Sam Lewis Named
New Cager Coach
Sam Lewis, a highly successful
coach at Westover Senior High
School in Fayetteville, N. C. will
assume the reins as men’s
basketball coach at Brevard
College. The announcement
follows weeks of screening an
exceptional number of highly
qualified candidates. The
Chairman of the search com
mittee was Mathematics
Professor Rachel Daniels vho is
also a member of the college’s
athletic committee. Other
committee members included
Dr. Jacob C. Martinson, Jr.,
President of the College, Dr.
Morris G. Wray, Dean of the
College and Corky Maynor,
athletic director.
Lewis’s teams have won four
conference championships
during his eight years of high
school coaching, all in North
Carolina. This year’s team ad
vanced to the state 4A tour
nament before losing in a close
game to Greensboro Page the
state champions. The 29-year-old
native of Burlington is a graduate
of Wake Forest University,
where he was a Dean’s List
student. Chairman of the Honor
Council, Vice-President of Sigma
Chi Fraternity, and a member of
and Universities.
Maynor noted that “Coach
Lewis has the credentials
necessary to continue the rich
tradition of Brevard College
basketball. He is a brilliant
tactician and organizer and given
his warmth and charisma, he is
sure to be highly regarded by
players and students alike. Given
his strong acadgmic credentials
Sam also will be quite an asset to
us as an instructor in the Division
of Health and Physical
Education.”
President Martinson com
mented, “We had numerous
applicants from major univer
sities and colleges, most of whom
were assistant coaches or former
head coaches. However, it
seemed to be the feeling of the
committee to go for youth
because of the grueling demands
of the position. As a small school
like Brevard, we have no
assistant coach to recruit. The
varsity coach must do it all. The
one quality that marks Sam
Lewis is that he is a winner in the
true sense of that word. From the
head coach at Duke to the farmer
in eastern Carolina, everyone is
impressed with this young man’s
leadership ability.”
Nicholson New Director
Of Institutional Grants
Miss Nicholson will be working
with Title 3 to determine if
Brevard qualifies for these funds
as a developing institution. It is
going to be her task to decide
Brevard College’s eligibility for
this grant. Miss Nicholson stated
that the eligibility is based on a
''^ini-grant. Possible Factors
included in the decision are; The
Locations of the school and where
the students are from.
Next year will bring many
changes to the BC campus. One of
tliese changes will occur in the
Science Department. The head of
l^iat department, Bobby Jean
Nicholson, will be moving onto a
‘>eld which she calls “exciting.”
After these factors are dealt
with it will be necessary that
questions answered. 1)
""at is our mission? This
Question deals with the school
“Self. The purpose of Brevard
allege will be determined by the
answers to this question. 2) How
0 we accomplish our mission?
’s question will be used to

Discussed In March 28th Seminar
Brevard College meets tne
student’s need. 3) How do we
evaluate our accomplishments?
This evaluation will be done
through the institutional
development committee.
The Institutional Development'
Committee will be composed of a
group of ad hoc committees.
These committes will include
members from every facet of
Brevard College. Ad
ministrators, staff, faculty,
resident tutors and students will
all work together one this com
mittee.
When asked about how she felt
about her new role Miss
Nicholson replied, “I’m very
excited. It’s real challenge. I feel
that much good wil come from it.
We’ll looking at ourselves as to
our strengths and weaknesses. It
will be an opportunity to bring the
whole campus together. She went
on to say that the new job would
give her a new opportunity to
work with students in a different
role instead of the “teacher to
student relationsship”.
On Wednesday, March 28, 10
qualified men and women
representing 20 math and
science-related fields, arrived at
Brevard College. These men and
women, who’s homes or offices
are located in or around the
Brevard area, visited the campus
in order to allow any interested
students to speak to them about
pursuing careers in their various
math and science-related fields.
Under the direction of Miss
Bobbie Jean Nicholson, students
were given the opportunity to
express in which math or science-
related field their interest lay.
Miss Nicholson then compiled
and categorized this information
before inviting qualified per
sonnel to speak on the various
areas of interest.
A brief and informal in
troduction of the guests, along
with a serving of refreshments,
was held on the first-floor hall of
the Moore Science Building.
Students and speakers were then
escorted to various classrooms in
order to discuss their respective
fields of interest. These areas
ranged from Aerospace study
and Landscape Design to
physical therapy and Genetic
Engineering.
Those guest speakers in at
tendance included retired
chemical engineer Ed. Gipt, Jim
Reid and Dan Stearns of the
United States Forest Service,
Newland Clinic’s Dr. Benton, Bob
Betts of the Olin Corporation,
Judy Robinson, Dr. Brooks, and
Roger Meade of the Transylvania
Community Hospital, Eddie
Bryson of the Brevard phar
macy, and Eric Christensen, a
representative from the Com
munity College System of the
New York, whom is now retired.
“There were five other
representatives of various fields
who felt they could more readily
and effectively aid students in
terested in their fields by having
the students visit them at their
place of work,” Miss Nicholson
added.
SGA Elections Held,
New Officers Elected
by Vanessa Davis
Elections for the Student
Goverrmient Association were
held last week. What once ap
peared a dull, bland campaign
burst into a. fury of fireworks
between candidates Kevin
Herron and Mark Armstrong for
SGA President. The other can
didates won without challenge,
Scott Singletary, Vice President
of Judical Board and John Little,
Vice President of Social Board.
As votes were being counted
evidence proved to show some
invalid votes. Some ineligible
people showed up at the polls and
took advantage of this cause. The
race between Mark and Kevin
was too close for a winner so a
run off election was announced.
Mark and Kevin campaigned
hard to urge all returning
freshmen to go to the polls and
support them.
After the run off election Mark
Armstrong was elected our 1979-
1980 president of SGA. Mark is a
freshman representative of the
Student Government Association,
cheerleader and a member of
PTK. When asked why he chose
to run for this office he said, “I
ran because I wanted to set up a
student association that would
benefit the student body and
bring the students and the ad
ministration closer together. I
plan to serve as one of the best
presidents we have ever had in a
long time. I have already been
talking to John Little and Scott
Singletary about plans for next
fall. The trustees said we may^
have a bigger budget to work
with next fall so this should
help.”
