Volume 46 THE CLARION THE VOICE OF BREVARD COLLEGE STUDENTS Friday, November 3,1978 No. 4 Melody Holmes dances the role of Susan the Silent. Miner Brevard News In Brief A great time is planned for the second annual Parent’s Weekend here November 3, 4, and 5, 1978. Brevard College would like to see Parent’s Weekend become an annual event, since last years proved very successful. The purpose of this weekend is to see what their sons and daughters are doing, and for the parents to get a full view of the campus. According to Brevard College President Jacob Mar tinson, “This is the best student body in seven years. ’' One message to the students — Be yourselves . Parents’ Weekend is designed for the parents to see the students as they are every day. Parents see Brevard College as a worthwhile enterprise, but students may take a lot of things for granted, and not realize the sacrifice that has been made to send them to college. So be ap preciative to your parents. A schedule of weekend events follows: FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 3 Brevard College visitation days have uned up, preparing to in troduce prospective students and their parents to the campus, residence halls, classrooms, labs, and the James Addison Jones Library. Once a month (except December), scheduled visitation programs are held from 10 a.m. to 1;00 p.m. in the McCarty- Goodson Classroom Building. These programs will answer any questions about admission procedures, financial aid, scholarships and curriculum. The prospective students are then taken on a tour of the campus and invited to stay for lunch. Student ambassadors along with the members of admissions office help show students and parents around. They encourage college visitation, “because it is the best and fairest way for you to make a decision that will signifigantly affect your future. 7:0Oa.m,-9:00a.m. 8:00a.m.-2:30p.m. 11:00a.m.-i:i5p,m, 1:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. 4:30p,m 8:15p.m. ■6:30p.n Breakfast in the A. This Week The next event in Brevard’s Cultural Life Series is pianist Cecile Lkad who will perform on Tuesday, November 7. Miss Licad is a seventeen year old musician from the Phillipines who has won numerous prizes for her talent. On Thursday, November 16, a program of Spanish music and dance — Flameco Ole’ — will bring its four brilliant artists to our stage. Cultural Life events start at 8; 15 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium. “In the face of great obstacles, it’s pulled together very nicely.” Sam Cope, director of Brevard College’s fall production “Finian’s Rainbow” is elated with the musical. “We’ve had our difficulties”. Cope admits, “for example, we probably have the world’s only portable elevated orchestra pit. It’s been a challenge, but I’m happy with it. The freshmen involved have proven to possess a great deal of promise and ability and I’m just pleased with the entire play.” Fantasy, reality, Irish folklore and romance are ingredients which have made Finian’s Rainbow one of the big musical successes of recent years. The Brevard College Division of Fine Arts is presenting this big, lively, colorful, sentimental musical in Dunham Auditorium on Nov. 2, 3, 4, with curtain at 8:15 p.m. Finian McLonergan “borrows” a crock of magical gold (gold for three wishes in the hands of a mortal) from an Irish Leprechaun and brings the gold and his beautiful daughter Sharon to Rainbow Valley in the state of Missitucky, U. S. A., in order to verify his theory as to how all Americans become millionaires. (They all are, you know!) According to Rnian, a magical something in the soil of Fort Knox causes wondrous things to happen, and financial good fortune to befall any man who plants a bit of gold near Ford Knox. So Finian plants his gold and begins to anticipate the happy results. Unfortunately Finian doesn’t anticipate all of the events which occur: Sharon falls in love with a local boy, Woody Mahoney; Senator Bllboard Rawkins has designs on Finian’s land; and the Leprechaun tries to recover his gold before all the wishes are used. Og, the Leprehchaun, predicts that fairy gold can only bring “gloom and doom, doom and gloom” in the hands of a mortal, and for a time it looks as if his predictions will come true. But everything finally ends well, as it only can when you combine in one musical a loveable old Irish rogue; his spirited and beautiful daughter; a handsome young idealist; a beautiful young girl who can’t talk with her tongue, but talks with her feet; and Irish Leprechaun (is there any other kind?); a magical pot of gold, a bigoted southern senator; a gospel quartet; Mr. Shears and Mr. Robust, owner of a mail-order business; and various individuals of Rainbow Valley! All seats are reserved for these performances. Tickets are available in the Box Office in the Beam Administration Building from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may also reserve seats by mailing your check and the ap propriate completed reservation form to Musical Theatre, Box 649, Brevard College, Brevard, N. C. 28712. Security Offers Helpful Suggestions Have you received a traffic ticket? If so, have you paid your fine? As stated on each violation notice (ticket) “This fine is payable to the College Financial Affairs Office within five days.” There are currently over forty tickets overdue. Dean Houk and director of Security Richard O’Hara are prepared to take strong immediate measures to collect these overdue fines. Some students are, however, cooperating with security by “seeking visitor passes” for visiting friends, registering new vehicles or notifying security of automobiles no longer used on campus. “This is a giant step in the right direction,” said officer O’Hara. “Thank you.” Since many students at Brevard enjoy hunting, guns have found their way on campus. “We now have about twelve weapons registered on campus and secured. The procedure for registering your weapons is relatively simple,” stated O’Hara. “You must bring the weapon into our office, complete a simple form, and the weapon will be placed under lock and key. When you need it, give security some advanced notice and an office will sign it out to you. When you return to campus, you must also return the weapon to security.” This is the only safe way to secure guns on campus. Alcohol is also still a problem on campus. Any complaints of alchohol use will be forwarded to Dean Houk. Occasionally the officer may recommend a “verbal warning,” but the final decision still remains with Dean Houk. Repeat offenders are subject to probation or dismissal from school.
