Page 4 theclarion OCTOBER 17,19^ Cross Country Still Undefeated The Brevard Harriers ran in the Clemson Invitational meet in Clemson, S.C. on September 31st. The Tornadoes, who were the only Junior College team entered in the event, placed one runner in the top twenty, John Wentworth, who finished 13th. On Saturday, October 7th, Brevard hosted the Catamounts from Western Carolina and the University of Tennessee “B” Team. And the Tornadoes came away with a convincing victory over these two squads. John Wenthworth finished first for Brevard with a time of 25:32 over the five mile course. John George, also from Brevard finished second with a time of 25:40. The Tornadoes overall record now stands at 6-0. Volleyball Reorganized Women’s volleyball coach Gail Anderson is very optimistic about this year team which is the first Brevard has had since 1974. Brevard has a very exceptional team this year, led by Diane Taylor, a 5’7” freshman, who was elected captain by her team mates. Coach Anderson also mentioned the great play of Carolyn Stephens a 5’7” sophomore from Hendersonville, North Carolina. Molly Ar- mistead, a 5’7” freshman and 5’2” freshman Donna Barnwell, are .mentioned by Anderson for their setting up of the front line players for the most exciting play in volleyball, the spike. This year’s team also has an Oriental touch with the steady play and hustle of Misea Tanaka, a 5’3” freshman from Tokyo, Japan. Karen Storie, a 5’7” sophomore from Lenoir, North Carolina was noted by Anderson for her hustle and outstanding spirit for the game. Coach Anderson hopes that this team can gel before the regional playoffs in November. Cheerleaders Selected The Cheerleaders for the year 1978-79 have been selected and are as follows: Jane Vocelle, who is the captain of this year’s squad and Diane Hickey, the Co- Captain, lead the other cheerleaders who are Pam Coan, Diana Ereth, Debbie Minick, Dawn Mullins, Cathy Date and Julie Osborne. This is the first year Brevard College has had male cheerleaders. In all sports. Brevard College has had 30 All-Americans, with three of these honors being recorded during the 1977-78 school year. Intercollegiate programs designed especially for men are basketball, cross country, track, soccer, golf and tennis. The men’s basketball team has won four WCJCC Championships since 1960. During the 1976-77 academic year the team posted a 22-5 record, the best in the school’s recent history, and in 1977-78 a Brevard player was named most valuable in the conference and honorable mention All-American. In golf, the Brevard team was ranked third in the conference in both 1975-76 and 1976-77. The soccer team has dominated regional play since 1969, and in 1972 the team was ranked eleventh in the nation. In cross country and track, Brevard has won all Region X championship meets since 1969, and the cross country team in 1977-78 went undefeated for the second straight year. In 1977-78, Brevard had one All-American in cross country and two in track. Presently, tennis is being developed at the intercollegiate level. Intercollegiate sports designed especially for women are basketball, volleyball and tennis, and women occasionally participate on other teams including cross country, track, golf and soccer. During the 1976-77 season, the women’s basketball team finished with an 11-7 record, second in the state, and third in the state tournament. Some of the players achieved top scoring in the state, with two individuals making All-Division A winning Athletic program is very important at Brevard. Volleyball Report The Women’s Volleyball team, the first organized team since 1974, opened the season against Spartanburg on a losing note as they lost the dual match by the score of 3-1 in the best of five game set. Friday, October 6th, the Lady Tornadoes travelled to Louisburg to play Louisburg College. Brevard faced the team who last year finished seventh in the NJCAA National Playoffs and one which has several All- Americans on this year’s squad. The result was a 2-0, 2-0 defeat in two best of five matches. Even in defeat, Brevard played an out standing match. Saturday, October 7th, the Lady Tornadoes played Peace College in Raleigh. The score was 3-0 with Brevard losing in the best of five game match. On October 10th, the Lady Tornadoes hosted Montreat-Anderson and Spar tanburg College in a three team round robin match. The result was a split of the two matches; the Lady Tornadoes defeated Montreat-Anderson 2-1 for their first win of the season and a 2-0 loss to Spartanburg in the best of three game matches. Steve Schneider scored one goal and assisted Nino Dieppa on another to lead Brevard to victory. On Tuesday, October 3rd, the Tor nadoes travelled down Interstae 40, to take on the Cavaliers of Montreat-Anderson Junior College in Mon treat, and Brevard came away with a 5-2 win. The Tornadoes, who earlier in the season defeated the Cavs by the score of 8-0, outshot Montreal 36- 15 and got balanced scoring from five players, Andy Dickinson, Jeff Loflin, Steve Schneider, Mark Lee and Rob Ottley. Saturday, October 7th, the Tornadoes went to Georgia to play against DeKalb Community College-Central, and Brevard departed on the short end of a 3-1 score. Mario Muniz scored the lone goal for the Tornadoes, who lost the match even though they outshot DeKalb-Central 16-15. On October 10th, Brevard played host to DeKalb Com munity College-South and was defeated by the score of 3-0. DeKalb-South outshot the Tor nadoes 16-12. The Tornadoes’ Steve Schneider was injured in the first period of action and that lessened the Brevard squad’s chance of winning the match. The Tornadoes’ overall record now stands at 5-4-0.
