page 4 The Clarion Friday, February 18, I9>j3 J eff Jones Breaks Long-standing Record The record had been un challenged for more than ten years, but on Saturday, January 19, sports history was made at Brevard College as freshman basketball sensation Jeff Jones broke the college’s all-time high scoring record of 45 set by Bob Miller in 1972 by netting 49 points. Jones hit 21 out of 30 shots from the floor and seven out of ten from the free-throw line against the Mounties of North Greenville. As the Tornados’ leading scorer and one of the league’s top players and scorers, Jones is averaging 21.7 points per game (as of press-time) while hitting an average of 58 of his floor shots and 73 from the foul line. The record-holder garnered Jones has been instrumental in MVP honors in both the Ross helping to compile the Tornados Burnes Invitational which took 17-6 record (as of press-time). place in Gainesville, Georgia, and the Smokey Mountain Invita tional held in Asheville, and he paced the Tornados to the cham pionship in both tournaments. Jones hails from Winston- Salem where he graduated from East Forsyth High, receiving Player of the Year honors his senior year. A member of the East-West All-Star team, Jones also received Honorable Mention for All-State honors. “Jeff is a great asset to om team not only because of his scor ing ability,” stated Tornado Coach Doug Rogers, “but also because of his leadership qualities.” M- Forward Jeff Jones recently broke the college’s 11-year standing record for single-game high score. By Jon Zillioux Brevard was tied for the lead with North Greenville Monday night during the closing seconds of the match in Tigerville, but Greenville’s Greg Buxton decid ed to change that as he hit the basket for 2 with only seven seconds on the clock, edging Brevard 64-62. Despite the loss, Tornado for ward Jeff Jones had a fine night as he shot for 22 points, helping Brevard put the pressure on North Greenville. TORNADOS DP:Ff:AT M-A Only two days earlier the Tor nados soundly defeated Montreat-Anderson 64-54 in an away match, thus earning Brevard its 17th seasonal win. Again forward Jeff Jones led the men in scoring with 28 points. Brevard and M-A engaged in a tug-of-war battle over the lead during the first half, but it was the Tornados which managed to pull out in front at the half, 31-30, Lester poured it on during the second half by adding 10 for the Tornados, which were never to trail in the lead with M-A for the remainder of the game. Larry Gaines and Ricky Traylor each shot for 7, while Nelon and Whis nant each added 2. Anderson’s Mike Peek topped the Cavaliers with 18 points. The Cavaliers shot for 47 percent, trailing Brevard’s solid 60 per cent. Tonight the Tornados face USC-Lancaster here in a con ference match wrapping up the regular season. Next Wednesday begins the WCJC Tournament at Lees-McRae. As of press-time, the Tornados are 2-6, 17-6. Harriers Qualify for Nationals Five Tornado Harriers qualified Saturday for the NJCAA National Indoor Cham pionships in March with perfor mances at the Montgomery In vitational Indoor Track Meet in Alabama. Andy Latimer finished second in the triple jump and qualified for the nationals with a jump of 50’, V4”, and also qualified for the high jump with a 6’, 7” effort. In the seeded two-mile run, Jim Hickey finished fifth and qualified with a time of 9:06, while in the unseeded two-miler, Gordon Snaden and Eric Day T)R\\^£ J_n/ OPEA/ WI6HU'/ For qualified by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Snaden finished with a time of 9:13.8 and Day finished with 9:18. Snaden, along with Marty Humphrey, also qualified for the national meet in the unseeded three-mile run, finishing 14:28.6 and 14:33.5, respectively. On January 28, Brevard Col lege travelled to the Mason Dixon Games in Louisville, Kentucky. The team, composed of sophomores Eric Day 1:59.2, Julius Korir 1:58.5, Jim Hickey 2:00.6, and Sam Obwocha 1:54.3, qualified in the 2-Mile Relay with a time of 7:52.6, placing third overall. In addition to qualifying, the team also set a new school record. The distance medley team, composed of Sam Obwocha Cardinal Drive-In OWN LETICS 7 E. ^ain Si., ttrerard 3:06.2 for the 1320, Andy Latimer 51.5 for the 440, Eric Day 2:01.7 for the 880, and Jim Hickey 4:20.9 also qualified for the indoor na tionals running 10:20.3; this medley finished fourth overall. Sophomore Willie Holeman finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22’93/4”. Mike Farmer and Marty Hum phrey both had personal bests in their events with Mike jumping 13’0” in the vault while Marty ran 9:42 in the 2-mile. Other Brevard participants were Bernard Strong 46’0” in the shot-put, and Gorden Snaden 9:48 in the 2-mile. The two Kenyan runners, Ob wocha and Julius Korir, are both progressing well after their in juries and illnesses as well as Willie Holeman recuperating from knee surgury, according to Coach Witek.
