‘Fifties Fever’ Hits Brevard
Brevard College students took
a step back into the 50’s Wed
nesday, January 31. The ladies
dressed in bobbie socks and the
men used Vitalis to grease their
hair back. Ponytails, skirts,
saddle oxfords, cardigans,
leather jackets and white socks
were the order of the day.
The 50’s dance, sponsored by
the Masquers Club, was held in
Dunham Auditorium. Karen
McCall, president of the club said

students a chance to look back
into the 50’s scene.
Students participated in a dress

holding her favorite teddy bear,
and Dennis Webb and Vince

PTK Lands
Victory In
Convention
“FLY HIGH WITH DELTA
PI.”
This slogan along with kazoos,
toy airplanes, “tons” of posters,
and thirteen loud campaigners
landed Brevard College’s
Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa as
the president of the Carolina
region for 1979-80.
The victory followed a fun-
filled weekend of hard cam
paigning at the regional con
vention, February 2-4, in
Greenwood, South Carolina. The
campaign speech was
highlighted by an impressive
slide show with scenic pictures of
the inountains and the campus,
which was interrupted by several
“humorous” commercials.
The group also received the
award for the “Best Chapter
Song.” Written by Karen McCall,
the song was a delightful
presentation combining voices,
flutes, kicks, piano and campaign
kazoos. The song was Delta Pi’s
rendition of “Nothing Can Be
By Scott Singletary
Finer Than To Be a Delta Pi-er. ”
It was also announced that
freshman Donna Harriger, who
was campaign chairman, will vie
for the office of National
president at the National con
vention in Kansas City, Missouri
April 8-10. The chapter is
devoting much of its time to
laying the groundwork for
Donna’s upcoming campaign.
Those attending the convention
were Karen McCall, Tim Gunter,
Margaret Gosnell, Mitsuyuki
Yamanaka, David Roberts, Kim
Pack, Joan Meadows, Misae
Tanaka, Rita McNeely, Donna
Harriger, Diana Ereth, Cyndi
Blalock and Mike Sanchez. Also
attending were the sponsors,
Mrs. Sara Beard, who is a
regional advisor, Mr. Gene
McDowell and Mr. Claude
Stulting.
After their victory. Delta Pi
will certainly be “flying high” all
the way to Kansas City.
Student Fines
Fund Improvements
By Debbie Willenborg
Now that the new semester has
begun the students at B. C. are
faced with that ever present
thorn in the side...FINES. One of
the most frequent question asked
during this “fine” time is,
‘ ‘where does it all go? ”
I decided that the best place to
start to find the answer to this
question would be with Dean
Houk. She then gave me a very
informative explanation of the
system.
When a student pays a fine, the
money is divided in half. One half
of the money goes to the student
loan fund and the other goes for
dorm improvements.
The student loans are
distributed to students who apply
for them for personal
emergencies or simply for a
weekend trip. The time at which
the loan must be paid back is
decided by Dean Houk and the
student.
Dorm improvements includec
the “luxuries” that a dorm
receives. An example of the
improvements is the ice machine
in East Beam.
Both of these programs were
set up for the benefits of the
students. Dean Houk also ex
pressed that she hoped next year
it could be set up on a 70-30 basis
in which 70% would go foi^dorm
improvements.
