No other junior college team in the nation has ever accomplished this before. The Brevard team looks very Rinker New Track Coach David Rinker will take over as the new Women’s Head Track and Cross Country Coach. Rinker, a graduate of James Madison University, brings a wealth of experience to the women’s programs. During his 7 years at Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, VA, Rinker won five District Cross Country Championships and six Outdoor and Indoor Track Champion ships. In addition, his teams have won five state titles, two in Cross Country and three in the Outdoor Track Championships. Though the team will be young and inexperienced, Rinker is looking forward to the challenge of producing a winning women’s program. Patti Jones, the only Lady Runners By Robin Thomas The Brevard College girls’ cross-country team opens the season with ttieir first meet September 30 at the Greenville Roadrace in Greenville, S.C. Coach Dave Rinker feels that this “first full team” ever should do well. The team has been at strong this year with the addi tions of seventeen freshmen, two transfers from ex-rival Clackamus Junior College in Oregon, and a foreign student from Denmark. No single in dividual is leading the pack for the Brevard team yet. In the Apple Festival Road Race, held August 25, Patrick O’Grady from Ireland, Henning Brandt from Denmark, and Charlie Purser all took first place honors with a very respectible time of 50:07.6. Fellow team mates Winston Brown and Rodney Curry followed closely with a time of 50:36 in a fourth place tie. Coach Norm Witek is not wor ried about the loss of Alphonce Swai. “The top five run together,” he explained, adding that this is an advantage the team did not have last year. The team will also temporarily miss two top runners due to in juries. Gordon Snaden, who finished third in the nationals last year, was hit by a car near the end of the summer. In addition. Allen Ford, who finished thirtjl eighth, has a femur splint. f What are Brevard’s chances 0 winning another national title' “Our shot is as good al anybody’s,” says Coach Witek,i He further explained, “Injurie and luck play an important ro^ but we do have qualified peoplel win another title.” Soccer Conference Season Begins David Rinker sophomore, along with freshmen Patti Sinclair, Becky Shore, Phillis Kelleher, Ellen Forbes, and Kelly Ayers will make up the nucleus of this year’s team. Rinker will also assist Coach Norm Witek in the men’s track and cross country programs. Currently, Brevard College has two of Rinker’s athletes enroll ed, sophomore Jeff Jenrette, a 6’8” high jumper, and Charles Hinkle, a 20th place finisher in the State Cross Country Cham pionships. Attend Meet practice for three weeks. Mr. Rinker added, “We’re basically an organization trying to get peo ple in shape and enjoy some exer cise.” The team consists of freshmen Becky Shore, Dee Lindsey, and Ellen Forbes, and sophomore Patty Jones. By Eddie Tadlock The Brevard College Soccer Team is in the final stages of preparing for its 1984 season debut. The defending NJCAA Region X Champions look for ward to another winning season and are favored in national polls to finish first in Region X com petition. With only two weeks to prepare for its opening conference match, the Tornados have their work cut out for themselves. The team will have to rely on the experience of its ten returning players to get the ball rolling. The returning players are; Don Collier, David Coleman, Leo Col eman, John Coness, John Folckener, Jim Gray, Mike Nissely, Scott Passarella, Pat Truluck, and Eddie Tadlock. With an arsenal of seasoned players returning, Brevard College promises to be an the upcomii soccer seasi exciting one.
