Even though it was a non-scoring meet on the part of Virginia Tech and Brevard, the performances were still great. Two freshmen, Andy Lafimer and Willie Holeman, qualified for the Junior College Nationals in Champagne, Illinois, on March 5 and 6, in the triple jump and the long jump, respectively. Their qualifying lengths were 47’8” for Blacksburgh, VA Ten members of the Brevard track team travel ed to V.A. TECH to compete in the V.P.I. Track Classic. The team ran super under the wat chful eye of Dean Wray who filled in as coach for the weekend. The meet was filled with many top 4-year schools and univer sities. Once B.C. proved itself to be a tough competitor. Dan Clay ran 8:40, a personal record in the 3000 meters, to qualify for the NJCAA Nationals. He was follow ed closely by teammates Jeff Muth 8:45, Randy Ward 8:48, and John Delaney 8:52. Andy Latimer qualified in the high jump with a new school record of 6’8”. Andy also has qualified in the triple jump. Willie Holeman has qualified in the long jump, and also came through to jump his way to Na tionals in the triple. Freshman miler Paul Brim ran a great race in the 1500 meters only to miss qualifying by one se cond with a time of 4:00.6. Rugby Club Organized by Steve Plotter The game of rugby has rapidly become a popular collegiate sport among many schools. This European game started mainly in the Northeastern states, and is now in full swing throughout many colleges in the United States. Brevard’s rugby club got its start at the beginning of the fall 'Semester by John “Panama” Ir- ''in and Steve Piotter. Several practices were held throughout ne fall semester in order to prepare for a competitve schedule in the spring. Unfor- unately, the future outlook of the jyiby club was a little shaky. However, since the spring semester has gotten into full sw- ng, there has been more interest enthusiasm and now this bunch of sixteen blood thirsty bruisers has become quite serious and is getting in shape for the challenging and enjoyable season ahead. Because of the success of the club and due to the superb coaching of John “Panama” Ir vin and Kevin McGowan, the Brevard Renegades will now be playing such schools as the University of Eastern Tennessee, Clemson, the University of South Carolina, Knoxville, Appalachian State, and others. The club’s first game is against the University of Tennessee on Saturday, February 13. Other bright spots were Paul Brim, a freshman from Greensboro, NC, in the 1500 meters, Andy Latimer in the high jump, Dan Clay in the 5000 meters, and Gerald Hutchinson in the 5000 and 3000 meters. There are three first semester freshmen on the Brevard track team. A1 Winebarger runs the 1000 meters, Gordon Snaden runs the 3000 meters and Jeff Dorman runs the high hurdles. Dorman, who is uneligible to represent Brevard, ran unattached in the meet and his time of 7:6 would have normally qualified him for the National Championships. make it to the finals. Jeff has already ran well under the quali fying standards and is expected to be a big factor next season. In the 5000 meters two B.C. run ners ran a tough hard race as they finished 2nd, and 3rd in their heat. The race was mostly a tac tical one in that the pace was slow through the mile mark. Gerald Hutchinson passed teammate Gorden Sneaden and pushed the pace only to falter as Gorden caught back up to finish second, and Hutch finished strongly to take 3rd.
