George Qualifies
for Nationals
Brevard’s track team has gone
through many changes ths year.
A team which started out with
thirty members has now dwin
dled to sixteen. The loss in
numbers is not necessarily a
drawback. The amount of
teamwork and the quality of the
team has made up for this loss.
The team participated in the
Davidson relays. This was the
largest meet that the team
participated in all year. Thirty
teams participated in the event.
The Tornadoes’ distance medley
relay team placed sixth. The
team and their times were; Todd
Murphy (1.58.9), Rob Craig
(51.2), John George (3.07.3) and
Jeff Wentworth (4.25). They only
missed the school record by
seven seconds. Wentworth also
placed third in an impressive run
in the 3000 steeplechase
March 15 the team ran in a
quad meet with the University of
South Carolina, Baptist College
and Western Carolina University.
Brevard lost to Western by only
two points. Freshman John
George qualified for the nationals
which will be held in Eugene,
Oregon May 11. George ran the
5000 meters in 14.55.2 bettering
the qualifying standard of 15.07.
John Holt won the pole vault with
avaultof 12’6”.
Lamar Roberts placed third in
the 400 meter intermediate
hurdles with a time of 56.2. Mike
Shell placed third in the triple
jump with a jump of 46’8”. The
400 meter relay team consisting
of Roberts, George Fox, Craig,
and Sulayman Njie took third.
The 1600 meter relay team of
Murphy, Roberts, Fox and Craig
took third also. Murphy ran a
personal best in the 1500 meter
run with a time of 4.01. Freshman
Jeff Wentworth suffered a
hairline fra( ‘’’re in his foot in a
fall in the st plechase.
On April 17 the team beat Lees-
McRae Junior College 106-38.
Club Soccer
Successful
by Tim McGuire
After a successful season in the
fall, the Brevard College Soccer
team has participated in the
Western Carolina Soccer League
on a club level.
Coach Don Scarborough’s
forces continued a winning
tradition which is common for
Brevard Athletics this year.
The Tornados posted a 3-2-2
record and finished fourth among
the eight teams in the league.
The reason for competing in
such a league is to gain more
experience for the' fall season.
Scarborough also added, “This is
a great way to keep in shape and
also work on the basic fun
damentals of the game, but
mainly this league is meant for
fun which is very difficult to do
during the fall season with all of
the pressures of competition.”
