Cross Country Ranked Sixth

Brevard, N.C. — On Oct. 21st,
Brevard College captured a 22
team Dupage Invitational meet
held in Glen Ellyn, 111. Teams
from Kansas, Illinois, Michigan,
Missouri, Wis5bnsin, Indiana and
North Carolina were represen
ted. Brevard won the team title
with 62 points followed by
Macomb yyiich.) 85, Jackson
(Mich.) 88,' Wright (111.) 88, and
Haskell (Kansas) 115, rounding
out the top five teams.
Brevard’s Jeff Wentworth ran
a very fine competitive race
staying with the front pack most
of the way, finishing only 14
seconds behind the leader in 4th
place. John George ran well for
Brevard finishing in 10th place,
followed closely by Tim Black in
12th place. Tim Black, last year’s
All-American, is hopefully
regaining some of his strength,
after being sideUned with a virus
infection, most of the season.
Greg Boyd who is vastly im
proving, finished in 14th place
with a very strong 3 miles, after
being boxed in for nearly 2 miles.
Brevard’s other scorers, Todd
Murphy finished 22nd, to give
Brevard the title. Both Charles
Fisher 52nd and John Traynor
57th, were off their usual pace
due to the after effects of the flu.
“Everyone ran a very com
petitive race, knowing they must
do so in order to win the meet,”
said Coach Norm Witek. “It was
a very satisfying victory.”
The Tornadoes Harriers’
travelled to Bristol, Tennessee,
on October 28th, for a triangular
meet with King College and
Vanderbilt University, and
Brevard was victorious over
these two squads, defeating King
45-21, and Vanderbilt by the same
score.
The Tornadoes’ Jeff Wentworth
set a new course record 27:11
over the 5.1 mile layout. John
George finished third for Brevard
with 27; 46. The Tornadoes overall
record is now 8-0 and they are
ranked 6th in the nation, among
junior colleges. The next meet for
Bevard is the Region X meet.
But, the only thing that the
Tornadoes have in sight is the
National meet, held on November
11th, in Champaign, Illinois.

Celebrates Win
The Brevard College Tor
nadoes celebrated homecoming
with a 10-1 victory over Abraham
Baldwin Agricultural College,
Saturday October 14th. Hassan
Regimand delighted the
homecoming crowd by scoring
four goals and assisting on two
others for Brevard. Steve
Schneider, tallied two scores for
the Tornadoes, who also got one
goal each from John McHugh,
Jeff Loflin, Rob Ottley and
Jimmy Tyson.
Thursday, October 26th,
Brevard played host to DeKalb
Community College-Central. The
Tornadoes came away with a
hard fought 4-2 ovetime win over
the Georgians. Brevard got one
goal apiece from Steve
Schneider , Hassan Regimand,
Andy Dickinson and John
McHugh. This victory lifted the
Tornadoes record to 7-4-0.
October 28th, Brevard took to
the road to take on Oxford
College in Georgia and the
Tornadoes returned home on the
short end of a 3-2 score.
Brevard’s goals were scored by
John McHugh and Steve
Schneider. The Tornadoes, who
were outshot 26-14, dropped their
overall record, to 7-5-0.
John Meyerhoff’s basketball
Tornados got their first taste of
intercollegiate basketball for
1978- 79, “Bulldog style". The
Tornados travelled to Boiling
Springs for workouts Oct. 17th
and 18th and found out why the
Gardner Webb Bulldogs are
pereninal powers.
“We went in there in awe of the
place”, said the Tornado mentor,
“and they really wofe us out
physically. They are bigger and
stronger, starting a front line
which measures 6’10”, 6’8” and
6’6” and we. played the lambs role
Tuesday night.”
During the first evening of
scrimmage, the Bulldogs and
Tornados played four 15 minute
periods. Gardner Webb won each
of the first three periods by
margins of 13, 1 and 9 points and
the Tornados won only the last
when only freshmen played.
Benton Wade and Larry Jewell
gave an impressive performance
for the Tornados and outplayed
their counterparts. However,
Lewis Young, a 6’6” G-W senior
forward, wore out the nets and
proved to be the difference.
On Wed. afternoon, the Tor
nados decided they could play
with the Bulldogs. With the
varsity teams playing against
each other, Brevard defeated
Gardner Webb in each of the first
two periods.
On October 23rd, Brevard
travelled to Hickory to scrim
mage the Lenior-Rhyne Bears
and the Tornado hoopsters came
away with convincing wins in
each of the twenty minute
periods. The Bears, who are
usually powers in District 26 of
the NAIA are in the midst of a
rebuilding season under new
coach Neil Hodges proved to be
no match for Ihe Tornadoes. The
Brevard front line composed of
6’8” Benton Wade, 6’9” Larry
Jewell and 6'2” James McCleave
dominated play under the boards,
October 27 and 28, the Tor
nadoes scrimmaged the always
tough Blue Hose of Presbyterian
College at Boshamer Gym
nasium. In the first scrimmage
on Friday night, Presbyterian
defeated Brevard in two of three
twenty minute periods, by
margins of 1, and 13, while the
Tornadoes won the last period by
19 points. Exceptional per
formances were turned in by
point guard Kevin Herron and
guard Brian Hprton. On Saturday
morning Brevard turned the
tables on the Blue Hose with
victories of 14 points in two
twenty minute periods, while
Presbyterian won one by a
margin of 5 points.
The Tornado Cagers will be
officially introduced to the
community on November 4th
when they play the annual Blue-
White game in Boshamer
Gymnasium during the second
annual parents weekend.
“I was extremely pleased with
our improvement”, said
Meyerhoff. “Needless to say, the
Tornados impressed at lot of
people. In the afternoon scrim
mages, we didn't play Benton
Wade due to a slight knee injury
the night before. 6’8*/2” Larry
Jewell and 6’7” Moose Tim-
berlake just did a fantastic job.
Scott Harper a 6’3” guard and
point guard Kevin Herron also
played extremely well”.
