Community Affairs

Although Christian Encounter
Week takes place two weeks
before the official arrival of
Spring, it promises to bring with
it the freshness of renewal and
hope associated with that season.
From March 8th to March 10th
BC students will be entertained
with inspiring speeches con
cerning our precious freedom we
so often take for granted.
A part of the Life and Culture
Series, this series of speeches is
rewarding in its own right, but, of
course, humanities credits are an
added plus. Attendance at one

Concerning The Visitation Policy
By Rafael Gasti
The Community Affairs Board
met on February 25 with ap
proximately thirty persons in
attendance including members of
the faculty and the ad
ministration, representatives
from student government,
resident tutors, presidents of
clubs, and other interested
students. The issue discussed was
the new dormitory policy. Steve
Moore, the Social Vice-President,
summarized the student body’s
reaction to the new parietal
regulations by citing the results
of the poll. Almost one hundred
and seventy individuals turned in
the questionnaires. 85% of them
urged a reduction of the penalty
for violators. A large number
also asked that the visitation
hours be extended.
David Hauser,who is president
of the Student Association;
recommended that a proposal
formulated by him and his
organization be adopted. It calls
for open dormitories on week
days from noon to eight-thirty
with a thirty minue grace period
and from noon to one-thirty a.m.
on weekends with a thirty minute
grace period. The propsective
penalty would be five to ten
points for the first violation and
Out With The Old. In With The New
Collegiate Singers Receive New Robes
By Francy Brown
For the past twenty-five years,
the Brevard College Collegiate
Singers have been touring and
performing in the same robes. It
•s rumored that these garments
have existed in the music
department longer than any of
he music faculty members have
3ught here at Brevard. Thus, if
you have seen these pathetic
pieces of patchwork, your em
pathy will be with those who
aesire new robes.
Consequently, Lee Bratton —
Chamber/Collegiate Choir
director has contributed his ef
forts to this matter. By con
tacting a few companies in
Michigan, he was able to obtam
donations that almost entirely
cover the cost of the new robes.
Ore hundred to one hundred-fifty
new robes have arrived - all
costing a ‘pretty penny”. The
companies to which we owe our
thanks for their contributions,
are LeRan Cooper and Brass Co ,
and Reading Brass Co. Each
company contributed almost one- .
lecture secures one credit, going
to two speeches gets you two
credits. The maximum credit
given is two, but attendance at all
four speeches is welcomed and
encouraged.
Dr. Ernest Gordon, a minister
of the Church of Scotland and
Dean of the Chapel of Princeton
University since 1955, is the
scheduled speaker. His lectures,
under the central theme of “Our
Freedom,” will include
“Freedom for God,” “Freedom
to Love,” “Freedom for
Miracles,” and “Freedom for the
World.” Two informal rap
sessions and talks to selected
classes are also planned.
Christian Encounter Week is
sponsored by the Thomas F.
Staley Foundation, a nationwide
fund established by the late in
dustrialist in 1969. This foun
dation provides a lecture
program with distinguished
speakers to small Christian
liberal arts colleges like Brevard.
Please plan to participate in
this refreshing program. Your
budding faith could be brought to
full bloom.
immediate suspension for a
semester for the second violation.
Discussion began. Resident
tutors Kim and Danny Arm
strong expressed their approval
to the proposal. They felt that the
student body was acting with
more responsibility. Scott Cor
bett agreed in lessening the
punishment; however, he pointed
out that dormitories are “living
complexes” rather than social
centers. The elapse of time soon
halted the exchange, and
chairman Jane McDowell an
nounced that the next meeting
would occur the following

half of the initial cost of the robes
- leaving only a minute sum for
the school to pay.
The new robes are a deep,
navy-blue with full, flowing
sleeves. The sleeves are lined
with gold satin and a matching
gold stole. A fine touch of class is
the attractive, Old-English
Brevard College emblem on the
front of each stole.
The singers will “model” their
new robes in the Spring Concert,
April 2nd. .

seem like Brevard will see snow in March this year.
