'B Che Clarion 11th Edition Tuesday, April 21,1981 Pagel Rogers Named Men’s Basketball Coach by Ray Duckworth President Martinson named Doug Rogers Brevard’s new basketball coach on April 6th. President Martinson said Coach Rogers was chosen from a list of three capable candidates and feels the school has found a fine replacement for resigning Coach Sam Lewis. Rogers comes to Brevard after coaching at Rosman High School since 1978. While there, Rogers lead his 1979 team to the Ap palachian Conference Tour nament Championship. Rogers attended Brevard College during the years of l%2-63 where he played basketball for former coach “Chick” Martin. After participating as a Tor nado, Rogers went to Shorter College and played for Bill Foster, presently the coach at Clemson. He later replaced Foster as head coach at that school from 1970-72. Coach Rogers feels he is inheriting a lot of talent from this year’s team. He says that his recruiting for next year will be weak, since he is starting late, but he will be looking for players which are top students, have a good attitude, and show ability. He also said at the press con ference that he uses a Dean Smith style of coaching, liking the run and jump defense. Rogers says his relationship with the players will be one to last 24 hours a day. Furthermore, the coach states that he will be willing to work with players in their classes, for he feels a coach needs to show that type of in terest. Since class schedules have not been planned for next year, the new coach does not know what his schedule will include. Never theless, everyone in the BC community welcomes Rogers to the family and wishes him good luck in his first season. r President Martinson welcomes Doug Rogers as the new basketball coach for the men’s team next year. Over the twelve years she has been here. Coach A. has coached women’s basketball, volleyball, and tennis. She sponsored the cheerleading squad at one time. When asked about her resignation. Coach Anderson answered, “I have loved Brevard over the years. When I say Brevard, the first thing I think of is the students.” Her relationship with students does stand out in her mind, for she says, “I love the students, and I hate to see that relationship end.” Coach Anderson is another of the many coaches who share the philosophy of “lead-by- example.” She is the type of coach who is more concerned about the maturity of her players than her coaching record. For example, she is vitally concerned with their scholastic standing. This year’s tennis players seem to have enjoyed the opportunity to participate for the coach. Sophomore Jamye Cartner says, “I think Coach A’s leaving is a big loss to Brevard College, for her coaching ability is a big plus! She is not only a coach, but a great friend to many students. She will be missed, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have played tennis for her.” Jane Preston adds the same type of sentiment by saying, “Brevard won’t feel right without Coach A here. She has been a special friend and coach. I hope she continues to touch the people she meets with the loving warmth that makes her so special.” Coach Anderson appreciates the friendship she has made with faculty and students over the years. She also hopes that everyone knows how thankful she is for their help. She has taught everything from field hockey to first aid while she has been at BC. Coach Anderson is uncertain about her future and says, “I am unsure about coaching again, but I do plan to teach again.” Whatever Coach A does decide for the future, she is wished good luck in her career and life as well. On April 6, the SGA announced the new executive officers and congratulated them. The new officers are: President - Bill Forehand, Judicial Vice- President - John McMinn, and Social Vice- President - Allison Turner. The SGA announced it will be picked up all refrigerators rented this year on April 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. If you have one, the SGA will be in contact with you. Also announced was the filming of a movie on campus concerning Methodist schools in our area. Help with the equipment will be needed. If you can help, please contact David Hauser. David Hauser also announced the donating of profit from the refrigerator to the Eagle s Nest Camp for Diabetic Children. The money would be set up in a scholarship fund for financially needy children. It is hoped that the SGA can carry this on for years to come. Brevard College Students Are Not Lacking In The Department Of Creativity by Gay Harshbarger Have you noticed some of the strange things that have hap pened at Brevard this year? Of course, there has been the usual pulling of fire alarms, throwing of smoke bombs, snowballs and water balloons, and the smell and haze of fire extinguishers in the halls, not to mention the toilet paper seen blowing in the breeze. And what about the “mysterious” disappearance of wood and cinder blocks from the music building construction site and the lights from around the bottom of the campus Christmas tree. But this year’s students have come up with some really unique ones. Not only have we had bubbles in our fountain; one morning we came outside to find a toilet sitting in the yard under the flagpole. Now, you have to wonder who thinks these things up don’t you? Even more recently, some students woke up to find their cars that they had parked along side the road, had been moved into the road. Wonder how that happened? But the final blow was when those students went down to move them and found parking tickets on their windshields. And what about the Volkswagon found in the front of the administration building by the fountains? Although these incidents (and all the others), don’t usually receive praise, they do reflect the “creativity” of some of the Brevard College students.
