THE CLARION
by Bobby Hayes
Plagued by inconsistent play,
the Tornado roundballers suf
fered four disappointing defeats
before registering an important
79-74 win over Cecil College last
Monday night at Boshamer Gym.
Trailing 61-60 with 7:34 to play in
the game, the Tornados roared
back with 10 unanswered points
off of a devastating fast break
attack to lead 70-61 and were
never headed. The Tornados
placed four men in double
figures, led by Moose Timberlake
with 26 points, followed by Scott
Harper with 17, with David
Horner and Bobby Summers
adding 15. Brevard shot 68% from
the field in the first half and 61%
for the game while holding
Cecil’s to 44%.
In their season opener,
played at Brevard, the Tornados
fell to USC-Lancaster by 93-89.
Moose Timberlake led all scorers
with 27 points. USC-Lancaster
head coach Glenn DeHart was
very pleased with the win and
commented, “V/t were very
lucky to win tonight. It was hard
to get the team up after leading
by 13 points at the half. Brevard
made a fine comeback though
and we know thel next game with
them will be tough.”
The Tornados then made the
long journey to Madisonville,
Tennessee to tackle the Hiwassee
Tigers only to lose 101-93. Moose
Timberlake led the Tornados
with 20 points while Scott Harper
netted 19. Adding insult to injury
was a banner which hung from
the stands throughout the contest
and stated “Blow Tornades
Away.” I guess basketball and
spelling at Hiwassee do not go
hand in hand.
Brevard’s next effort proved to
be a heartbreaking defeat to the
Anderson Trojans by 88-84.
Moose Timberlake once again led
the scoring with 23 ponts and
David Horner chipped in with 20.
In this game the lights literally
went out on Brevard as a five
minute power failure halted the
action in total darkness. The
crowd remained active during
this period however as evidenced
by a story I overheard after the
game. Two couples were walking
out of the gym and talking about
the power outage when one of the
women said, “My husband didn’t
even kiss me while it was dark.”
Her husband then turned to her
and replied, “You mean that
wasn’t you I kissed?”
The Tornados next assignment
was in Spartanburg, South
Carolina to play the Pioneers of
Spartanburg Methodist. A power
outage was again a factor as a
tree fell over some power lines
and delayed the start of the
contest some 30 minutes. The
afternoon was made even longer
for the Brevard faithful as the
Tornados fell 83-66 to the
Pioneers despite Scott Harper’s
20 points.
To be sure, the Tornados have
not put themselves in a good
position. But in a conference
where you play each member
three times during the regular
season, it is quite apparent that
the season has a long way to go.
With enthusiastic support from
the fans and the talent that
Brevard definitely shows, the
Tornados are far from being
counted out of the WCJCC race.
I found it quite amusing how
the staff of the University of
Colorado got the football field
cleared of snow after huge
snowstorm. Colorado, which is
suffering from a dismal football
season, offered anyone who
would come out and help shovel
snow off the field during the week
free tickets to the next Colorado
football game. With the kind of
year they have had, perhaps it
would be more appropriate for
the players and coaches to shovel
snow off the stands for the fans
that have the spirit to support
Colorado’s losing efforts.
In the quotable quotes
department, Floyd Smith, NHL
Toronto Maple Leaf coach, seems
to be heading for the Yogi Berra
Hall of Wisdom with this
statement following a tie game
his team had with Edmonton: “I
have nothing to say, and I’m only
going to say it once. ’ ’

area) AskN.C, State andb) Yes,
according to the Garden State
Independence, Tangerine, and
Hall of Fame Bowl. California,
Syracuse, LSU, and Missouri all
finished 6-5 and received bowl
bids. The NBA has learned the
bitter lesson of rewarding
mediocre teams with playoff
berths by suffering plunging
attendance figures; now must the
NCAA ruin college football with
its acceptance of any prospective
bowl with a buck in its hand?
Let’s hope not.

Wentworth Places Fifth
by Ray Duckworth
On November 20, Jeff Went
worth placed fifth in the AAU
time trails. The meet was for
anyone twenty and under in the
nation. The top seven runners are
tentatively set to go to Paris.
Jeff was pleased with his runs
in both the AAU and The National
Finals at Wichita, where he
finished fifth also.
Wentworth, a co-captain on the
Cross Country team, says that for
a runner to be mentally prepared
for an upcoming meet, he must
be confident of his run and be
pleased with his outcome. Jeff
says that he prepares physically
by practicing. If Coach Witek
wants a hard run, he runs so that
he hurts, but if the coach wants a
relaxed run, he runs to his
relaxed pace.
Jeff has enjoyed his time with
the team here at Brevard, but he
is now looking to the future. He is
considering several schools,
including Tennessee, Penn State,
North Carolina, and North
Carolina State. However, he says
that there is no definite choice
yet.
