THE CLARION
Cagers Open Season
The Brevard Tornados opened
their 1978-79 season with an
impressive 89-74 victory over the
Bulldogs of Rutledge Business
College in Spartanburg on
Monday, November 13. Pivotman
Larry Jewell led the way for the
Tornados with 24 points. Scott
Harper tallied 21 for Brevard,
who outmuscled the smaller
Bulldogs, whose tallest player
was 6’3”. This was the main
factor in the outcome of the
contest.
The Tornados opened their
home season in the second game
of the annual Tip-Off Invitational
tournament, with a 83-74 triumph
over the Mars Hill Junior Varsity
squad. Brevard was paced by All-
American Benton Wade with 24
points and captain Brian Horton
hit for 23 points. The Lions were
no match for the inside strength
of the tall and talented Tornados.
In the other first round game of
the tournament, the UNC-A
Junior Varsity humbled the
Cavaliers of Montreat-Anderson,
106-82.
The matchup for the cham
pionship pitted the Tornados
against the defending tour
nament champion Bulldogs. The
result was a heart stopping 69-68
victory for the team from the
“land of the sky”. The game was
very much in doubt until the final
seconds, when 6’9” Ross
Farrington hit a jumper with five
seconds to play to give the
Bulldogs a one point lead. The
Tornados had one last chance for
victory, but Nolan Jones’
desperation shot, which hit the
front of the rim, deprived
Brevard of victory. Ross
Farrington, who scored 52 points
in the tournament, was named
MVP of the tournament.
Brevard’s Benton Wade and
Brian Horton were named to the
all-tournament team, along with
Mitchell from UNC-A and Toby
Winfield of Mars Hill.
Brevard rebounded from the
disappointing loss to UNC-A, with
a 105-73 rout of Rutledge. David
Harper came off the bench to
score 19 points for Brevard and
Brian Horton added 17. Rutledge,
as in its first game against
Brevard, was no match for the
superior strength and rebounding
power of the Tornados.
Tuesday, November 28, saw the
Brevard hoopsters travel to
Asheville to tackle Asheville-
Buncombe Tech. The Tornados
came away with a 108-66 victory
over the previously undefeated
Atomics. The big story was
Captain Brian Horton, who shot
15-15 from the field for 30 points.
Thursday, November 30, the
always tough Anderson Trojans
came to Boshamer gymnasium to
take on the Tornados. Anderson
returned home with a 105-91
victory over Brevard. The
Trojans, who last year finished
fourth in the nation with a 27-7
record and are the defending
titlist of the WCJCC for the eight
straight year, were led by 6’8”
pivotman Tim Carr who tallied 22
points, and by Aaron Douglas
with 21 points. The contest was
close in the early minutes with
the score tied at 23-all. Anderson
then ran off ten straight points
and the outcome was never in
doubt. Anderson led at halftime
55-39. Brevard cut the lead to nine
points with eight minutes to play,
but they were unable to get any
closer. The Tornados were led by
Benton Wade’s 32 points and
Brian Horton’s 16. Brevard,
whose title hopes were given a
marginal jolt even though it’s
early in the season, fell to 4-2
overall and 0-1 in the conference.
December 2nd, the Tornados
hosted Wilkes Community
College and defeated the visiting
Cougars, 71-39. “Moose” Tim-
berlake led Brevard with 16
points. The Tornados, who were
too powerful for the Cougars
under the boards, were playing
without Benton Wade, who has an
injured heel. Brevard’s overall
record now stands at 5-2 overall.
LOST AND FOUND
Students, faculty, and
staff members who find
articles anywhere on
campus should turn them
in to Nan Hall in Room 101
of McClarty-Goodson. If
you are missing books,
clothing, or other items
check with Mrs. Hall.
Note: A word from
President Martinson that
Christmas is really here.
Martinson reports sighting a
good sized doe in his yard
(maybe the mother of our
other deer which was sighted
on campus?). Martinson tells
us that the deer did indeed
have a red nose!

Lady Tornadoes
Drop Opening Games
The 1978-79 edition of the
Lady Tornados cagers
opened their season at
home Thursday, November
30, against the always
powerful Trojans of An
derson College, and came
away with a disappointing
101-48 defeat. The Trojans
controlled the tempo of the
first half which saw An
derson jump out to a 47-28
lead over the smaller
Tornados. Brevard never
could get on track in the
second half as the Trojans
outscored the Tornados, 54-
20 to seal the outcome for
the more experienced
Anderson squad. Coach
Don Scarbourough who
was unsuccessful in his
coaching debut for the
Tornados, commented that
his team “lacked the ex
perience needed to defeat a
club like Anderson and we
were outsized by them.”
He also said that “Brevard
made mistakes which need
and hopefully will be
corrected by the Louisburg
game on the First of
December”. Donna Clark
tallied 14 points for the
Tornados, and Donna
Barnwell added 8 points in
the losing cause.
The mistakes of which
Scarborough mentioned
must not have been
corrected as Brevard fell to
Louisburg, 95-37. As in the
Anderson contest, Brevard
was outsized and was less
experienced than the
Louisburg squad. And that
was the difference in the
outcome of the contest.
Carolyn Stephens led the
Tornado scoring with 18
points. Even though the
Lady Tornados lost both
games, they still have
shown a lot of enthusiasm
and determination, a good
combination for a
productive and successful
season.
The Brevard Overall
record in Region X, of the
NJCAA. now rests at 0-2.
