Desire is Common Ingredient to 1980-’81 Sports
by Tommy Pennell
This has been a year of ups and
downs for Brevard College
Athletics. There has been
marked improvement over the
year from most athletic squads,
the main ingredient to Brevard’s
athletics this season has been the
yearn to compete.
Men’s Basketball
The Tornado’s finished the
season with an overall 10-14
record after losing in the first
round of the Conference Tour
nament to Lees-McRae. The
honors for this season’s team
were awarded to Trent West
moreland and Mike King for
making Second Team All-
Conference. The leading scorer
was Trent Westmoreland, while
the leader in assists was Mel
Melton. A blow to the team at the
end of the season was the
resignation of Coach Sam Lewis
after two seasons at the helm.
The new coach will be Doug
Rogers, a proven winner at all his
programs.
Women’s Basketball
Under the guidance of Coach
Mary Ann Devlin, the Lady
Tornados improved greatly over
the preceding season with a 14-8
overall ledger. The team leaders
all season were Co-Captain Jill
Haynie and Freda Stovall. This
twosome lead the team in scoring
and rebounding. The season
ended after being defeated by
Spartanburg-Methodist in the
Region Tournament.
Cross Country
The Cross Country Team
concluded the season with a
second place finish in the N JCCA
Championships at Coeur d’Alene,
Idaho. This was the best ever
individual performance by the
team ever. The Tornados had
three All-Americans: Ronnie
Treadway, Randy Ward, and
John Delaney.
Soccer
The Soccer Team finished the
season with a record of 12-6-1.
The season ended at the regional
playoffs in Florida. The
scheduled game between the
Tornados and Miami Dade North
was cancelled just a couple of
hours before kick-off. The cir
cumstances surrounding the
cancellation of the game con
cerned an ineligible Tornado
player. However, after the team
returned to Brevard, they found
out that they were actually able
to compete in the playoff.
However, the team decided not to
go to New Jersey to play Miami
Dade North.
