Clarion 8th Edition Tuesday, February 17,1981 Pagel A Talk With Dean Don Because of the recent changes in interhouse visitation pohcy and because of the memorandum left in each student’s mailbox on Feb. 3 informing students that their dorms had been “closed for the remainder of the semester,” and that “room searches” were to be made at early hours of the morning, the Clarion saw the need to straighten out a few rumors and get comprehensive facts regarding these issues. The following is the text of an interview with Dean of Student Affairs Don Scarborough regarding the recent problems and rule changes. Q. Many students on campus have let it be known that they feel they are not being treated as adults. What is your view on this widespread opinion? A. “Lots of students felt that we were not treating them as responsible adults. May I question our ability to accept adult responsibility? Recently, I have had to deal with: 1. Students steaUng milk crates from area grocers. 2. Setting down guidelines for snowballing so that buildings are not destroyed and students are not injured. 3. Students throwing trash and tobacco juice out of residence hall windows. 4. Students rolling the residence halls, lobbies, and campus with toilet paper. 5. Roommates and suitemates that cannot respect one another’s property. “I do realize that the majority of our student body are truly responsible adults, but there are incidents when I must question where the responsible adults are hiding." “The new parietal guidelines for supervised visitation is an attempt to give each student, floor, and residence hall responsibility for their own area. The adults among us will exercise that responsibility. Those unable to accept it will be the ones that will be suspended and then cry that they have not been treated as adults. Behind Closed Doors. Q. Couldn’t part B of the memo left in all students' mail boxes on February 3 be considered illegal because of Senate Bill 621, Amended General Statute 14-286 which stales in part: “It shall be unlawful for any person or persons to wantonly and willfully...pull the slide arm or lever of any station or signal box of any fire alarm system, except in case of fire? A. “We can conduct fire drills in each of our residence halls. The regulations also require that we inspect the entire building so that we can determine if in fact the entire building has been cleared.” Q. When you ring the bells to check the rooms, does everyone have to leave the building? A. “Yes, because we have to give them (the fire department) a log on how fast it takes them to leave the building”.
