THE CLARION
Page 4
SPORTS
By Bobby Hayes
September. A hectic yet
wonderful month for the sports
fan as he or she chooses what to
read and watch. Optimistic
coaches prepare for the advent of
the football wars while tension
builds as the baseball pennant
races move down the home
stretch.
Now for my promised fearless
pigskin prognosticions. In the
college ranks, there shall be two
separate evaluations: the Top
Ten and the Bottom Five. The
Number One Team of 1979 season
will be the Texas Longhorns.
Why? They return nine defensive
starters from the fine ’78 team
that demolished a good Maryland
team 42-0 in last year’s Sun Bowl.
Also remaining intact is the
entire Longhorn offensive line
and the two Jones boys, Jam,
their leading rusher, and Lam,
their leading receiver of the year
ago. Texas simply has too much
experience to be stopped.
LINE
For the Bottom Five, the
distinction of being the worst
team in the country goes to Rice
University. Their credentials are
as follows: 2-9 worksheet in 1978,
defeats of 66-7, 58-0, 49-25 and 34-0
in ’78, never giving up less than 23
points in their nine losss, and
scoring seven or less points in
five games. To top it all off, most
of last year’s team returns for
another fateful year. Awesome.
The rest of my Top Ten and
Bottom Five looks like this:
Top Ten Bottom Five
1. Texas l.Rice
2. Southern Cal 1. Vanderbilt
3. Alabama 3. Northwesteri
4. Oklahoma 4. Virginia
5. Perdue 5. Wake Forest

‘100 percent Better
By Ray Duckworth
Last year Brevard College’s
cross country squad was rated
fourth in the nation. According to
Norm Witek, cross country
coach, this year’s team is as good
as last year’s even though it is an
inexperienced team with only two
returning sophomores.
Those two runners are All-
Americans Jeff Wentworth and
John George. Last year Jeff was
rated the fourteenth best runner
in the nation’s junior colleges.
John was ranked seventeenth.
Along with Wentworth and
George eighteen freshmen have
joined the squad, forming
Brevard’s largest Cross-Country
team ever.
This year’s squad includes
Ronnie Treadway who as a high
school senior was one of the top
two milers in the nation. Keith
Johnson, Michael Bachman,
Richard Haymaker, and Greg
Stotler who led their high school
team in Virginia to a state title
also join the team. Roger
Saulsman, an outstanding
Tarheel thinclad, is another new
addition to the team. His
credentials include a third place
finish in the state championships.
Tim Stewart who hails from
Florida also promises to put on a
good showing. Joe Briscoe,
another North Carolinian, is a
promising runner. Briscoe placed
eighth in N.C. last year. Two
runners, Mark Hall and David
Dietz are injured but might make
it into the top seven. Rounding
out the squad are Jay Baxter,
Paul Bailey, Chuck Dogten,
Nivalde Mason, Steven Phipps,
Haime Ruiz, and Jeff Taylor.
Donna McLain is running
unofficially.
Right now it is impossible to
name the top seven runners, but
on September l, Wentworth,
George, Treadway and Stewart
all tied for first in a ten mile time
trial at 54:39.
The teams first match is today
at 3:30 at the cross country track.

Sam Lewis will take over the
head coaching job of the men’s
varsity basketball which was
vacated by John Meyeroff. Mr.
Lewis attended Wake Forest
University, where he received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in
Political Science. While at Wake
Forest, Lewis was active in
student affairs. He was a
member of the Honor Council,
and was president of the council
his senior year. He was named to
the Dean’s List his junior and
senior years.
Mr. Lewis is from Burlington,
North Carolina, where he at
tended Western Alamance High
School. He enjoys all sports. He
also likes to listen to country
music. Before Mr. Lewis came to
Brevard College he held high
school teaching and coaching
position in Winston-Salem,
Raleigh, and Fayetteville, North
Carolina. Mr. Lewis gave this as
his most important reason for
coming to Brevard: “I really like
the faculty and the students here.
I am convinced that there is not
any faculty or student body that
is as good as Brevard’s in North
Carolina.” He also stated that he
thought Brevard would be a good
place to enter into college
coaching. In addition to being the
head basketball coach, Lewis will
instruct Physical Education
courses.

“The Brevard College Soccer
Team has the potential of being
the best team that we have had
for years,” says Coach Don
Scarborough. The Torandos
played in an exhibition game with
the Varsity squad of Appalachian
State, the 15th ranked team in the
NCAA Division 1. The score
remained 0 - 0 until the last 10
minutes of the half; however, in
the last few minutes Appalachian
scored twice. Hank Stenbrecker,
Appalachian’s soccer coach,
spoke highly of the Torandos in
sayng that he feels Brevard is
better than any four-year schools
that they have played this year.
Coach Scarborough believes
that this year’s team is 100 per
cent better than last years and
the reason for this is that the
returning players have improved
tremendously, along with ob
taining the finest group of
fxeshman recruits. For instance,
Ed Pagan, from Miami, played
on the 19 and under U.S. National
Team, Teddy Winston, from
Belgium, was voted All State for
North Carolina, All South - All
American in High School and is
one of the best soccer payers that
North Carolina has ever
produced. Also, Victor Chee and
Dale Ramnosky, from North
Miami Beach are very good
players and quite valuable to the
team. The returning players are
invaluable to the team.
Hassan Regimand was an All
South selection for the NJCAA
National Jr. College Athletics
Association. Coach Scarborough
said that last year Hassan was
the key to the team. Others
returning are Jeff Lofton,
Freddie Kinnear, Mark Lee
Bobby Lougher, and Bobby
Stinnett. Andy Dickinson has
looked outstanding in the pre
season workouts and is just now
“tapping his potentials”. Sam
Licata, Brevard’s goal keeper,
has improved so much that Don
feels he may prove to be the best
goalie that we have seen in years.
With these creditentials and with
dedication of the team, the
Tornados may climb to become
number one.
This year’s schedule has been
upgraded and made more
competive. Brevard will be
hosting its own invitational at the
end of September with Erskine,
Dekalb South, and Dekalb
Central.
The Tornados’ first game is
today against Warren Wilson’s B
Team - at Warren Wilson. The
opening home game is scheduled
for Thursday, Sept. 13 against
Presbyterian College. Both
games are at 4:00.
