The Clarion Tuesday, November 4,1980 College Bowl by Pam Blalock and DeAnna Johnson This President was called “The American Talleyrand,” “The Kinderhook Fox,” and “The Little Magician.” He served as Jackson’s Secretary of State, as his Vice-President and then succeeded him as President. For- 20-points ... who is he? This is just one of the many questions one might hear at a Phi Theta Kappa monthly college bowl. One might be asked to recite the Preamble or be expected to know the dreadful people who invented Calculus. Strange as it sounds, the participants claim that it is a lot of fun. One reason is because the competition is between the dorms. A student who is in terested in competing on his or her dorm’s team can sign up in the cafeteria the week before the event, or he or she can come early to the College Bowl to fill any vacancies there may be. Phi Theta Kappa organizes all the College Bowls and mvites members of the faculty to act as mediators. Two college bowls have already been held, one on Math and Science with Don Lander as mediator and the second was on History and Political Science with that turtle like fellow, Peter Burger as the guest host. Steve Moore, Cameron Tankersley, Barbara Sue Combs, and Hong Sian Oen composed the winning team for Math and Science. They were from Stamey and Ross and were known as the “Stross” or “Stroh’s” team. The History and Political Science victors were Mary Gay Michaels, Jeff Taylor, Dan Clay and Gilbert Bradham, members of the “Pink and Green” team and known af fectionately as “Green and Preppette.” (It’s okay M.G., we know the light bulb didn’t work.) Next month’s College Bowl will deal with Sports. PTK is hoping for active participation from every dorm. Be sure and look for posters announcing the date and sign up for your dorm’s team. You should probably start brushing up on your sports trivia. Incidentally, “The American Talleyrand” was Martin Van Buren. You And Your Roomie by Karen Wehunt Getting along with your roommate plays an important role in enjoying college life. Many students suffer when they have a roommate they cannot get along with. By changing room mates, they can solve their problem. Usually changing helps, but sometimes one seems to move around all year long. This is typical at all colleges including Brevard. Sometimes I think students move too much, but then again, I wonder why some don’t change. For example, roommate #1 wants to move in with one of her friends. She doesn’t tell her roommate because she’s afraid she’ll hurt her feelings. Also, roommate #2 is having these same feelings toward the other. This continues throughout the year and the only ones who know are the other people living on the hall. If the two students would talk about their problem and be more open with each other, they both would be happier. No one knows anything unless they are told what they need to know. Another typical situation is when one student wants her roommate to move out. The two girls see each other a lot, but they never have any type of con versation other than a few words. This makes it difficult for the girl to tell her roommate to leave. Instead of telling her, she plots against her roommate. For example, she never cleans the PTK is really fired up this year and ready to conquer anything they come across. Caddyshack “Hillarious” knows will wake her roommate. When this doesn’t bother the girl, she finally tells her to leave. This upsets me sometimes, because the two girls have never talked together to solve their problem. In my opinion, my roommate and I get along better than most roommates. We talk over our personal problems as well as problems affecting both of us. This helps us understand each other’s needs plus we have a better chance for remaining friends. College friends play an important role in one’s life, because it is said, “frienog made at college are usually kepi throughout life.” by Lisa French Caddyshack, starring Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray as “Carl,” is a hilarious farce about a young caddy, Danny Newman, who works at a posh country club golf course. Danny is torn bet ween going to college and playing golt^and between two women. Dangerfield’s vulgar, loud mouthed character is so loveable that we forget Rodney “gets no respect”. In respect, Ted Knight’s despicable judge begs to be hated. Boih SCtors keep the audience in stitches. Chase and Murray’s charac ters are both very reminiscent of their Saturday Night Live roles. These characters, a shell shocked greenskeeper (Murray), and a half-witted millionaire who considers himself a “veggie” (Chase), are very unclear and bumbling. The acting is a disappointment. The story takes a while to make its point but there is practically non-stop laughter along the way. The highlight of this flick is a treacherous little gopher who gains the audience’s support as he is bombarded by outrageous war traps. The musical score by Kenny Loggins, including the single “I’m Alright,” is excellent and lots of fun. This film is recommended for a fun evening. Now playing at the Bijou in Greenville along with Tin-S Square, Borderline, I Spit on Your GfSye. Middle Age Crazy, Prom Night, ana EJephant Man. Vote “Off The Record” by Scott Lafoy TIIK CARS - PANORAIVIA The Cars’ latest etfort, “Panorama”, is probably one of the best albums to be released this year. The band is progressing deeper into more electronically oriented music than on their two previous albums. The new songs involve much more keyboards and more sophisticated melodies than before. Ric Dcasek has come up with even catchier lyrics than before and still displays his unique talent of taking ordinary, down to earth topics and tran slating them into deep, mind boggling expressions; for in stance, rephrasing the act of committing a major crime as “living outside the misdemeanor”. The Cars are one of America’s foremost rock bands, combining a mixture of rock and new wave to produce a totally unique sound, and this album reassures their fans that the Cars are very much alive and kicking. My favorite songs from “Panorama” are “Getting Through”, which is probably the prettiest tune on the record, “Don’t Tell Me No”, which sounds like something in tune with the Cars’ tremendous debut album, and “Just Gimme Some Slack”, a fast-paced song which I dedicate whole-heartedly to the Brevard faculty. All in all, I think the Cars’ “Panorama” is an excellent album, and if you like the Cars, you should already own it. AC/DC-Back In Black With “Back In Black”, AC/DC has continued their string of fine rock and roll albums, and this one should achieve the acclaim they’ve deserved for years. “Back In Black” is one of AG/DC’s better albums, naturally consisting of pulsating heavy metal sound? that they are so famous for. “You Shook Me Night Long” is the first singiS, and is doing well on the charts. My favorite cut is “Hell’s Bell® which is the opening song of the current AC/DC concert tour and receives the most FM airplay oi any song on the album, “Back In Bi’^ck” is a good ro and roll album, which I m sur AC/DC fans all over will quic Y agree with.
