'A 'B THE CLARION THE VOICE OF BREVARD COLLEGE STUDENTS '>0 VOLUME 47 Edition 10 Friday, March 14,1980 E I im F estival F eatures Mr. Paul Jeffrey by Nancy Ennis On February 29, the Brevard College Music Department hosted a Stage Band Festival featuring Mr. Paul Jeffrey, famous tenor saxophone player who has toured with B.B. King, Count Basie and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Also featured were the Western Carolina Stage Band, seven area high school bands (Brevard, Asheville, West Henderson, Tuscola, Mt. Heritage, Sylva- Webster, and T.C. Roberson) and our own Brevard College Stage Band. Mr. Jeffrey was here to work with each band and help them perfect their style, intonation, musicianship and overall per formance. Mr. Jeffrey, a leading recor ding artist, received his B.S. degree from Ithaca College in N.Y. and has studied privately with Sonny Rollins. He appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival with his own Octet. While here, he introduced his own composition to the B.C. Stage Band - “Salsa Ein De Burgermeister De Francoise” - and personally conducted them through it at the Festival. Afterwards, he said he liked the B.C. Stage Band specifically because of their “great interest in jazz”, and their “very at tentive band members”. He commented that the “trombone section was their strongest point” and that tenor saxophone player Kevin Baisley and drummer Eastman Curtis were especially good. Mr. Jeffrey will be lecturing next month at Howard Univer sity. His appearance was cour tesy of Yamaha International Corporation of Buena Park, California. The festival was the first of its kind in Western N.C. and was well received by the audience. The bands revived some old great music from the ’30’s, '40’s, and ’50’s and some contemporary iazz charts from the '60’s and ’70’s. The W.C.U. Stage Band, under the direction of Mr. Mario Gaetano, also played in the cafeteria at dinner on Friday. A member of the band, trombonist Steve Rabey, com mented, “Paul Jeffrey was, by far, the best saxophonist that I have ever heard. His style and overall playing ability just overwhelmed me.” Singletary Goes to D.C, The sunlight in this picture will soon be commonplace around B.C.
