Rev. James McLarty Honored

Dr. Jacob C. Martinson, Jr.
president of Brevard College, has
announced a resolution in honor
of the late Reverend James B.
McLarty.
McLarty, who resided in Black
Mountain, was the last surviving
member of the first Brevard Col
lege Board of Trustees, and was
the only member with the status
of Trustee for life. He was the
secretary of the Board ot
Trustees for several years.
McLarty was a Methodist
minister and served as consul
tant for the General Conference
Commission on Worship of the
Western North Carolina Con
ference of the United Methodist
Church. McLarty served as a
Chaplin in the U.S. Navy during
World War IL Reverend McLar
ty passed away in June of 1984
and is survived by his wife,
Margaret Glenn McLarty and
three children.
This resolution, published by
the wishes of Johnie H. Jones,
Chairman of the Brevard College
Rev. James B. McLarty has been honored by the Board
of Trustees at Brevard College.

follows:
WHEREAS we mourn the pass
ing of Mr. James B. McLarty who
faithfully and tirelessly served
Brevard College as a charter
member of the Board of Trustees
since 1934 and as secretary of the
corporation; and
WHEREAS under his excellent
leadership as a member of the
Board of Trustees of the college
across the years, the college has
become one of the finest educa
tional centers in Western North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS Jim McLarty’s vir
tue as a Christian and his honor
as a man loom high in our
memories; and
WHEREAS Jim McLarty sent
us all out to make goodness at
tractive and make righteousness
lovable because of what he was;

WHEREAS we can all know
with assurance that James B.
McLarty now rests on “higher
ground”;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, that the Board of
Trustees of Brevard College give
thanks to God for James B. Mc
Larty’s extraordinary service
and express its appreciation for
his valuable contributions to his
church, his family, his communi
ty, and the educational integrity
of Brevard College, and further
express to his family the deep
loss we feel as we stand once
more upon the shore of the sea
and bid farewell to one of our
departed brothers.
Financial Aid Program Announced

Brevard College Financial Aid
Director, Edwin K. Cunningham
has announced the financial aid
program for the 1985-86 school
year.
Mr. Cunningham stated that
scholarships would make up a
portion of the financial aid.
Scholarships available to
Brevard College students are as
follows: Angier B. Duke scholar
ships, the Annabel Lambuth
Jones scholarship, Allen H. Sims
scholarships, C.Grier and Lena
Sue Beam scholarships, Brevard
College Endowed scholarships,
citizenship, talent, and athletic
scholarships, the Western N.C.
Methodist scholarship, and North
Carolina Contractual scholar

Mr. Cunningham stated that
funds from private sources to the
Brevard College scholarship pool
have created an increase in
Brevard’s financial aid program.

Tomorrow Night
Barbara Bailey Hutchison, an
accomplished musician and
singer-songwriter will be the first
major coffeehouse performer of
the semester, appearing tomor
row night at 9:00 in the Student
Union.
Touring continuously for over
four years, Barbara has perform
ed in numerous clubs and col
leges throughout the country.
She has shared the stage with the
likes of Kenny Rankin, Steve
Goodman, Maria Muldaur, Josh
White, Jr., Loudon Wainwright
III, Asleep At The Wheel, and
many others. She has also been
invited to perform on various
radio and television programs in
cluding P.M. Magazine.
Although Hutchison sings
many ballads, she proves to be
quite a rocker, too. Her sound is
often reminiscent of the folk-rock
era. Some of her repertoire from
other artists include “Edge of
Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks, “In
My Life” by John Lennon and
Paul McCartney, “Leader of the
Band” by Dan Fogelberg, “Sweet
Baby James” by James Taylor,
and “Pinball Wizard” by The
Who.

Chiaroscuro Winners
“The important thing which we
have to understand is that the
purpose of financial aid is two
fold. One, it is to provide access
to higher education. Two, it is to
provide a student with a choice as
to where to get that education,
stated Cunningham.

The Chiaroscuro, the campus
art and literature magazine, is
pleased to announce the winners
of its 1984-85 contest. Over thirty
BC student artists and writers
submitted some fifty pieces to be
judged. “The winning selections,
along with other submissions,
will be featured when the
Chiaroscuro is published later
this semester,” said Ken
Chamlee, Chiaroscuro advisor
The winners are; In poetry.
First Place, Robert Boren, “The
Primal World;” Second Place,
Robert Boren, “The Hit of the
Middle Age;” Honorable Men
tion, Stephen Wells,
“Simplicity.” In prose, Pirst
Place, David Friedman, “Say
Goodbye to Amy;” Second Place,
Rod Graves, “Trouting;”
Honorable Mention, Mike Shell,
“Peace.”
Entries were submitted in only
one art category—photo-
graphy/drawing/printmaking.
The winners are; First Place,
Richard Ledbetter, a mixed
media collage; Second Place,
Eric Janulet, an etching; and
Third Place, Cooper Christian, a
hand colored photo.
Judges for this year’s contest
were Dr. Mary Ihrig Withers,
Professor of English at Kansas
Newman College, Wichita, Kan
sas, and Brigid Burns of Iris
