Teams Prepare For Season
By Wanda Raines
The Brevard College basket
ball teams are preparing for
another season. The men’s
season began this past weekend
and the women’s season is to
begin with a tip-off tournament
here next weekend.
Coach Doug Rogers, the men’s
coach, says that the major con
cern at this point is the team’s in
experience with nine new

NC; Mike Segar, Franklin, NC;
Tracy Stringer, Englewood, NC;
Richie White, Concord, NC and
John Wilson, Cary, NC.
Coach Mary Ann Sunbury is
very optimistic about the upcom
ing season. She says that this
team has a lot of depth, and the
players, eight of whom are most talented since she has been
freshmen.
Coach Rogers hopes that the
team will gain experience during
the first month of the season
before the conference games
begin in January. Coach Rogers
says that the conference games
are important and the team
needs to win all of them.
Coach Rogers says a successful
year depends on many factors in
cluding how the team developes
and how they work together. He
says that the team is working
hard and that they are capable of
a successful year. They are work
ing hard to maintain a winning
tradition.
Coacly Rogers is “cautiously
optimistic” about the upcoming
season. Besides the team inex
perience, it also faces a tough
schedule that includes Louisburg,
Lees McRae, and Ferrum, VA.
The 1983 Brevard Men’s
Basketball team consists of cap
tains Rick Traylor, Rosman,
N.C.; Larry Gaines, Willingboro,
NJ; and Jeff Jones, Winston-
Salem, NC. Other members of the
team are Theodus Baker, Quincy,
at Brevard.
The team this year consists of
eight freshmen and two
sophomores. The two returning
sophomores Kathy Marlowe and
Cheryl Vickers have “provided
all the leadership the freshmen
have needed.” Coach Sunbury
also says that this is the tallest
team we have ever had at
Brevard with two players over
six feet tall. The addition of the
taller players will improve the
team rebounding immensely.
Coach Sunbury says that if the
team stays healthy, they should
have “one of the best records a
women’s team has ever had here
(at Brevard), if they keep
developing as a team.” Coach
Sunbury said, “this is the best
team attitude wise, that I have
ever coached.” She said that all
of the team is dedicated to
basketball and really want to do
well.
Coach Sunbury says that the
season consists of many tough
games including Peace and
Anderson Colleges. It also in

Volleyball Team
Progresses To
Regional Meet
by Wanda Raines
The 1983 Brevard College
Women’s Volleyball team recent
ly completed a difficult season
with 22 regular season games,
they only had one win.
This year’s team included
three players who had never
played volleyball, this attributed
to the team’s inexperience.
Coach Deanna Morrow said “I
have been very pleased with their
week-to-week improvement.”
“Sophomores Marcy Clair and
Regina McKinney were the only
returning experienced players
and both provided strong leader
ship the entire season,” Coach
Morrow said.
At press time, the team was at
the Regional Tournament.
