Page 4 The Clarion Tuesday, November 15. Soccer Team Competes In Region X Championship By Clare Drake The Region X soccer cham pionships were held at Brevard College on November 4th and 5th. The teams competing in the tour naments were Anderson College, Brevard College, Montreat- Anderson College, and Spartan burg Methodist College. In the first game, Brevard defeated Anderson 3-1 in overtime. The three goals were scored by J.D. Dye assisted by Greg Smart, Scott Passarella assisted by Dan ny Kristmann, and Stewart Shipley assisted by J. D. Dye and David Coleman. Brevard came out on top against Spartanburg Methodist in the championship game. Again the score was 3-1 in overtime. This time the goals were scored by Danny Kristmann assisted by Jeff Trost, Scott Passarella with the team assisting, and Eddie Tadlock assisted by Scott Passarella. On the whole, the season was good. The freshmen gained ex perience, and the problems fac ed in the beginning were resolv ed. The team finished the regular season with a record of 13-6, which enabled them to clinch the conference and advance to the Region X Championships. At the presstime the team was competing at the Eastern Regional Championships in Deland, Florida. Teams Prepare For Season By Wanda Raines The Brevard College basket ball teams are preparing for another season. The men’s season began this past weekend and the women’s season is to begin with a tip-off tournament here next weekend. Coach Doug Rogers, the men’s coach, says that the major con cern at this point is the team’s in experience with nine new Andre James, Sparta, GA; Dwayne Jones, Willingboro, NJ; Danny McArthur, Goldsboro, NC; Jackie Penley, Weaverville, NC; Mike Segar, Franklin, NC; Tracy Stringer, Englewood, NC; Richie White, Concord, NC and John Wilson, Cary, NC. Coach Mary Ann Sunbury is very optimistic about the upcom ing season. She says that this team has a lot of depth, and the players, eight of whom are most talented since she has been freshmen. Coach Rogers hopes that the team will gain experience during the first month of the season before the conference games begin in January. Coach Rogers says that the conference games are important and the team needs to win all of them. Coach Rogers says a successful year depends on many factors in cluding how the team developes and how they work together. He says that the team is working hard and that they are capable of a successful year. They are work ing hard to maintain a winning tradition. Coacly Rogers is “cautiously optimistic” about the upcoming season. Besides the team inex perience, it also faces a tough schedule that includes Louisburg, Lees McRae, and Ferrum, VA. The 1983 Brevard Men’s Basketball team consists of cap tains Rick Traylor, Rosman, N.C.; Larry Gaines, Willingboro, NJ; and Jeff Jones, Winston- Salem, NC. Other members of the team are Theodus Baker, Quincy, at Brevard. The team this year consists of eight freshmen and two sophomores. The two returning sophomores Kathy Marlowe and Cheryl Vickers have “provided all the leadership the freshmen have needed.” Coach Sunbury also says that this is the tallest team we have ever had at Brevard with two players over six feet tall. The addition of the taller players will improve the team rebounding immensely. Coach Sunbury says that if the team stays healthy, they should have “one of the best records a women’s team has ever had here (at Brevard), if they keep developing as a team.” Coach Sunbury said, “this is the best team attitude wise, that I have ever coached.” She said that all of the team is dedicated to basketball and really want to do well. Coach Sunbury says that the season consists of many tough games including Peace and Anderson Colleges. Volleyball Team Progresses To Regional Meet by Wanda Raines The 1983 Brevard College Women’s Volleyball team recent ly completed a difficult season with 22 regular season games, they only had one win. This year’s team included three players who had never played volleyball, this attributed to the team’s inexperience. Coach Deanna Morrow said “I have been very pleased with their week-to-week improvement.” “Sophomores Marcy Clair and Regina McKinney were the only returning experienced players and both provided strong leader ship the entire season,” Coach Morrow said. At press time, the team was at the Regional Tournament. Main St., Brevard 883-21251 Fifth Ranked Roadrunners Head For Nationals By Susan Rogers For the sixth straight year, the Brevard College cross country team has gone undefeated. On October 22, the Roadrun ners won their third invitational meet with a total of 18 points at UNC-Charlotte. Wake Forest’s “B” team was second with 73 points followed by host school UNC-Charlotte with 84 points, Ten schools competed in the in vitational. Alphonce Swai covered the 5.2 [mile course in a record setting time of 24:21. The old record was held by Frank Ivey of Davidson at 25:30. Gordon Snaden and Marty I Humphrey finished together in second and third positions with a time of 25:16. In fifth position was Charlie Purser with a time of 25:34 followed by Allen Ford in seventh position with a time of 25:53. Glenn Roach, tenth, Chris Campbell, eleventh, and Liam Hennessey, twelfth, all finished within thirteen seconds of each other. David Czajka finished twentieth with a time of 27:14. On October 29, the Roadrun ners finished their season by defeating the University of Ten nessee JV’s by a score of 17 to 38. The dual meet produced five of the top seven fastest times on the Brevard College course, established in 1974. , Alphonce Swai remained ‘undefeated by winning his eight straight race with a time of 24:26. Gordon Snaden, second at 24:41, and Marty Humphrey, third at 24:48, became the only two collegiates other than Swai to break 25:00 on the 5-mile course. Allen Ford placed fifth with a time of 25:19 and Charlie Purser place sixth with a time of 25:46. These times gave Brevard the fastest top five of any other Brevard College team. After eight meets, Brevard found its sixth and seventh men for Nationals in Glenn Roach, who placed tenth against Ten nessee, and Liam Hennessy, who placed eleventh. Brevard is currently ranked fifth in national standings.
