Tuesday, February 27,1979 THE CLARION Page 4 Tornados Clinch WCJCC Title By Tim McGuire Superb rebounding combined with superior overall guard play resulted in a 92-89 triumph for the Tornados over conference nemesis Anderson College. This victory coupled with a 97-94 overtime conquest of North Greenville vaulted the Brevard cagers to the regular season title of the WCJCC. These victories sends Brevard to the NJCAA Region X basketball tournament in Rocky Mount, Virginia. The winner of that tournament will advance to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA national championship basketball tournament. The North Greenville contest was close throughout until in overtime the Tornados broke it open outscoring the mounties 12 to 9 to gain the victory. All- American Benton Wade led Brevard with 25 points. Brian Horton and Bobby Summers each chipped in with 20 points apiece. Summers also had a game high 12 assists. The Anderson-Brevard match up was nip and tuck throughout with the Trojans taking a 47-42 lead at the half. But the Tornados, who defeated Anderson just eight days earlier 102-94, outscored the traditional juco powerhouse 18-8 in the first eight minutes of the second half, to take a 60-53 lead. Then the Trojans caught Brevard and actually led 71-70 with seven minutes to play. But the Tor nados took the lead for good on two Brian Horton free throws to give Brevard a lead it never relinquished. Benton Wade again led the Tornados with 25. He was followed by Brian Horton who tallied 18 points. I Sports line ACC Tournament Preview BENTON WADE goes to the hoop as the Brevard Tornados defeat Anderson to win the WCJCC title. Grenier Thinclads Perform Well By John George The track team completed their indoor season with some fine performances in the North Carolina State Invitational Track Meet held in Raleigh. Freshman Jeff Wentworth turned in the best performance of the season as he slithered his way through the pack and tied for first in the three mile. His time was 14:30.6 and it was good enough to qualify him for the National Indoor Junior College Track Meet held in Missouri. Jeff stayed right behind the leaders for the first two miles, and then he made a move that eliminated everyone, but Woods of Furman. They fought it out all the way, and they came across deadlocked for print. Mike Shell also qualified for the nationals by triple jumping 46’4”. He claimed fifth place overall in the meet. Freshman John George placed sixth in the two mile with a time of 9:33.6. Todd Murphy ran well in the mile and finished" with a time of 4:31.7. A mile relay consisting of George Fox, Rob Craig, Lamar Roberts and Dirk Redwine, were very competitive and turned in a good time. The team now has a break until the meet with Milligan which is here on March 14. Dunham, 8p.m., Sunday, March 11 by Bobby Hayes Well folks, the madness is n. C. Girls Face Challenge By Alan Baker The Lady Tornados go into the WCJCC tournament with a 4-13 record. The women’s basketball team will be playing in the conference tournament Friday night at Spartanburg against Anderson College, top seeded in the conference and ranked 20th in the nation. The Lady Tornados are in good physical condition and have been working hard for the upcoming tournament. The team likes to use the full-court press most of the game. Coach Don Scar borough will use the same starting lineup that has been used throughout the regular season; Donna Clarke, Carolyn Stephens, Donna Barnwell, Joyce Whit mire, and Tammy Dickens. Coach Scarbrough says “It’s been along season, but the girls have hung in there, and stuck it out.” “We haven’t had many injuries because’ the girls have stayed in such good condition, so we should be ready for the tournament.” tournament to the aliens (people who have never seen the ACC Tournament). Wake Forest can also be ruled out sjmply because they are too inexperienced and lack the talent that the other teams have. However, don’t be surprised to see the Deacons become a factor in 1977. Promoters were calling Bobick the “Great White Hope”. Norton didn’t seem too awed of the title; he knocked Bobick out in the first round. Now we have the Tate-Bobick fiasco. Both of these fights were shown on national television. It seems to me that Duane Bobick’s new nickname could be the “Great White Dope”.
