By Greg Smart
The Brevard men’s tennis
team, under the leadership of
Coach Jimmie Whitesides, and
through hard work and practice,
has come to the midway point in
its season with many com

With three wins and five losses,
BC has beaten Montreat-

favorable showings against na
tionally ranked Anderson Col
lege.
Matt Wilson has had several
strong showings against top-
caliber players while playing at
the number-one position.
Scott Alexander, Pat Sulhvan,
and Johnny Dowdle have ,also
turned in competitive perfor

All three of the doubles teams

Soccer Recruiting
Now Underway
By Billy Sayres
For those of you who haven’t
experienced sports since your
younger days, Intramural sports
at BC is a way to get back that
peak performance level you once
had. And as many Brevard Col
lege students know, some of these
“soft” sports get pretty physical.
Not that that’s bad because we
all need to get that frustration
out. And what better wayt than on
a basketball court or football
field?
This year sophomores Kimo
Anderson and Abby Hoag handl
ed all the management for in
tramurals. According to many
participants, Kimo and Abby did
a good job setting up games and
many other little things that we
take for granted.
How’s the turn-out been? “It
was a good turn-out, but more
girls could have participated,”
said Abby.
While the sports looked rough
this year, Kimo said that “last
year things were a lot worse.”
Added Kimo, “There’s really no
need for flag-football.”
By Phil Monte
Coach Don Scarborough held a
recruiting session April 16 in an
attempt to round up next year’s
soccer hopefuls to improve upon
this past season’s record.
Coming off a 15-6-1 record and
winning the Southeastern District
Championship will be a tough act
to follow for next year’s team.
The first recruiting session
took place April 2, with a first
place Florida high school team
coming up to visit Brevard. Of
that group, three returned for the
second session tryouts.
Along with these players was a
group of 40 excellent prospects^
all of whom were referrals from a
number of ACC schools and
others.
One full scholarship of $4990
will be divided into ten separate
scholarships to be awarded to
outstanding recruits.
Some of next year’s top pro
spects include Pat Cushing, All
state Florida, Paul Dzierski, one
of the top Goalkeepers in the
South, and Steve Nickelden, an
All-American player from
Missouri.
According to Scarborough,
these players will be key addi
tions to the nine returning
players from this past season’s
squad,
John Slaton, David Mobley,
and Jon Loftin will not be return
ing.
Although the outlook looks
hopeful for next year’s squad,
Scarborough warns about being
over confident: “Last year we
has only two returning starters
and people thought we’d be horri
ble. This year the fans think we’ll
be great. Only time will tell.”
Four Are Qualified
For Outdoor Nationals
By Jeff Shore
Thus far only four people have
qualified for the outdoor national
on May 19-21 in San Angelo.
Texas.
Efforts to qualify more in
dividuals have been hindered by
poor weather. Since early March
cold temperatures have kept
meet results below par for the
Tornado runners.
Even though the team was a
day late in arriving at the Florida
Relays, several outstanding per
formances were turned in, par
ticularly in the mile and
steeplechase. Sam Obwocha
entered in the Invitationi 1
Sunkist Mile and ran 4:03.8 to
take third place. Also qualifying
for nationals were Jim Hickey
and Eric Day who place fourth
and fifth in the 3000M
Steeplechase with times of 9:17 >
and 9:22.8, respectively.
Mike Peveto ran a persona
best despite having only
minutes to warm up after riding
for ten hours.

Andy Latimer appears
set to

year as he sailed a persona
