Volleyball
Young
Team Inexperienced

The 1979 Brevard College
Volleyball season is underway
once again. The Lady: Tornados,
who are coached by Gail An
derson, have compiled a record
of one win against five losses. The
majority of matches that the girls
are in are tri-matches. A tri
match consists of three teams
playing each other in a best two-
out-of-three game match.
The Lady Tornados opened up
their season at Spartanburg, S.C.
on Sept. 21, against Chowan and
Spartanburg Methodist. The girls
lost both matches by a score of 2-
0. On Sept. 25, Brevard scored it’s
first victory of the season in a tri-
mateh at Montreat Anderson. In
the first match, the Lady Tor
nados defeated King’s College 2-
0, but lost to Montreat-Anderson
2-1 in what Coach Anderson
termed as a very tight match. On
«»88CSta»000880t80t3
Sept. 28, Brevard journeyed down
to Greensboro where they played
Coker and Greensboro College.
They lost both matches by scores
of 2-0. At press time, information
on the matches played Oct. 2, 5,
and 6 was not available.
Coach Anderson has three
players returning from last
year’s team; Captain Tammy
Dickens, Donna Barnwell, and
Misae Tanaka. At the present
time, the team is without the
services of Jane Callahan who is
out with a knee injury. Coach
Anderson stated that the team is
lacking experience, but the girls
are working very hard. The Lady
Tornados host Spartanburg
Methodist and Montreat-
Anderson tonight at 6:30 in
Boshamer Gymnasium. Coach
Anderson and the team would
appreciate support by the student
body.

Here’s a look at some football
notes. Have you purchased your
order of Woody Hayes toilet
paper yet? The tissue, painted
with a caricature of former Ohio
State football Coach Woody
Hayes is being sold by Chuck
Laterza, novelty toilet paper
manufacturer in Fremont, Ohio.
Laterza stated that the Woody
paper is outselling by 2-1 similar
tissue featuring Michigan Coach
Bo Schembechler on each sheet (
a statistic I’m sure Coach
Schembechler is greatly con
cerned about). He says he plans
to keep selling his Woody paper
until the inventory of 1500 rolls is
depleted and will make more if
Hayes decided to run for the
Senate. It would be a great way to
stay in touch with your Senator,
right?
It has been said about many
players that they are all-purpose
and very verstile. However,
Washington Redskins running
back John Riggins used to carry
it a bit beyond belief. Not only did
he play both offense and defense
on his high school football team,
he also played tuba in the band at
halftime in his football uniform.
Now that’s versatile.
In the quotable quotes
department, Hank Stram, CBS
football analyst, described New
York Jets wide' receiver Wesley
Walker in this manner, “With his
speed, Wesley has those defen
sive backs backing up from the
moment he steps out of the bus. ”
The winner of the Bubba’s
Pizza Football Contest is Pat
Tate. Pat, a freshman at
Brevard, missed three games but
was the only contestant to pick
Green Bay’s upset win over New
England.
The supposedly rebuilding
Washington Redskins have
surprised quite a few people by
winning four out of their first five
games. Curt Gowdy explained
their current success.in this way,
“The youngsters play like
veterans, while the veterans play
like enthused youngsters.” Now
if somebody could just explain
how Tampa Bay is; 5-0....
Name of the season: Derrel
Gofourth, offensive guard of the
Green Bay Packers. Excuse me
now as I must get in my order for
some Woody Hayes tissue - a
great Christmas gift no doubt?

by Ray Duckworth
Norm Witek has been the coach
of Brevard’s Track and Cross
Country teams for the past
twelve years. Over this period,
his teams have compiled 138
I victories to just 24 losses. Until
(the National Junior College

Sfor the 1/2, 1 mile, 2 miles, and
idecathlon races.
His runners have run well
jenough to give Brevard 17 All-
jAmerican Certificates, as well as
j5 Honorable Mention Cer
tificates. Two of his former
runners were given try-outs for
the Olympics, while another ran
or Trinidad in the Olympics.
Coach Witek came to Brevard

Tennessee on a Track Scholar
ship. He had offers to go to some
of the Big 10 schools, Michigan,
Michigan State, Purdufe, Nor
thwestern, and Wisconsin.
He had the second fastest time
in the state of Illinois when he
was in high school. At Tennessee
he finished second individually
twice, and on five different oc
casions his teams finished first.
As a coach, he runs with the

instead of meeting them at the

the players running with them.
He has won the Atlanta 440
