokyo,
Japan. Karen Storie, a 5’7”
sophomore from Lenoir, North
Carolina was noted by Anderson
for her hustle and outstanding
spirit for the game.
Coach Anderson hopes that this
team can gel before the regional
playoffs in November.

A Winning Tradition

since 1960. During the 1976-77 academic year the team posted
a 22-5 record, the best in the school’s recent history, and in
1977-78 a Brevard player was named most valuable in the
conference and honorable mention All-American. In golf, the
Brevard team was ranked third in the conference in both
1975-76 and 1976-77. The soccer team has dominated regional
play since 1969, and in 1972 the team was ranked eleventh in
the nation. In cross country and track, Brevard has won all
Region X championship meets since 1969, and the cross
country team in 1977-78 went undefeated for the second
straight year. In 1977-78, Brevard had one All-American in
cross country and two in track. Presently, tennis is being
developed at the intercollegiate level.
Intercollegiate sports designed especially for women are
basketball, volleyball and tennis, and women occasionally
participate on other teams including cross country, track,
golf and soccer. During the 1976-77 season, the women’s
basketball team finished with an 11-7 record, second in the
state, and third in the state tournament. Some of the players
achieved top scoring in the state, with two individuals
making All-Division A winning Athletic program is very
important at Brevard. It gives the students something to be
proud of and the athletes extra incentive, a good com
bination.
