The Brevard College Lady Tor
nado Basketball team finished
the 1983-84 season with a 14-11
overall record. The Tornados
finished fourth in the Western
division'NJCAA tournament with
a 79-60 win over Lees-McRae and
a close 83-78 loss to top-seeded
Spartanburg Methodist College.
In the first game of the tourna
ment against Lees-McRae, Sheila
Gibson led the way with 20 points.
Every Lady Tornado scored as
Angie Vickers had 16 points and
Julie Fairbank and Ivet Concep
cion contributed nine points each.
Brevard took the lead with 15:32
to go in the first half and never
looked back. Lees-McRae’s high
scorer was Betsy Garris with 16.
The second round of the tourna
ment put Brevard against top-
ranked Spartanburg Methodist.
Despite being down by as much
as 15 points in the first half,
Brevard rallied to go into half-
time only 9 points down. The
strong second half surge closed
the gap to 3 points but the Tor
nados never could get any
closer. Time ran out as the Spar
tanburg Pioneers took the game
83-78, which meant the end of the
season tor Brevard. Julie Fair
bank had 18 points and 15 re
bounds while Kathy Marlowe and
Sheila Gibson had 20 and 16 points
respectively.
Tina Banks
Brevard’s
First Woman
All-American

Tina Banks has become the
first woman All-American from
Brevard College, placing fourth
in the 55-meter hurdles at the Na
tional Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) Indoor Na
tional Meet.
The meet was held in Fayet
teville, Arkansas on March 2-3.
Semi-finals were held the first
day with 12 qualifiers in Banks’
category. The six girls with the
fastest times progressed to the
finals. Banks was third in her
h»at with a time of 8.58 seconds.
She placed fourth in the finals
with a time of 8.55 seconds.
Banks qualified for the Na
tionals at the Eastman Invitii-
tional with a time of 8.77 seconds.
Banks set state records in the
100-meter and 300-meter hurdles
during her senior year at Bristol
Tennessee High School. In addi
tion, she was the statewide cham
pion for AAA schools.
When asked how she felt about
her performance, Tina replied,
"Coach German told me all along
that I could be the first woman
All-American from BC. That was
on my mind at the meet, but my
main goal was to try to win the
national championship. I can’t
complain though, fourth place
isn’t bad.”
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Banks of Bristol,
Tennessee.
Tornados Compete
In Tournament
Ferrum College beat the BC
Tornados 106-99 after two over
times in the NJCAA Region X
Tournament in Murfreesboro on
March 7.
The lead changed hands many
times throughout the first half,
which ended with the Tornados
ahead 49-47. With both teams
playing well in the second half,
regulation time ended with the
score deadlocked 92-92. Each
team managed six points in the
first overtime period which end
ed 98-98.
The Tornados only gained one
point in the second overtime,
while Ferrum tossed in eight
points to win the game and con
tinue in the tournament.
Jeff Jones was high scorer for
the Tornados with 22 points.
Larrv Gaines followed with 20,
and Theodus Baker and Ricky
Traylor each had 17 pomts.
Danny Kristmann Named
Soccer All-American
Danny Kristmann was named
to the National Junior College
Athletic Association All-
American second team, as well
as the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America’s All-
American squad. Kristmann was
named NJCAA Region 10 Player
of The Year and Western
Carolina College Conference
Player of The Year. During the
1983 season, Kristmann scored 16
goals and assisted on 5 others. He
helped lead Brevard to a 15-7
record and a No. 15 national rank-

Ladies Defeat Salem
The First Annual Brevard Col
lege Awesome Triathlon has been
set for Saturday, April 26, on the
Brevard College campus. The
triathlon includes a two-mile run,
a six-mile bike ride, and a half-
mile swim. Prizes will be award
ed in different categories and
classes.
John Delaney, who is in charge
of the contest, says he hopes that
it will become an annual event.
He added that initial response is
encouraging. Those interested
are asked to contact Mr.
Delaney.

After two matches, the BC
women’s tennis team record is
split 1-1.
On March 7, the Lady Tornados
took on Converse College. They
lost all singles and doubles
games, a 9-0 victory for Con
verse. According to coach Deana
Morrow, “Converse is probably
the toughest match \re’ll have all
season.”
Things improved when BC won
their next match against Salem
College. Tracey McCarthy, Mary
Kieffer, Joanie Watters, Megan
Johnson, and Kristin Iberger all
won their respective matches and
the doubles team of Mary Kieffer
and Megan Johnson also came
out on top. The final score was
6-3, giving the Lady Tornados
their first win of the season.
