Edition 6 Friday, December 7,1979 Volume 47 Financial Aid Assembly Set December 12 A general assembly dealing with the subject of financial aid for the 1980-81 school year is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12th, at 10:00 a.m. in Dunham Auditorium. According to Mr. Cunningham, Director of Financial Aid for Brevard College, there are four major objectives to this meeting; 1. To distribute to all students that financial aid forms which must be filed in order to establish a “need” for the 1980-81 school year. 2. To provide a detailed ex planation of the form and the information which the form calls for in order to help the students avoid many of the mistakes which were committeed on previous forms. 3. To provide an explanation dealing with the filing of the Federal Government’s Basic Educational Opportunity Grant. 4. To cover the various sources of financial aid in a student’s financial aid package and their renewal for the 1980-81 school year. This coverage will include (but not be limited to) the following awards and the stipulations concerning their renewal: a. Scholarship Day Awards. b. Citizenship Scholarships. c. Dean’s Scholarships (for merly Honor Scholarships). d. Sims Scholarships. e. Talent Awards. The Financial Aid office would like to emphasize that both freshmen (returning next year as sophomores) and SOPHOMORES planning to further their education at another educational institution must file the proper financial aid forms in order to receive aid next year. In 1979-80, over $«50,000 has been awarded in financial assistance to Brevard College students ih0 arCsfs I % Bach Brings Tears B.C. Names 27 To Who’s Who I don’t profess to know an enormous amount about classical music, but I do know that any work by J.S. Bach will almost cause me to cry because of its overwhelming beauty. Thank fully, the Brevard Chamber Orchestra’s concert in conjuction with the Brevard College Chamber Choir and the Collegiate Singers gave me just such an opportunity for tears. The Orchestra, under the direction of Jackson Parkhurst, is to be commended for their fine performance. Several orchestra members are BC students. The soloists for the afternoon were Patricia Robinson, Wally Pallas, and Edgar Evans. For those who do not already know it, that Mr. Evans and the one who teaches here at B.C. are one and the same. All three of the soloists gave outstanding performances. In particular, the duet by Robinson and Pallas proved to be exciting. In the second half of the show, the orchestra was joined by the Brevard College ensembles. The Chamber Choir, under the direction of Lee Bratton, sang three absolutely beautiful madrigals. This section of the program sent my notions that songs always have to have ac companiment tumbling into the coals. The selections “Fa Una Can- zona” (in the original Italian), “Oh, Eyes of My Beloved” and “Oh Lord, Increase My Faith” were charmingly done. The last segment of the show was a complete cantata, Bachs 142nd, “Uns ist ein kind Geboren.” The Collegiate singers served as the chorus for this work. Their strong voices reached even the most remote corners of the large First Baptist sanctuary. It was a spine tingling performance to say the least. The 142nd cantata , a Christmas cantata, started the Yuletide season off on the right note for many listeners. The poise of both B.C. en sembles reflect the rigorous training they are given by Mr. Bratton. Brevard College is lucky to have such a gifted group of students and such a dedicated teacher. Speech Contest Changes Twenty seven Brevard College sophomores have been named to the 1979-1980 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior College. This award, given annually, is based on campus leadership, scholastic achievement and citizenship. National recognition is a pinnacle in a student’s career. From a list of all eligible sophomores, the student boy nominated 50 people. The faculty then voted from this bullet, andd the top vote getters became Who’s Who nominees. Decisions were hard this year, and so many students were worthy that Brevard actually exceeds its quote by a couple, with per mission of the Who’s Who organization. This year’s nominees are Pamela Wray Aikens, Mark Wesley Armstrong, Donna An nette Barnwell, Pamela Dawn Bullock, Rodney Parker Currin, Donna Renee Harriger, Maridee Elaine Hawkins, Kevin Douglas Herron, Melody Lynn Holmes, Kimberly Rae Hoover, David Steele Horner, Robert Fulton Jeffreys, Alicia Lunnette Kinard, Tadaaki Koana, John DeWitt Little, Jeffrey Artus Loftin, Annette Suzanne Miale, Scott Bryan Singletary, Randy Lee Snyder, Laura Lee Stevens, Cecilia Larie Sutton, Misoe Tanaka, Mikel Kent Todd, Jeff Duane Wentworth, Lillian Templeton White, Mary Eva Winecoff, Charlotte Mae Young. Following the announcement of the Brevard College Oratorial Contest in the November 13th edition of The Clarion, a major change has been made in the award. Mr. Ed Cunningham, who has been organizing the revival of the contest on campus, has an nounced that there will be scholarship awards as follows: ’-’irst nlace $100.00; Second place $50.00; and Third place $25.00. The winners will be announced at the close of the final competition which is scheduled for February 20, 1980 at 7:30 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium and is open to the public. Application, blanks must be filed on or before February 1, 1980, and are available at the receptionist’s desk in Beam Administration Building or in the Financial Aid office. Caroling Tonight PTK Inducts 13 by Mike McFarland Phi Theta Kappa initiated thirteen new members into its organization at the October 23rd meeting. Want a chance to celebrate the upcoming Christmas season and get into the true spirit? Then come caroling tonight, Dec. 7, and visit the homes of several faculty members plus the local nursing home.
