Popular show music for the After a 23 hour ride on tne activity bus, the V nembers of Delta Pi and cneir sponsors stepped out onto the streets of Kansas City, Missouri. They had ridden all night and had gotten little sleep. Within minutes after their arrival, they all had changed clothes and were downstairs campaigning, it didn’t matter to them, for they had waited for months to be here at the National Phi Theta Kappa convention. Delta Pi’s colorful campaign for Donna Harriger highlighted the entire convention. Hearing the theme “Get on the Harriger Express” and seeing trains everywhere, no one left the convention not knowing who Donna Harriger or Delta Pi was. Delta Pi was highly honored when they received a “Top Ten in the Nation” award. This award goes to the ten chapters in the nation which the National office feels have contributed the most to the efforts of Phi Theta Kappa. This award was really not ex pected and when announced the' members went into a state of escatic shock. The Brevard chapter also received many individual wards. The National Music Award recognizing the best original SGA Makes Another Year Successful by Vanessa Davis The Student Government Association has worked hard to complete the academic year of 1978-79. Even though the association was confronted with various problems such as non-attendance at meetings, lack of workers for the Coffee House and lack of support for various committees, the year turned out to be a good one. The SGA sponsored various events and activities for the participation of the students. The Social Board branch made events like the Homecoming Weekend, Parents Weekend, the Christmas Dance, the Valentines Dance and the Spring Dance, all possible. Social Board provided all the movies you saw on Sunday nights, and the Coffee Houses on Thrusday nights. These events were all worked and set up by the Social Board members, Dean HQuk and Don Scarborough s assistance. SGA help sponsor many clubs by Scott Singletary composition went to John Meadows, a sophomore at Brevard College. Joan is a music major and is the accompanist for the Collegiate Singers. Brevard College has received the National Music award for two consecutive years. Cyndi Blalock was presented a scholarship to Florida Atlantic University. This scholarship was given to three outstanding college students this year. After Cyndi won the scholarship she phoned her parents and found out that her sister had been awarded the Sims scholarship to Brevard College that same day. The convention also sponsored a two-mile run called the “Scholar Jogger.” Well, Delta Pi refused to be left out in this area as Mr. Gene McDowell won first place among the male sponsors at the convention. The group also performed two songs at the sponsor’s meeting. They were later asked to perform their songs for the entire con vention. Nervously, the members of Delta Pi lined across the stage and sang “Sweet Survivor” only to end to the sight of a crowd rising to their feet with applause. The three days of the con vention proved to be very busy ones for the students. When they veren’t out campaigning they were going to discos, ballets, concerts, baseball games, etc. At night, they went to parties that lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Most of all, the convention produced unforgettable memories for them all. They will always remember such things as the sense of accomplishment that they felt when they got to hang their banner across the stage, the sense of “freezing to death” that they felt while waiting to get into the baseball park, the sense of pride they felt as they finished their song to a standing audience, the sense of closeness that they felt toward each other and to their new friends, the sense of boredom during Hazel’s long speech, and a sense of sincere appreciation for their sponsors: Mrs. Sarah Beard, Mr. Gene McDowell, and Mr. Claude Stulting. The excitement of this year’s convention made them yearn even more for nex:t year’s con vention in Washington, D.C. So, look for Delta Pi to be “flying high” all the way to Washington.
